Supercars sophomore claims maiden win, Kostecki shows fight
Australia's premier motorsport championship made a well-behaved start to the Perth Super 440 at Carco.com.au Raceway in Wanneroo, with not a single flag flown or safety car deployed.
Wood barely put a foot wrong after starting second on the grid, capturing the lead 10 laps in before fending off a roaring finish from reigning champion Will Brown in the final five laps to salute in front of the West Australian faithful.
Kostecki fell two places from his third-place start but showed major improvements after only managing 18th fastest in practice on Friday, a huge boost to his hopes across the weekend.
Wood made the most of the outside line off the starting grid but was outmaneuvered into the first turn as pole-sitter Chaz Mostert held onto the lead.
Kostecki left too much room for championship leader Broc Feeney on the inside to slip out of the podium places off the line.
It forced the Perth boy to settle in behind him, and he steadily lost time in the dirty air while also fending off Will Brown and Matt Payne as they battled behind him.
Mostert's lead evaporated on lap ten of 50, Wood side-by-side with him on the inside through turn seven before making the most of a better exit to capture the lead through turn one.
Feeney was the first to pull the trigger on a pit stop, taking two new tyres in an impressive 3.6-second change on lap 22 and forcing Wood to react.
The move worked perfectly for Feeney, Wood's rear tyres forcing a slow stop to leave the young gun on the race leader's bumper after his rejoin.
The call to leave Mostert out past the halfway mark cost the Mobil1 driver; a slow pit stop dumping him out behind Kostecki in fifth.
However, it was the best possible result for the fans as Mostert and the hometown hero renewed hostilities, going bumper-to-bumper and crisscrossing into and out of turns seven and one.
In the end, Mostert's new set of tyres made the difference, Kostecki unable to win his spot back a second time.
Red Bull teammates Feeney and Will Brown rubbed shoulders as the race reached the pointy end.
And the reigning champion was given the green light to race Feeney, grabbing second with 12 laps to go before making a run at Wood that came up narrowly short.

Emerging Australian stars rewarded with US Open starts
Emerging talents Tristan Schoolkate and Talia Gibson have been rewarded for breakout years with wildcards into the main draw of the US Open, bringing the Australian tally to 14. The final major of the year gets underway on Sunday, August 24 (local time), with qualifying starting next Monday. But the young guns can skip that phase after getting direct entry into the New York City tournament, with world No.8 Alex de Minaur leading the Australian charge. West Australian Schoolkate broke into the ATP top 100 for the first time last week following a string of strong results, including a stand-out victory over world No.47 Joao Fonseca at the Toronto Masters - his first win over a top-50 opponent. Now ranked 97, the 24-year-old just missed direct entry, ranked No.110 at the July 14 entry deadline. Reaching the second round of the 2024 US Open, Schoolkate also made three Challenger finals this season, claiming titles in Brisbane and Ilkley, UK. "It's such an amazing experience to play in the main draws of the grand slams - it's what we as players work towards, week in, week out so I'm excited and ready for the challenge in New York," Schoolkate said. Gibson, 21, has also enjoyed a breakthrough year, peaking at world No.107 last month. Also from WA, Gibson recently captured her 10th ITF singles title at the W75 event in Granby, Canada. After securing her first grand slam main-draw win at the Australian Open, coming from a set down in a memorable debut at Melbourne Park, Gibson made her maiden Wimbledon main-draw appearance this year achieved by winning three rounds of qualifying. "This is an incredibly rewarding acknowledgement for all the hard work my team and I have been putting in and for the results I've had this year," Gibson said of the Tennis Australia wildcard. "I can't wait to get out there and give it my very best and make everyone proud." Schoolkate and Gibson will join 12 other Australians - eight men and four women - in the main draw. A further seven men and nine women will represent Australia in qualifying.

Super Netball 2025: West Coast Fever re-sign English captain Fran Williams as strong squad retention continues
England captain Fran Williams says she's thankful to 'be a part of the world-class environment' at West Coast Fever after re-signing with the Super Netball powerhouse for the 2026 season. Williams, 27, is the latest Fever star to extend her stay at the club, joining superstar shooter Jhaniele Fowler-Nembhard who this week also put pen to paper on a new deal. It means the defender will play in the green dress for a third season, having already played 32 games for Fever since she joined the WA side ahead of 2024. The West Australian understands Fever will lock away their final contracted 10 in the coming days, with fellow defenders Kadie-Ann Dehaney and Ruth Aryang both set to re-sign with the grand final side. It means Fever will head into next year with only one change to their main list, with 2022 grand final hero Sasha Glasgow returning to the club earlier this week to replace Jamaican goal attack Shanice Beckford, who was not offered a new deal. Midcourter Zoe Cransberg — who played in the decider as a replacement for the injured Aryang — is the only Fever player without a deal for next season, but Super Netball clubs cannot sign their '11th player' until after the free agency window closes on August 23. Williams' decision to stay comes after speculation the Roses star could be on the move as she looks for more court time leading into next year's Commonwealth Games and the 2027 World Cup in Sydney. She forms part of a strong defence that includes Dehaney as well as Diamonds star Sunday Aryang who is also locked away for next year. 'I am really excited to be re-signing with Fever for my third season,' Williams said. 'After one of the toughest losses I've faced in the 2025 SSN grand final, my motivation to continue to strive for more with this club couldn't be higher. 'I feel very grateful to be a part of the world-class environment here at Fever as well as have such good support from my amazing teammates and of course the incredible Green Army.' Fever coach Dan Ryan said Williams was a 'fierce competitor and a highly respected member of our team and club'. 'She's been such an impactful contributor on and off the court the past two seasons, so we are thrilled to have her in green for a third season,' Ryan said. 'Fran is as hard working and dedicated as they come and has really challenged herself this year to grow her game inside and outside of the circle. She's now a genuine triple threat for us in all three positions and whatever role the team needs from her, she embraces it wholeheartedly and delivers. 'She's an astute and unique operator and sets an incredibly high standard of excellence in our environment and I'm excited to see what she brings to the court for us in 2026.'
