Centre to procure 1,500 more handheld X-ray machines to boost TB elimination programme
New Delhi [India], July 9 (ANI): In a major boost to the TB-Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, the Centre will soon procure nearly 1,500 more handheld X-ray machines to facilitate large-scale screening and early detection of Tuberculosis (TB) cases, according to a government source.
Currently, around 500 such portable X-ray devices are deployed at screening centers across the country.
'We started TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan with 347 districts, and now all districts are running this campaign after seeing the micro strategies and achievements. They are all participating in training and other programs. These portable X-ray machines will give a boost to the campaign,' the source said.
The source added that the TB elimination process must be sustained until every case is addressed. 'We should sustain this process till we finish TB one by one. TB is not a disease that can be treated overnight. It is a continuous process because latent bacteria remain in the body, and whenever the immunity reduces, then bacteria start multiplying.'
The TB Elimination Campaign aims to eradicate tuberculosis by providing timely identification and comprehensive treatment to patients. The Centre provides free treatment, examination, and medicines under this program.
Over 46,000 Gram Panchayats in the country have been declared TB-free.
'Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh lead the tally with the maximum number of Panchayats declared TB-free. Uttarakhand outshines among geographically smaller states, with a remarkable reduction in TB incidence rate,' sources said.
Earlier, Union Health Minister JP Nadda noted that during the 100-day TB-Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, large-scale screenings were conducted for vulnerable populations, including asymptomatic individuals, those with contact to TB patients, undernourished individuals, and those with chronic comorbidities such as diabetes and HIV.
India is one of the top global funders of TB research, and RT-PCR machines used during the COVID pandemic are adapted for use in TB screening. Similarly, indigenous diagnostic kits developed by the ICMR not only reduce the cost of TB detection but also improve efficiency by conducting 32 tests simultaneously. Hand-held X-ray machines with AI support have also played a huge role in detecting asymptomatic TB,' the source said.
After seeing the results of the 100-day TB Mukt program launched in December 2024, the Centre extended it for more months nationwide. (ANI)

GMCH, AIIMS-N Set Benchmarks In Organ Donation & Transplant, Win National Awards
Nagpur: The city has emerged as a national beacon in the field of organ donation and transplantation, with the Government Medical College & Hospital (GMCH), Nagpur, and AIIMS-Nagpur receiving prestigious awards at the 15th Indian Organ Donation Day (IODD) organized in New Delhi on Saturday. GMCH was conferred the 'Best Brain Stem Death Certifying Team' award while AIIMS-Nagpur bagged the 'Emerging Govt Institution in Organ Donation and Transplantation' award. The awards, presented by Union health minister JP Nadda at the event organised by the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, mark a significant milestone in Vidarbha's growing leadership in public healthcare and transplant services. On behalf of GMCH, medical superintendent Dr Avinash Gawande received the award that recognizes exemplary work in facilitating organ donation through accurate and ethical certification procedures. Over the past year, GMCH facilitated 11 cadaveric organ donations, resulting in the retrieval of 21 kidneys, 10 livers, and 18 corneas. The hospital has so far performed 90 kidney transplants, including India's first robotic kidney transplant in a govt hospital conducted on July 20, 2025. AIIMS-Nagpur was honoured for its rapid and impactful entry into the organ transplantation space. Since initiating its transplant programme in December 2022, AIIMS-Nagpur recorded 22 deceased organ donations, including 18 brain stem deaths (BSD) and 4 Donation after Circulatory Death (DCD) cases. Notably, AIIMS-Nagpur became the first AIIMS in the country and only the third medical institution in India to successfully perform a DCD-based organ transplant, setting a precedent for other govt institutions. Speaking on the national recognition for GMCH, Dr Gawande said, "This reflects the commitment of our entire team to provide ethical, advanced, and life-saving care through organ transplantation." Dr PP Joshi, executive director of AIIMS-Nagpur, stressed that this is just the beginning. "AIIMS-Nagpur is committed to making a long-term impact in this field. We aim to create a model that blends clinical excellence with compassion and public awareness," he said. GMCH dean Dr Raj Gajbhiye announced that the Superspeciality Hospital (SSH) is ready to handle all kinds of organ transplants. "The heart transplant is expected to begin within two months. Raj bags 2 national awards for organ donation efforts
1 2 Jaipur: Rajasthan received two national awards in the categories of Emerging State in Organ Donation and Transplantation and Excellence in Promotion of Organ Donation, for its outstanding work in organ donation and extensive public awareness efforts. At a function held at Dr Ambedkar International Center in New Delhi Saturday, Union health minister J P Nadda presented these awards. Awards were received by the medical education team from Rajasthan, including medical education secretary Ambrish Kumar and medical education commissioner Iqbal Khan. Health minister Gajendra Khimsar said, "Organ donation is the greatest gift of life, a virtuous act of giving someone a new life. Delhi Plans State Transplant Body To Up Organ Donations
New Delhi: Health minister Pankaj Kumar Singh formally proposed the formation of a dedicated Delhi State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO) to address the growing mismatch between organ demand and availability. The proposal comes ahead of National Organ Donation Day on Aug 3, observed annually to raise awareness and encourage people to pledge their organs. Singh said the occasion underscores the urgency of building robust systems that make it easier for families to donate organs. In a letter to Union health minister JP Nadda, Singh highlighted that Delhi — home to premier tertiary hospitals and a referral hub for the northern region — urgently needed SOTTO. At present, the city lacks a state-level transplant coordination body, which experts say hinders effective organ retrieval and allocation, especially from deceased donors. A dedicated SOTTO is expected to improve organ registry updates, strengthen hospital coordination, and facilitate faster matching of organs with recipients. Singh said the health department, in coordination with Indian govt's Directorate General of Health Services, has already taken proactive steps to build infrastructure and deploy trained personnel. "The proposal was submitted in accordance with the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act (THOTA), and we are ready to operationalise SOTTO at a suitable location," he wrote to Nadda. Speaking to TOI, the minister said streamlining transplants through the local SOTTO would reduce preventable deaths caused by delays. "A state-level body can improve awareness, counselling, retrieval and allocation, particularly for deceased donations." The letter added that the initiative would mark a significant milestone for the organ donation movement in Delhi and build public and stakeholder trust in ethical, transparent transplantation services. Dr Satyajit Kumar, state nodal officer for the THOTA cell, said the priority was to boost deceased organ transplants. "One deceased donor can save up to eight people," he said. "Living donations are limited, so we must strengthen brain death identification, train hospital staff, simplify legal procedures and honour donor families. Public awareness campaigns and better hospital systems are key to making deceased donation a sustainable, life-saving solution.
