Passenger slapped on Mumbai-Kolkata flight, IndiGo responds to viral video
According to sources, the victim appeared to be unwell and was receiving assistance from the cabin crew when another passenger suddenly slapped him without any provocation. A video clip circulating online shows the victim in visible distress, crying after the slap, while another passenger can be heard asking, 'Why did you slap him? You don't have any right to hit anybody.' A crew member is also heard telling the accused, 'Don't do [that].'
Attacker handed over to authorities
Upon landing in Kolkata, the accused was handed over to security personnel at the airport. The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) took the individual into custody for further investigation.
The airline declared the individual as "unruly" and stated that relevant aviation security agencies had been informed in line with protocol.
IndiGo's response
IndiGo, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), said, 'We are aware of an incident involving a physical altercation on board one of our flights. Such unruly behaviour is completely unacceptable, and we strongly condemn any actions that compromise the safety and dignity of our passengers and crew.'
The airline added, 'Our crew acted in accordance with established Standard Operating Procedures. The individual involved was identified as unruly and handed over to the security authorities upon arrival. All appropriate regulatory agencies have been duly informed, in line with protocol. We remain committed to maintaining a safe and respectful environment on all our flights.'
Public outrage
The video sparked outrage across social media, with many calling for strict action against the attacker. One user on X wrote, 'This isn't society collapsing, it's decades of hate politics finally reaching cruising altitude.'
Another commented, 'What level of harassment and abuse is this? Just slapping a guy because he was a visible Muslim? What action have you taken against him? He should be behind bars and banned from travelling.'
A third added, 'What right does that person have to hit anyone? Pathetic!'
The reason behind the assault remains unknown as of now, and investigations are ongoing.

The arrest came on Saturday night after Thana Bhawan police received information about his real identity. Police raided the temple and took him into custody for questioning. During the search, police recovered three Aadhaar cards and one PAN card from Ansari. One Aadhaar card carried the name 'Bangali Nath' and an address linked to a temple in Saharanpur. The other two Aadhaar cards and the PAN card mentioned his original name, Imamuddin Ansari and an address in Alipurduar district, West Bengal. Shamli SP Ramsevak Gautam said, 'A case has been filed against the accused under charges of making fake documents and hurting religious sentiments. The accused was produced before the Kairana court and has been sent to judicial custody for 14 days." Police have dispatched a team to West Bengal to verify the address and gather details about Ansari's background. Officials will check whether he has any previous criminal record and how the fake Aadhaar card was obtained. Police are also investigating if any other people were involved in changing his name in official documents. SP Gautam said no suspicious documents, bank accounts or evidence of religious conversion have been found so far. 'The matter is being thoroughly investigated. Strict action will be taken based on the facts that come out," he added. Hindu Groups React The incident has triggered anger among local Hindu organisations. District Math Mandir Pramukh Bharat Bhushan said the matter is 'unexpected and serious" and demanded strict police action. He added that temple organisations would start monitoring similar cases across the district. VHP District Service Chief Vinni Rana and District General Secretary Shalu Rana also condemned the act. They said their workers would keep a watch on people posing as sadhus in rural areas. 'Any conspiracy against Sanatan will not be allowed to succeed," said Shalu Rana. Singh's former colleague, dismissed RPF head constable Narendra Parmar, a crucial eye witness, started his deposition with a long hard look at Singh. Parmar's examination in chief by additional public prosecutor Sudhir Sapkale was left incomplete in March because a hospitalised Singh could not be present in court, even through video conferencing. When it resumed on Monday, Parmar described the chilling encounter between Singh and one of his victims, as well as the fear that gripped passengers as the armed cop moved from compartment to compartment. Parmar had earlier deposed that he had seen Singh take with him a bearded, kurta-clad passenger at gunpoint. He later saw the passenger's body lying in a pool of blood on the floor near the pantry car. As he followed Singh, said Parmar, he saw him stop and talk to another bearded passenger wearing a grey kurta. Parmar could hear him 'begging for mercy' and telling Singh: 'I am an ordinary Mullaji. I too believe in God. Bhagwan and Allah are the same.' Singh looked angry at that moment, said Parmar, adding: 'I felt he would kill me too.' This time too, said Parmar, there were passengers between him and Singh, as well as behind Singh. Hence, though he was carrying a pistol, he could not prevent Singh from firing two bullets into the passenger's chest. As he had after the first shooting, Parmar called his colleague Amey Acharya, who was in another part of the train, to tell him what had happened and asked him to inform the control room. The train then came to a halt between Mira Road and Dahisar stations as someone pulled the chain, Parmar said. As he went towards compartment S5, Parmar met guard Vijay Jena who had come there to inquire about what had happened. On the south side of the compartment, they saw two bodies lying on the floor, oozing blood. One of the passengers, whom Parmar identified as Ibrahim Batatawala, told them that he had pulled the chain because 'one of your staff was threatening us'. The passengers, who all seemed scared, also told them that as soon as the train had stopped, Singh had jumped off and was walking along the tracks. Shaken by what he had seen, Jena asked Parmar to accompany him to the guard's cabin. Later, when the train was taken to the Bombay Central railway yard, Parmar showed the spots where he had seen the two bodies to the deputy station superintendent, the police personnel who had come there and the videographer. In court, Parmar identified the photographs of the two passengers whom he had witnessed being threatened and shot by Singh. His deposition will continue on Tuesday.
