North Wales beaches among UK's best in The Times 2025 guide

Leader Live07-07-2025
The 2025 guide was compiled by The Times' chief travel writer, Chris Haslam, who visited 756 beaches and 51 resorts across the UK and Northern Ireland.
Introducing the list, Mr Haslam said: "[The fact] that I completed this tour of inspection under mainly blue skies made choosing the top 50 — ten of which are new entries — even harder.
"If it feels like I've moved away from easily-accessed urban shores to include more rural beaches, that's because the glitter seems tarnished in too many of our resort towns.
"I've seen businesses struggling with rising costs, councils cutting budgets and water quality falling as infrastructure has failed to keep pace with population growth.
"That's not true of all town beaches though: Bude, Frinton on Sea, Roker, Saundersfoot and Skegness made the top 50, and others including Cromer, Felixstowe, Torquay and Mumbles came close.
"The truth remains, though, that our coast is still the most beautiful and most varied on earth, and there's much to discover beyond the most obvious spots.
"So pack a picnic and the factor 50 and make 2025 the summer of the beach that's a little harder to reach."

The beaches in Wales ranked among the best in the UK, according to The Times, are:
Shell Island, located in Llanbedr, was voted Wales' Beach of the Year by The Times.
The Gwynedd beach was commended for a range of things, including its views past Harlech to Eryri National Park and across Cardigan Bay to the Llyn Peninusla.
Shell Island also boasts "one of Europe's biggest campsites" with 300 acres of fields, where pitches range from "convenient" to "wild" and from beachside to woodland.
Day visits are £10 per car and camping pitches are £13 per person (in high season).

Chris Haslam from The Times said: 'I knew Shell Island was a winner when I parked up beside the dunes.
"I could see Eryri (Snowdon) to the north, the Llyn Peninsular to the west and, right in front, a beach of flat sand that glittered with seashells.
"I could have spent a very happy week camping here.'
There is plenty more to like about Shell Island, The Times added.
The news outlest explained: "At the northern end, around the harbour, the shore is rocky — turning to flat, sugar-soft sand as you head south
"The beachcombing is astonishing: perfect scallops, fragile tusks and razors, unblemished turitellas and, most prized by conchologists, tiny cowries."
It is worth checking the tide times before visiting, as the island is cut off for two hours each day during high tide.
Shell Island is also dog-friendly and has a café and toilet facilities.
The Llyn Peninsula is an amazing place to visit, according to The Times, and there are plenty of "joys" just waiting for people to come and visit.
The news outlet explained: "It's home to Britain's best campsite (Bert's Kitchen Garden in Trefor); arguably our best small brewery (Cwrw Llyn in Nefyn); and Wales's most famous pub (Ty Coch, accessible only on foot, on the beach at Porthdinllaen).
"Here you'll also screech along the UK's most musical beach (Porthor — aka Whistling Sands — where the grains are so fine they squeak underfoot), and find an Italianate village that belongs in the Cinque Terre (Portmeirion).
"This coast is like Cornwall in the 1930s."
In the southernmost corner of the Llyn beaches, you will find Aberdaron.
When was the last time you visited Aberdaron? (Image: Getty Images) "A bend of sand a mile wide sheltered by the Mynydd Mawr peninsula, crossed by the River Daron and overlooked by the dining terrace of the delightful Gwesty Ty Newydd hotel," The Times continued.
"The left-hand end of the beach, the only part where dogs are welcome, is the prettiest."
The water quality at Aberdaron beach is rated excellent, while there are also toilets and a café.
It's not just the experts who think highly of Aberdaron beach, but visitors as well, with it boasting a 4.5 rating (out of 5) on Tripadvisor from 93 reviews.
One person, commenting about their beach experience, said: "On my own I really enjoy seeing the children, families and so many happy dogs interacting. There is [also] a dog free area.
"The sea is safe, shallow entry. Beach was a gritty sand, comfortable to walk on, easy to clean off."
When it comes to the best beaches in the UK, Traeth Llanddwyn, located on the south-west corner of Anglesey, is usually always on the list. And it's easy to see why.
Ynys Llanddwyn boasts six "candy coves" and views of Eryri National Park and the Llyn Peninsula. (Image: Patrick Glover) It is described as a "fairytale" beach by The Times and "magical" by visitors on Tripadvisor, where it boasts a near-perfect 4.8 rating from 578 reviews.
The Times said: "After driving through the dark depths of the Newborough Forest you'll come to a three-mile beach.
"To your right, you'll see Llandwyn Island with two white towers, two stone crosses and a ruined church.
"The former are old lighthouses; the latter are dedicated to St Dwynwen, a 5th-century princess who pledged her life to God here on Ynys Llanddwyn after suffering a broken heart.

"She is now Wales's patron saint of lovers — honoured on her feast day of January 25 — and there's an awful lot to love about her island: six sandy coves and views of Eryri and the Llyn, seen as though across an enchanted lake."
The water quality is rated excellent, there are toilet facilities, and it is dog-friendly.
There is also often a good truck in the car park called Y Pantri Bach.

Hotel guest told 'everything in mini fridge is free' but is astounded by contents

Staying in a hotel can be a fun escape from the day to day grind - especially if your room comes with free perks like a stocked mini bar. One person's hotel stay quickly turned sour though A hotel guest was excited after being told everything in the mini fridge in their room was completely 'free' only to be underwhelmed and disappointed by the contents on offer. Staying in a hotel typically means you'll be treated to a little bit of luxury - there's the added convenience of being close to popular hotspots, the comfort and freedom of a break away from the daily routine, and a host of facilities and amenities to take advantage of. ‌ Some hotel rooms are equipped with a mini bar or fridge, usually packed with an array of soft drinks and alcoholic beverages and, oftentimes, snacks, chocolates and more - although these can be expensive. One person recently visited a hotel and was told everything in the mini bar was free. ‌ Upon entering their room and heading to the mini fridge to indulge, they found just one bottle of still water, and nothing else. ‌ Taking to Reddit to share their bemusement with the masses, they posted a photo of the fridge and simply said: ''Everything in the mini bar is free', they said - what disappointing UK hotel experiences have you had?' In the comments section, people were keen to share their worst hotel experiences up and down the nation. One person said: 'I stayed in a hotel in Glasgow in late 2020- their dining room was still closed so you filled in a breakfast order form and they delivered it to your room. ‌ 'I ordered the continental breakfast, which was meant to consist of mini pastries and fruit salad. I got a squashed plain croissant and a whole, unpeeled orange in a brown paper bag.' Another said: 'I once had a hotel booked in London but when we turned up, there was a skip outside and the doors were locked. 'We tried ringing and nobody was answering. They'd just shut down and not cancelled bookings.' ‌ A third shared: 'Someone knocked on my door in a hotel in Wales and handed me a complete Wales Rugby kit, and said it was 'for me'. 'I presumed it was some sort of gift (I was young, and travelling for work - never stayed in [a] nice hotel before). 'Half an hour later the guy came and asked for it back. The Welsh team were staying in the hotel and they'd got the wrong room.' ‌ Someone else commented: 'Went to a gig at Wembley and stayed in a B&B. Breakfast was Tesco value Swiss rolls, ready salted crisps and tea with no milk.' Another Reddit user said: 'I stopped at a B&B near Gatwick airport for a flight the next day. The full English consisted of tinned mushrooms, watery tinned beans, a fresh tomato, cold toast and three tinned hotdog sausages.' Sharing a different experience, one person added: 'In a former life I had Gold (approaching Diamond) status with IHG. 'On a couple of occasions they upgraded me to a suite and gave me a full free minibar and a bottle of champagne. 'I don't miss all of the travel and crippling exhaustion, but I do miss the little perks that made me feel special.'

Jeremy Clarkson's girlfriend shares shocking picture of plane crash after miracle escape

Jeremy Clarkson's partner, Lisa Hogan, was travelling to London from Spain in the 90s when she had a near-death experience on a plane Jeremy Clarkson's girlfriend, Lisa Hogan, 'amazingly' survived a plane crash and took to social media to share a terrifying picture of the wreckage from 1996. The 51-year-old model had the horrifying experience 29 years ago when the plane came off the runway at RAF Northolt in London and hit a van on the A40. ‌ At the time, she was heading into London for a film role when the accident happened. This week, she took to her social media page to share a picture from the wreckage as she recalled the shocking moment that saw no casualties. The picture showed the Spanish Learjet 25 plane split in half after colliding into the van. ‌ ‌ She was living in Palma, Spain and working on the comedy Fierce Creatures from Monty Python and Fawlty Towers actor John Cleese. "Amazingly, the pilots, van drivers, and I survived. I took another flight the same day. And landed safely," she captioned the post on Instagram. It comes after former Top Gear star Jeremy discussed the couple's record on airplanes. The duo 'walked away from three crashes over the years'. ‌ He said to the Sunday Times: "Whenever Lisa and I board an aeroplane, we are usually pretty confident that it will land safely because between us, we've walked away from three crashes over the years. "Both mine involved broken landing gear and were fairly minor, but hers was a proper shunt. She was the only passenger in a Learjet that careered off the end of the runway at Northolt and on to the A40, where it was hit so hard by a van that it split in two. ‌ "It's amazing no one was killed, and if you Google the images, you'll see what I mean." He went on to say that the 'law of averages' suggests they wouldn't be involved in any more crashes. Lisa previously told the Irish Independent she thought "everything was fine for a while" when the plane took off from Palma. Lisa said the captain tried to get her to change seats, but she refused to do so. ‌ "I insisted on sitting where I was, which was just as well because that was the area where the van came through when we crashed and I would have been killed instantly,' she told the publication, with her refusal to move seats possibly saving her life. A few hours later, she booked another flight and returned to Spain.

No plans for England tourism tax, No 10 insists, after claims Rayner backed one

There are 'no plans' to introduce a tourism tax in England, Downing Street said, amid claims that Angela Rayner's efforts to bring one in were rebuffed by the Treasury. The Deputy Prime Minister has been pushing for councils to be allowed to introduce a tax on tourism in their areas as part of the Government's devolution agenda, according to several media reports. Rachel Reeves, however, is said to have blocked the move for fear it would reduce revenues for businesses struggling with higher national insurance contributions and a rise in the minimum wage already brought in by the Government. The Prime Minister's official spokesman would not be drawn into saying whether there were plans for such a tax. 'We have previously said there's no plans to introduce a tourism tax in England,' the spokesman said. He added: 'Places can already choose to introduce a levy on overnight stays through working with their local tourism sector, using the accommodation Business Improvement District model. 'Tourism obviously plays an important role in the UK's economy. Inbound tourism is the UK's third largest service export. 'The UK is the seventh most-visited country in the world, and we're committed to continuing to support the sector.' Pressed again whether a tourism tax had been shelved after an intervention from the Treasury, the spokesman said: 'Well, there's no plans to introduce it.' Chancellor Rachel Reeves earlier sidestepped a question about Ms Rayner's call for a tourist tax. Asked for her response, Ms Reeves said she had made decisions on tax in last year's 'once-in-a-generation budget' which was intended to 'fix the mess' left by the Conservatives. She added: 'We'll have another budget later this year, and I'll be setting out our tax policy there.' A similar levy already exists in Scotland, and the Welsh Government is also in the process of introducing a tourism tax.
