IIHF President Luc Tardif Clarifies Position On Russia At Olympics
Naturally, questions from the media were dominated by news that was revealed by numerous sources on Friday that Russia won't be competing in the men's and women's ice hockey tournaments.
According to quotes from HockeyNews.se and Hokej.cz, IIHF President Luc Tardif explained that, ultimately, that decision lies with the International Olympic Committee. And while a decision has not officially been made, the IOC has requested that the IIHF send them schedules that do not include Russian teams.
'The IOC is the organizer – we only deal with the competition (the hockey tournaments) itself,' said Tardif. 'We have been pressuring them to make a decision, one way or another, because we're getting closer to the Olympics and we need to know.'
Tardif continued, 'Recently they asked us to send them a schedule without Russia, so that's where we are. The official statement is pending but the IOC has told us that they are informing the Russian Olympic Committee that they are not participating in the Olympics.'
So the IIHF has sent the IOC schedules for the men's and women's hockey tournaments that don't include Russian teams, and we should soon expect to hear from the IOC that Russian teams won't be allowed to participate.

Russia Excluded From 2026 Olympic Ice Hockey Tournaments Numerous international media outlets are reporting that the International Ice Hockey Federation has made the decision to ban Russian teams from competing in the men's and women's ice hockey tournaments at the Olympic Winter Games next February in Milan, Italy. The decision was reportedly made at Friday's annual congress in Stockholm, Sweden.

President Trump will sign an executive order Tuesday creating a task force to oversee the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, and he's putting himself in charge of it, the White House confirmed Monday. Reuters news service first reported the task force, which it said would work on security, transportation and visa processing. California Gov. Gavin Newsom and LA Mayor Karen Bass — both of whom have a contentious relationship with the president — have not yet responded to news of the task force. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement that Mr. Trump had been "instrumental in securing America's bid to host the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles," and he "considers it a great honor to oversee this global sporting spectacle in his second term." Casey Wasserman, the chair and president of the LA Olympics said in a statement, "On behalf of LA28, I want to express our deep appreciation to President Trump and his Administration for their leadership and unwavering support as we prepare to deliver the largest and most ambitious Olympic and Paralympic Games ever hosted in the United States." He added that since LA had won its bid to host the Olympics in 2028, "President Trump has consistently recognized the magnitude of our responsibility in welcoming the world to Los Angeles," and he praised the creation of the task force. In Feburary, Mr. Trump signed an executive order directing the office of the secretary of state and homeland security secretary to "review and adjust" policies permitting transgender athletes and issue guidance to try to prevent them from entering the U.S. The order also directed the secretary of state to press the International Olympic Committee to stop transgender athletes from competing in women's sporting events. Mr. Trump also chairs a federal task force to oversee preparations for the 2026 World Cup, which the United States, Canada and Mexico will host jointly. The Trump-backed One Big Beautiful Bill Act sets aside $1 billion in federal funding to pay for security and planning for the Olympics, plus $625 million for World Cup security.

Trump to sign executive order establishing Olympics task force ahead of 2028 Los Angeles Games
President Donald Trump is set to sign an executive order to create a White House Olympics task force for security purposes and other issues ahead of the 2028 Games in Los Angeles. The task force is to be made up of members of Trump's cabinet as well as government agencies, an administration official told Reuters. One of the task force's top priorities will be coordinating federal, state and local government work on transportation. They will also "streamline visa processing and credentialing for foreign athletes, coaches, officials, and media," per an email to Reuters. "During his first term, President Trump was instrumental in securing America's bid to host the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles," White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement on Monday. "The president considers it a great honor to oversee this global sporting spectacle in his second term." LA28 chair and president Casey Wasserman said the task force "marks an important step forward in our planning efforts and reflects our shared commitment to delivering not just the biggest, but the greatest Games the world has ever seen in the summer of 2028." Wasserman is expected to join Trump at the White House on Tuesday afternoon for the signing. Before that, the United States will be a host site for the FIFA World Cup, something Trump has expressed a great deal of pleasure in welcoming in 2026. While Canada and Mexico will be auxiliary hosts, the main host country for the World Cup will be the United States. It is the first tournament to be hosted by three nations. The U.S. holds 11 of the 16 cities serving as hosts for the soccer event, with the final being played in East Rutherford, New Jersey's MetLife Stadium. So, while this task force will be planning for 2028, the United States will have security protocols in place for the World Cup, which could be used two years afterward as well. Los Angeles has been a host site for two Olympic Games, the first of which was in 1932 and the most recent in 1984. The LA28 Opening Ceremony is slated for July 14, 2028, and the competition will run through July 30. There are also the LA28 Paralympic Games, which will begin on Aug. 15, 2028 and go through Aug. 27, 2028.
