How Jaguars' LB Foye Oluokun is playing key role with implementation of new defense How Jaguars' LB Foye Oluokun is playing a key role in the implementation of the new defensive system.
As the Jacksonville Jaguars' defense learns a new scheme under defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile, linebacker Foye Oluokun has played a valuable role in implementing the new system.
"The pro's pro," Liam Coen said of Oluokun. "He's early to every meeting, sitting down, ready to go. Communicates out there at a really high level. Wants to understand the intent behind each call. He asks phenomenal questions in the meeting room settings, especially when the entire defense is in there.
Oluokun is entering his eighth NFL season and has made an impact on the Jaguars' defense in a variety of ways. In 2023, he ranked 13th in run stops among all linebackers. Oluokun has also been an effective blitzer and provided a coverage element at the linebacker position as well.
That well-rounded skill set can provide Campanile with a lot of flexibility from a game planning perspective with what he asks Oluokun to do.
Last season, we saw strong play from the Green Bay Packers' linebacker unit under Campanile. Rookie Edgerrin Cooper was one of PFF's highest-graded linebackers overall and was a two-time NFC Defensive Player of the Week, and he was the NFC Rookie of the Month in December.
Fourth-year linebacker Quay Walker had arguably his best season and, prior to a Week 15 ankle injury, was on a four-game stretch where he ranked among the best at the linebacker position in pressures, yards per catch allowed, and run stops, according to PFF's metrics.
"Some of the things he brings up really forces engagement within the whole group--the coaches, the players, different position groups," Coen said of Oluokun. "I just think he has a really nice way of communicating things that he may not understand, that maybe other people are not understanding. It just brings collaborative communication together that, like I said, he's a pro's pro."
Just like on the offense under Coen, multiplicity will be a fundamental element on the defensive side of the ball with Campanile. This means having a malleable system that molds to the skill sets that are on the roster and one that is quick to adjust based on what the opponent is doing. In order to have that flexibility, having a versatile presence in the middle, like Oluokun can provide, is an important component.

Jacksonville Jaguars Could Trade Former Green Bay Packers Bust

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Jacksonville Jaguars are coming off of a very disappointing 2024 NFL season, but there are plenty of reasons to be hopeful for the Jaguars heading into 2025. Jacksonville has an entirely new regime at the helm, and if we are being honest, its roster really isn't bad at all. Things definitely hinge on whether or not Trevor Lawrence can finally live up to his lofty billing, but if he does, the Jaguars could be sneaky contenders in the AFC. More news: Green Bay Packers Key Player Could Request a Trade One of Jacksonville's biggest problems last year — outside of Lawrence's struggles — was its defense, which ranked toward the bottom of the league. A big reason for that was a shaky secondary, and safety Darnell Savage was one of the primary culprits. In his first season with the Jaguars after signing a three-year, $22 million contract with the club in free agency, Savage registered 51 tackles, an interception and six passes defended in 2024. He logged a brutal 41.5 coverage grade at Pro Football Focus, picking up right where he left off from his final days with the Green Bay Packers. With the 2025 campaign just around the corner, Logan Ulrich of NFL Trade Rumors has put together a list of potential trade candidates before Week 1, and for the Jaguars, Savage made the list. A Jacksonville Jaguars helmet as seen during Jacksonville Jaguars Mandatory Minicamp at TIAA Bank Field on June 15, 2021 in Jacksonville, the problem, though: Savage really isn't all that tradeable. Jacksonville probably won't have much luck finding any team willing to take on the final two years of his deal, so if the Jags really want to part ways with the veteran, they will probably have to cut him. Savage was originally selected by the Packers with the 21st overall pick of the 2019 NFL Draft. He actually got off to a strong start over his first couple of years in Green Bay, but it didn't take long for the University of Maryland product to fade. By his third NFL season, Savage was beginning to struggle mightily in coverage, and things only got worse from that point moving forward. More news: Pittsburgh Steelers Defender Named Top Trade Candidate It did not come as much of a surprise when the Packers decided to let him walk via free agency last year, especially considering that they landed Xavier McKinney to replace him. What was surprising, however, was that the Jaguars committed such a sizeable contract to the 28-year-old. Jacksonville selected a pair of safeties in the NFL Draft, bagging both Caleb Ransaw and Rayuan Lane, so perhaps Savage's days in Duval really are coming to a close. We'll see if the Jaguars opt to cut ties with him before the regular season begins. For more on the Jaguars and NFL, head to Newsweek Sports.

Saints coach Kellen Moore makes key roster decision before Preseason Week 2 matchup against Jaguars

Saints coach Kellen Moore makes key roster decision before Preseason Week 2 matchup against Jaguars originally appeared on The Sporting News The New Orleans Saints are officially handing the reins to rookie quarterback Tyler Shough, who will start Sunday's preseason matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Head coach Kellen Moore confirmed the decision, according to Adam Schefter via his X account. In his preseason debut, Shough threw for 165 yards and a touchdown, bouncing back from a pick-six with a 54-yard strike that showcased his ability to respond under pressure. That outing added fuel to the conversation about whether he could rise quickly in the Saints' quarterback competition. With Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener also competing for playing time, this game gives Shough a prime opportunity to prove he can command the offense against an aggressive Jacksonville defense. As Hayden Reel of Canal Street Chronicles notes, the Saints' passing attack has room to rebound, and Shough will be at the center of that effort. Moore has made it clear that all three quarterbacks will continue to see action this preseason, but starting against Jacksonville puts the spotlight firmly on Shough. A strong performance could tilt momentum in his favor as the Saints evaluate who gives them the best chance to win heading into the regular season.
