Cape Town's record cruise season wraps: Who's docking in 2025-26?
With its dedicated cruise terminal at the V&A Waterfront, world-class infrastructure, and ever-expanding itinerary of global routes, Cape Town is cementing itself as a must-do cruise stop - not just for international luxury liners, but also for homegrown themed experiences, all set to return aboard the MSC Opera in 2026.

'Our world-class infrastructure, coupled with Cape Town's natural beauty and diverse experiences, makes us a compelling stop on any global cruise itinerary.'
As the 2024/25 season came to a close with the departure of the Crown Princess on 29 June, the city is already charting a bold course for 2025/26. Expect bigger ships, themed voyages, more maiden calls, and continued investment in what's fast becoming one of the continent's most exciting tourism sectors.

This African country could be getting a massive new high-speed rail network
Sure, in Europe and Asia, high-speed rail is booming, but Time Out reported recently that huge plans for such railways to connect three major Moroccan cities were also in the works. Now, another African country is looking to take huge infrastructure leaps, and it just got one step closer to making those goals a reality. The country in question? That would be Nigeria, where on Tuesday August 12, a syndicate of construction companies and developers, De-Sadel Consortium, brought a high-speed rail proposal to the government. Set to be funded by the Asian Development Investment Bank (a China-backed institution, which is one of the largest of its kind on the planet), it's projected to cost a staggering – wait for it – $60 billion. According to Newsweek, the railway could stretch to 2,500 miles and the first phase of the project will connect the cities of Lagos, Aduja, Kano and Port Harcourt, with journey time between those first two cities slashed from 12 hours to a mere three. If approved, this first phase (which itself will cost an estimated $55 billion) will commence sometime in the next few years, once it has passed environmental authorisations, reports Ecofin Agency. 'The rail line is from Lagos to Abuja, to Kano, and from Abuja to Port Harcourt. So this is a very great work that the government has done. The federal government of Nigeria, through the ICRC, approved the outline business case,' said De-Sadel Consortium CEO Samuel Uko. 'And the next step now was for us to submit the proof of funds to the government, which we just did. So I believe in the shortest possible time, Nigeria will start enjoying high-speed rail in Nigeria.' So, while this project is still awaiting approval from the Government of the Federation, and there's no clear timeline for its completion yet, it all sounds like an exciting development for the region. This stunning resort combines luxurious accommodation with exclusive behind-the-scenes access to the zoo's globally recognised wildlife. Aiming to revolutionise how UK travellers experience conservation, the reserve boasts 51 beautifully designed lodges. Some overlook a private savannah where giraffes, zebras and blesbok antelope roam freely, while others are tucked away beside a tranquil lake. The resort is expected to draw an additional 35,000 visitors to the North West each year, attracting nature enthusiasts from across the UK and beyond. People coming up on the train, staying here for a night and then going onto North Wales." When prices were initially disclosed, there was some resistance from potential customers. In January, the zoo announced that bookings were opening for The Reserve, with 51 newly-built huts available for overnight stays at the expansive Cheshire estate for the first time. Chester Zoo had previously stated that prices would "start from £375 a night off season based on two people staying". (Image: Chester Zoo) However, the official booking site revealed that the lowest prices for mid-week dates in August, during the peak school holiday season, were £576.20 for two people, or from £1,000 for a family of two adults and two children for an overnight stay in a lakeside lodge. For those desiring to stay in a more premium giraffe view lodge, the price was even higher, starting from £1,319.20 on dates in August based on four people staying, or from £867 for two people. In response to customer complaints about The Reserve overnight stay pricing on Facebook at the time, a Chester Zoo spokesperson wrote: "As an international wildlife charity we wholly rely on public funding to carry out our species-saving work. "The Reserve is the latest way that people may wish to help to directly fund our global conservation projects and make a difference to the future of some amazing, but sadly endangered, species. "A stay at The Reserve includes so much more than a room for the night. Packages include elements such as a range of exclusive behind-the-scenes and animal experiences, breakfast, dinner and out-of-hours access to the zoo, as well as two-day passes and the chance to view wildlife straight from your lodge balcony." (Image: Chester Zoo) Speaking to Jamie earlier today, he provided further details about the cost structure, whilst Chester Zoo also confirmed the rates, which you can see listed below. "The price is demand-led so if you want to come mid-summer or on a bank holiday it will be just like any other hotel, but at the moment for a couple, the price starts from £190 but that includes breakfast, £50 meal voucher and entry into the zoo, so if you strip that back, accommodation is about £100," he said. "We have lots of different types of rooms depending on people's budgets so we have some very high-end rooms with their own gardens, giraffe feeding stations, steam showers, free-standing bathtubs on the balconies. "Then we have the family rooms as well that can sleep for, while some can sleep 12 as well, so lots of different ways to be inclusive and that can be booked through the website, allowing people to find the best deals for them."
