
AIB to sell its 49.9% stake in merchant services joint venture
has agreed to sell its 49.9 per cent stake in AIB Merchant Services, which helps businesses accept card payments from customers, to its joint venture partner, the US financial technology group Fiserv.
The Irish bank booked €34 million of income from its minority stake in 2024. The transaction will have the effect of boosting AIB's capital reserves – measured as common equity Tier 1 – by 0.35 of a percentage point, it said in a statement. This equates to about €215 million.
Goodbody Stockbrokers analyst Denis McGoldrick estimates that two-thirds of the capital boost will come from a gain from the sale, with the remainder resulting from a release of regulatory capital reserves held against the asset.
Founded in 2007, as a joint venture between AIB and Fiserv, AIB Merchant Services (AIBMS) is one of Ireland's largest payment solution providers and one of Europe's largest ecommerce acquirers, providing businesses with the ability to accept card payments from their customers.

There will be no day-to-day change for AIBMS customers as a result of this announcement and no customer action is required, AIB said in its statement.
AIB will continue to work with AIBMS and Fiserv by referring AIB customers who require these services to the company. AIBMS will continue to operate as AIBMS, under a short-term brand agreement, allowing for an orderly exit of the AIB brand from the business.
'Following a successful joint venture partnership, we believe Fiserv has the commitment, experience and innovative technical solutions to grow AIBMS and that our customers will continue to be well-served under their sole ownership,' AIB chief executive Colin Hunt said.
The transaction is expected to be completed later this year subject to relevant regulatory approvals.
'This transaction makes sense for AIB from both a strategic and financial point of view,' said Mr McGoldrick. 'AIB's focus is on delivering enhanced customer outcomes, financing the green transition and operational efficiency and resilience, so a merchant servicing business no longer fits well within those ambitions.'

Moves to revive referendum on joining EU patent court as business groups contacted on timing
There have been tentative moves to revive the delayed referendum on Ireland's participation in the European Union's Unified Patent Court (UPC), with the Government seeking views of business groups on the timing of a rescheduled vote. The referendum on Ireland joining the 18 other EU member states that have signed up to the UPC system was originally pencilled in for June 2024 on the same day as the local and European elections. However, the holding of the UPC referendum was thrown into doubt amid the fallout from the defeat of the family and care referendums three months earlier. Soon afterwards the then-government announced it would be deferring the vote. Peter Burke , then minister for enterprise, said at the time: 'While the government continues to believe that joining the UPC is essential and that the referendum should be pursued, it is clear to me that more time is needed for public discourse and engagement on the matter to help inform the debate.' READ MORE The UPC is designed to provide a one-stop shop court for litigation on patents. The court's decisions will be binding on participating EU member states. Ireland joining in the UPC has been long called for by business groups and sectors such as the pharmaceutical industry. The Department of Enterprise has contacted business organisations and government departments about the referendum. Records released under the Freedom of Information Act include a letter from senior Department of Enterprise official John Newham to the American Chamber of Commerce Ireland (AmCham). The March 28th letter set out how the legislation on the UPC referendum was pending committee and final stages in the Seanad. Mr Newham, the assistant secretary general, wrote that 'once the legislative process has been concluded an order setting a date for the referendum will issue'. He wrote that the timing of any further advancement of the Bill would be subject to a decision by Government and it would decide a referendum date 'in due course'. He noted the last government 'had concluded that a broader public conversation' on the UPC 'was essential before a referendum was held' and he sought feedback 'in order to assess if sufficient engagement is being held on the matter'. Mr Newham asked for information on 'any initiatives undertaken or planned to assist public understanding of this critical issue'. He also sought 'views on the appropriate timing of a referendum'. Enterprise Ireland , IDA Ireland and Research Ireland were among government agencies contacted by the department as it sought feedback on public awareness of the UPC referendum. The Department of Enterprise confirmed that other organisations contacted included Chambers Ireland , Ibec , the Irish Congress of Trade Unions and BioPharmaChem Ireland, all of which, like AmCham sent responses. AmCham, which represents US companies in Ireland, responded on April 30th, saying: 'It is of the utmost importance that an informed discussion occurs to generate public engagement with the topic.' It said it would work with its members to advance discussion and consideration of the UPC. AmCham said a member survey from 2024 showed that 41 per cent of respondents supported Ireland joining the UPC and 58 per cent were neutral on the matter. The organisation said it would be holding a webinar 'outlining the impact for Ireland, with key expert and member perspectives' and it would also be developing a fact sheet on the UPC for dissemination among members. In response to queries AmCham told The Irish Times: 'While we continue to work with members on this topic, a webinar has not taken place.' It said that the timing of the referendum was 'a matter for Government'. A Department of Enterprise statement said: 'While the Government remains committed to holding the referendum, the timing remains under consideration at this juncture.'

THE PREMIER OF the Australian state of Victoria has announced plans to enshrine working from home in law, saying it should be 'a right, not a request'. Under Jacinta Allan's plan, workers would be entitled to work from home at least two days per week, if the job allows. Hilary Weston, who helped build Penneys and Brown Thomas, has died aged 83
Hilary Weston, the Dublin-born businesswoman who helped build Penneys and Brown Thomas as part of her husband Galen Weston 's family retail empire, has died aged 83. Ms Weston died in England, where she lived in recent years. She was prominent in the early days of Penneys after the family business bought the ailing Todd Byrne's department store and established the budget fashion chain. She is said to have personally overseen the production of clothing for the in-house brand the company introduced early on, Primark , which would ultimately give its name to the wider chain outside Ireland. She was later prominent in running Brown Thomas for a considerable time after her husband purchased the long-established retailer. In the years that followed she served as vice-chair of Holt Renfrew, the group's luxury retail chain in Canada. She held a variety of other positions in the wider family's interests, which included the conglomerate Associated British Foods (ABF), of which Penneys was a subsidiary; Fortnum & Mason; and Loblaws, the largest food retailer in Canada. She also oversaw a major property development in Florida. Born Hilary Frayne in Dún Laoghaire in 1942, she was the eldest of five children and attended Loreto Abbey, Dalkey. She started to work as a model in the 1950s and was successful at it, working extensively in Ireland and internationally. She met her future husband after he saw her on a billboard advertisement and had auctioneer Corrie Buckley arrange an introduction. The couple married in 1966. Having initially settled at the Roundwood Park estate in Wicklow, the family moved to Toronto in 1971 and Ms Weston later became a Canadian citizen. In August 1983, the IRA attempted to kidnap Mr Weston at Roundwood but An Garda Síochána had apparently been tipped off. The family was not there and two of the kidnappers were killed, while others were arrested during a gunfight with armed police. The family went on to sell the estate and are said to have become more private afterwards. Mr Weston, who was born in England but brought up in Canada, moved to Ireland in 1962 to establish Power supermarkets. He later took over the Quinnsworth chain before eventually selling the retailer to Tesco in the 1990s. Brown Thomas subsequently acquired the Switzer group of stores and then Arnotts, the Irish operation becoming part of the Selfridges group, which the family sold in 2021 for a price reported to have exceeded €4 billion. Penneys, though, which was established by Arthur Ryan with Galen Weston for ABF in 1969, would ultimately represent the Irish business's greater contribution to the wider group. The company now employs more than 80,000 staff across 17 countries and had sales of close to €11 billion in 2024. The Sunday Times put the wider family's fortune at some £17.75 billion in its most recent rich list. Ms Weston was still involved in various aspects of the business until recent years and played a role well as the many related charitable foundations which had been established to support a range of causes and made donations running into hundreds of millions of euro over the years. In 1979, she set up the Ireland Fund of Canada, a chapter of Tony O'Reilly's Ireland Fund, to raise money for good causes here. Between 1997 and 2002 she served as lieutenant governor of Ontario, donating the salary to an initiative to help young people from poor backgrounds into employment. She also authored two successful books on homes and gardens. She was predeceased by her husband, who died in April 2021, and is survived by their two children, Alannah and Galen jnr, both of whom are involved in the family business.
