Glendale mail carrier is honored as a neighborhood hero, all in a day's work
A Glendale mail carrier was honored Thursday for his neighborhood heroics for helping to fight a house fire during his mail delivery shift earlier this year. Carrier Victor Castaneda, while working in the Verdugo Viejo neighborhood in February, noticed smoke rising from a rooftop on East California Avenue. As the smoke thickened and flames began to engulf the century-old duplex, Castaneda rushed over and grabbed a neighbor's garden hose to try to help with the fire, as the resident and a roofing crew struggled to contain it. Firefighters arrived as the flames and smoke intensified, and although the home was destroyed, the adjacent structure was saved. The resident, Anita Siraki, called the Glendale post office to thank Castaneda for his help and for risking his safety. "For 250 years, the Postal Service has served as an anchor to bind the nation and the communities we serve. Employees like Victor are a prime embodiment of that endearing commitment to service," said Glendale Postmaster Prince Vann IV. The U.S. Postal Service Postmaster General Heroes' Program was created in 2003 to commend USPS employees who go above and beyond the call of duty in various situations. Over 5,500 Postal Service employees have been named PMG heroes, as they not only deliver mail but also serve as the eyes and ears of communities.

Drones help find dog with jar stuck on head in Pennsylvania
A dog with a jar stuck on its head was rescued in central Pennsylvania after a two-day search involving multiple organizations and two drone pilots. Canine Rescue of Central PA said the search for the dog began on Monday after she was spotted in the area of Dillsburg, York County, with a pretzel jar on her head. The rescue teamed up with Find Toby in PA and continued to search throughout the day. The operation stretched on into Tuesday, and as one group wrapped up at 10 p.m., another stepped in, "along with two remarkable drone pilots whose help changed everything," the rescue said in a Facebook post. Around 3 a.m. Wednesday, Dallas, named in honor of drone pilot Dallas Fuhrman, was found deep in a cornfield, disoriented, exhausted, and still stuck in the jar. "Thanks to calm coordination and incredible teamwork," the rescue said Dallas was safely captured and rushed to the vet. At the time, she was severely dehydrated, engorged with ticks and clearly in distress. Dallas is now beginning her recovery, and in an update posted on Wednesday, the rescue said the vet called her resilient, and considering all she's been through, her bloodwork looks pretty good. Now they're working on slowly feeding her and getting a foster home lined up. "The rescue of Dallas was only possible because of a compassionate community that refused to give up. From drone pilots to search teams to every person who kept sharing her story — Thank you!!!" the nonprofit wrote on Facebook.

Part of Delta plane wing breaks off mid-flight: See video
A Delta Air Lines flight heading from Orlando to Austin experienced a malfunction that caused a part of one of its wings to detach. Delta flight 1893 flew from Florida to Texas on Aug. 19 with 'a portion of the left wing's flap … not in place,' the airline said in a statement. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, safely landed at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport around 2:30 p.m. local time after departing Orlando International Airport around 12:55 p.m., according to FlightAware data. There were six crew members and 62 passengers on board, the airline said, noting the aircraft has been taken out of operation for maintenance. Two flights scheduled on Aug. 20 were cancelled due to the matter. 'We apologize to our customers for their experience as nothing is more important than the safety of our people and customers,' the airline's statement continued. Shanila Arif, one of the passengers on board, told KXAN, an NBC affiliate, she noticed an issue shortly after takeoff. 'While the plane was at an altitude of approximately 12,000 feet, we noticed that a part of the wing had broken and was visibly detached,' she said, calling the ordeal a 'serious safety event.' Arif separately told CNN she felt bad turbulence during the flight. "The plane was shaking," she said. "The lady in front of us opened the window and told us it is broken. I opened the window and got scared.' She recorded footage showing the piece of the flap coming off of the wing. She said she was worried that it would detach, hit the tail and cause an accident. There were no reported injuries. The Federal Aviation Administration says it is investigating the incident. It's not the only issue involving a Delta plane this month. On Aug. 10, a Delta plane was pushing back from the gate at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport when its right wingtip struck the left winglet of a parked Airbus A350. The incident occurred in a part of the airport where air traffic controllers do not communicate with flight crews, the FAA said. Following the strike, the aircraft returned to the gate, and passengers deplaned and boarded another aircraft, FlightAware data shows. No one was hurt.
