Intense showers lash Latur dist, alert for villages on river banks
Rivers and streams across the district are now brimming to capacity, signalling a premature onset of monsoon-like weather in May.
The district recorded 157mm of rainfall between May 5 and May 23. This unprecedented showers, coupled with lightning and stormy winds, has led to considerable damage and tragic losses. In the past two weeks, 95 livestock have been reported dead, and there have been three human casualties.
The farming community too has suffered substantial losses.
Latur district collector Varsha Thakur-Ghuge said, "We are witnessing unprecedented pre-monsoon rainfall with thunder and gusty winds for this time of year, which is due to the low-pressure area developed in the Arabian Sea. The administration is taking all necessary measures to mitigate its impact." She added that teams are on high alert and contingency plans are in place for timely evacuation and relief operations if required.
She also appealed to the citizens, especially those residing in low-lying and riverside villages, to cooperate with local authorities and prioritize their safety.
The incessant rainfall has led to swelling of Manjara river, its tributary Rena, and Terna and Tawarja rivers. This prompted the authorities to issue alerts to villages located along their banks. The district disaster management department was put on high alert as further rainfall could lead to a full-blown flood situation.
To tackle potential emergencies, six search and rescue teams were deployed, with an additional team stationed at Renapur.
Each team comprised 10 personnel equipped with boats, 150 life jackets, 150 life rings, rescue ropes, stretchers, lighting, floating equipment, and other essential gear.
"The district administration is fully prepared to tackle any emergency arising from the ongoing unseasonal rains. We are continuously monitoring water levels and have deployed search and rescue teams in vulnerable areas," Latur's district disaster management officer Dr. Saqueb Osmani said.

BMC conducts patchwork repairs on battered stretches in Salt Lake
1 2 Kolkata: Cashing in on the dry spell, BMC has started conducting patchwork on the damaged road stretches in Salt Lake, which were battered due to the recent heavy rain. On Monday, civic authorities conducted patchwork on the stretch connecting Purta Bhavan to the CGO Complex crossing. "Repair work will be conducted on all damaged roads before Durga Puja ," said an official. Large craters and potholes have developed on several stretches of the avenue and crossroads in Salt Lake. Many of the stretches were repaired earlier this year. Not only the main thoroughfares, but the condition of roads inside some of the blocks is also in a dismal state, with no repairs taken up for years. Civic officials said they will also talk to the contractors about why road surfaces are getting damaged within a few months of being repaired. "There are three to four years of agreements with the contractors who are engaged for road repairs. They will be asked to do the needful," said an official. IMD issues heavy rainfall warning for 15 dists
Bhubaneswar: Heavy rainfall is likely to occur in several districts under the influence of a well-marked low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, which is likely to turn into a depression on Tuesday, IMD said on Monday. A red warning for heavy to very heavy rain was issued for Koraput, Nabarangpur and Malkangiri districts with isolated places likely to get extremely heavy rainfall along with thunderstorm and lightning, accompanied by gusty surface wind speeds reaching 30-40kmph. An orange warning was issued for Kalahandi, Rayagada, Gajapati and Kandhamal districts. Heavy to very heavy rainfall and thunderstorm with lightning, with gusty surface wind speeds reaching 30-40 kmph, are very likely to occur at one or two places over these districts. A yellow warning of heavy rain has been also issued for Ganjam, Nayagarh, Boudh, Balangir, Nuapada, Puri, Khurda and Cuttack districts. The low-pressure area was located over west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal and north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts at 8:30am on Monday. It is likely to move west-northwestwards, concentrate into a depression, and cross the south Odisha-north Andhra Pradesh coasts before noon on Tuesday. Under the influence of the depression, strong winds may damage plantations, horticulture and standing crops. "Minor damage may occur to loose/unsecured structures. Partial damage may occur to vulnerable structures due to strong winds," the IMD bulletin said. The highest rainfall of 130mm was recorded at Kotpad in Koraput district on Tuesday, followed by Malkangiri's 110mm. Several other places in south Odisha received more than 50mm of rainfall during the last 24 hours. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the deep sea until Aug 20. "People may be advised to keep watch on the weather and take safe shelter during the thunderstorm activity to protect from lightning," read the advisory from the special relief commissioner (SRC).
