Jiohotstar closes in on Netflix, subscribers touch 300 million

Time of India6 hours ago

Jiohotstar's overall subscriber base has touched 300 million, just shy of the global OTT giant Netflix's last reported number of 301.63 million, the domestic streaming platform said on Wednesday.
Recently concluded edition of the Tata IPL seemed to be aiding in the subscriber addition, which had stood at just 50 million in February as per a media report.
The BCCI-promoted cricket league had many firsts in 2025, including digital viewership at 652 million crossing the 537 million on television, as per a report published by its parent Jiostar, which came into being in February this year with the merger of Reliance-led Jiocinema and Disney+Hotstar.
Sanjog Gupta, the chief executive for sports and live experiences for Jiostar, suggested that the high viewership also translated into revenues.
"We have managed to make this IPL the most monetised edition of the event and also the most monetised sporting event ever in India across advertising and subscription revenue," he said.
It can be noted that in 2022, Disney Star had won the TV rights of the tournament by offering Rs 23,575 crore for five years, while the India digital rights was bagged by Reliance-backed Viacom18 for Rs 20,500 crore.
There was a 5.16 per cent jump among those who watched the cricket league in the digital format -- then known as Jiocinema -- from 620 million last year. However, the growth was restricted by a marginal 1.6 per cent dip in the TV watchers from the year-ago edition's 546 million who watched it on Star Sports.
The final fixture between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Punjab Kings on June 3 won by the Virat Kohli-led team from the southern city, had a reach of 237 million on digital, and 189 million on television, Jiostar said in a report.
It can be noted that in February, Jiostar had just 50 million subscribers which raced to 280 million by May with start of the cricketing league, as per a media report.
Netflix had 301.6 subscribers across 190 countries as of end-December 2024, with over 18 million added in October-December 2024.
The overall reach of IPL across digital and TV mediums for Jiostar stood at 1.19 billion, and the average daily reach touched 121 million on TV and 170 million on digital platforms, the report said.
The report said 129 million of the TV viewers were on the higher-cost Star Sports HD, and added that 47 per cent of the overall viewers on Star Sports were women.
On the digital front, the reach on the streaming platform Jiohotstar stood at 652 million, while the same on connected TV was 235 million and 417 million watched it on mobile phones.
The company's report said Jiostar had 1.04 billion downloads on Android, as per the report.
The peak concurrency, which is the maximum number of users watching simultaneously, touched 55.2 million on the digital platforms, it said.
The overall watch time on television had stood at 514 billion minutes, the report said.
Among the languages, Telugu IPL viewers grew the fastest when compared to the last year's edition with an 87 per cent jump, and were followed by Kannada at 65 per cent, and Tamil at 52 per cent.
The growth in the Hindi audience stood at 31 per cent, making it the slowest growing among the top-five language feeds.
The company reported that it had 425 advertisers from 40 unique categories, it said, adding that the advertisers included 270 debutants.
RCB had the highest video viewership at over 330 million, and Mumbai Indians edged past the league winners in overall TV watch time per team at 106 million billion minutes, as per the Jiostar report.

Haffkine to quiz 2 pharmaceutical firms for selling it ‘blacklisted' medicines for government hospitals in Maharashtra

Mumbai: Haffkine Bio-Pharmaceuticals procurement cell will be seeking explanations from two pharmaceutical firms after it came to light that medicines ordered for govt hospitals across the state in Feb had been declared "not of standard quality" and blacklisted by Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) just two months earlier. In Dec, ESIC issued a circular blacklisting specific drugs from seven pharmaceutical companies, citing test results that found these medicines to be of substandard quality and directing that no further orders be placed with them. However, Haffkine Bio-Pharmaceuticals placed large supply orders with two of the listed firms. This resulted in the procurement of nearly 21.9 lakh vials of Pantoprazole 40mg/10ml injection worth Rs 2.5 crore from Galpha Laboratories Ltd, and 88,650 tablets of Vildagliptin 50mg, along with Metformin Hydrochloride 1000mg worth nearly Rs 12.6 lakh, from Bajaj Healthcare Ltd. Pantoprazole is used to treat acid-related stomach issues such as ulcers and acid reflux, while Vildagliptin with Metformin is prescribed to manage type 2 diabetes by controlling blood sugar levels. Although Haffkine is no longer the primary authority for medicine procurement, it was granted permission to utilise the remaining Rs 131.6 crore to restock medicines at state-run hospitals through a Govt Resolution (GR). by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Memperdagangkan CFD Emas dengan salah satu spread terendah? IC Markets Mendaftar "The procurement process must be based on ESIC rate contracts as received on the e-Aushadhi platform," the GR stated. "We have been orally informed by ESIC that the issue pertained to specific batches. Nevertheless, we have sought written responses from the companies as well as from ESIC. These will be submitted to higher authorities, and payments to the companies will be withheld until a reasonable explanation is provided," the official said, but did not provide the amount of payments to be withheld. Abhay Pandey, of the All Food and Drug Licence Holders Foundation, who flagged the issue with medical education department officials, alleged that the existing rate contract was arbitrarily selected by Haffkine without verifying the blacklisting status of the companies or conducting additional tests on the medicines. Haffkine officials did not respond when asked whether random sampling of the procured products was conducted in accordance with the GR. Dr Shashi Kolnoorkar, state ESIC director (Medical), said the blacklisting order came from the Delhi headquarters and that appropriate action had been taken at the time. When asked whether the blacklisting applied to specific batches or constituted a complete ban on the medicines in question, he referred the query to the ESIC head office. Attempts were made to reach Dr Neeta Garbiyal, deputy medical commissioner at the ESIC head office, who had signed the blacklist circular, but she was unavailable for comment. File pic

Gujarat emerges as second highest CSR spender in country

1 2 Ahmedabad/Vadodara: Gujarat recorded a sharp rise in corporate social responsibility (CSR) spending in FY 2024, emerging as the second highest contributor in the country after Maharashtra. According to data by the Union ministry of corporate affairs, companies operating in the state spent Rs 2,707.54 crore on CSR activities during the fiscal, registering a robust 31.4% growth over the previous year's Rs 2,060.02 crore. The number of contributing companies also rose to 3,789, indicating growing corporate participation in social development. You Can Also Check: Ahmedabad AQI | Weather in Ahmedabad | Bank Holidays in Ahmedabad | Public Holidays in Ahmedabad The rise in CSR places Gujarat ahead of traditionally strong industrial hubs like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Delhi, all of which saw more modest increases. While Maharashtra retained its lead with Rs 6,065.95 crore in CSR spend, Gujarat not only narrowed the gap but also posted the highest year-on-year percentage growth among the top five states. Pankaj Kamliya, chief operations officer, Gujarat CSR Authority (GCSRA), said, "The spending by ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India Limited has substantially grown in the past year, which is reflected in the overall spending. Moreover, the spending in Vadodara district has dramatically improved. Overall, Gujarat-based companies made good profits, which directly led to an increase in CSR spending. The state govt's proactive approach is also helping materialise CSR projects widely, with better local support, a conducive environment to execute projects, and thorough analysis of the requirement of each district and plans of action developed by the govt. " According to experts, Gujarat has seen a substantial number of large industries setting and expanding their footprint in the last decade. Many of them were profitable in recent years, with increasing volumes year after year. The strong presence of large companies in the manufacturing sector has driven the trend of increased spending. "While Karnataka has long been India's IT powerhouse, Gujarat has led in manufacturing. Today, the China Plus One strategy has positioned Gujarat as a key global supplier, driving strong corporate profits. At the same time, a slowdown in the IT sector has squeezed margins for tech firms, impacting Karnataka's economic edge," said Parthesh Vyas, co-CEO of Vadodara-based Fulcrum, a leading consulting, advising, and research firm in the social and CSR sector, which released the 'Bharat CSR Performance Report FY 2023-24' on Monday. "Moreover, while investments in IT may be tapering, Gujarat continues to attract some of the highest foreign investments—thanks to its world-class infrastructure, including excellent roads, ports, and connectivity. This combination has propelled Gujarat to the number two position in corporate profitability, ahead of Karnataka," said Vyas. Notably, CSR spending in Gujarat nearly tripled from Rs 984.37 crore in FY 2020 to Rs 2,707.54 crore in FY 2024. Companies with registered offices or significant operations in Gujarat have increasingly aligned their CSR goals with local developmental priorities, particularly in education, environment, and gender equity. Education emerged as the largest sectoral beneficiary in FY 2024, drawing Rs 1,424.47 crore in funding, up 39.3% from the previous year. Healthcare, even though drawing the second highest CSR spending, witnessed a marginal decline of 5.2% in FY 2024. "One reason could be the govt's increased focus on public health post-Covid. Flagship schemes like Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) have enabled millions to access top-tier treatment across the country, possibly reducing the immediate need for corporate intervention in the healthcare sector through CSR," said Arun Mathai Marette, co-CEO of Fulcrum. In terms of districts, Ahmedabad stood out with the highest CSR inflow at Rs 760.99 crore, accounting for over a quarter of the state's total. Vadodara, Gandhinagar, Jamnagar, and Surat also figured prominently, reflecting the concentration of corporate hubs and industrial zones in these regions.
