Chad Finn sat down with Greg Whiteley, the director of 'The Clubhouse'. Among other things, they discussed Alex Cora's knack for relating to players and knowing what they need in a given moment. This included playing Wilyer Abreu when his grandmother had just died, rather than giving him the day off. (Chad Finn, Boston Globe)

Red Sox Outfielder Ceddanne Rafaela Draws Comparisons to Pete Crow-Armstrong

Red Sox Outfielder Ceddanne Rafaela Draws Comparisons to Pete Crow-Armstrong originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Pete Crow-Armstrong's breakout 2025 season has showcased all the tell-tale signs of MVP-level talent. His skillset, which combines power, speed, contact-hitting, and Gold Glove defense, makes him one of MLB's few five-tool players. However, PCA differentiates himself from the other five-tool players by excelling in all aspects of the game. Advertisement Thus far, PCA is establishing himself as one of the game's top talents. But there are some out there that think a Boston Red Sox outfielder isn't far behind. According to Chad Jennings of The Athletic, Boston thinks centerfielder Ceddanne Rafaela is close to, not just a breakout, but a PCA-type breakout. Jennings had this to report: 'The easiest path for the Boston Red Sox to promote top prospect Roman Anthony, give him regular playing time, and perhaps jolt their lagging offense would be to move versatile center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela to the infield and use Anthony in center. Boston Red Sox center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela (3), right, celebrates catching a fly out against the Detroit Han / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images "It hasn't happened, in part, because the Red Sox see Rafaela as one of the truly elite defenders in baseball and believe he may be on the verge of a breakout akin to what the Chicago Cubs' Pete Crow-Armstrong has delivered this season.' Advertisement Rafaela hasn't exactly seen much success at the plate this season, hitting to the tune of a .252/.296/.411 slash line with 6 home runs (made history with shortest walk-off home run on Wednesday) and seven stolen bases. At a mere glance, a performance at this level isn't reminiscent of PCA at all. When not including his defense, his .296 on-base percentage has made him a contributor to the team's ever-growing litany of woes. Still, Jennings thinks his stats don't truly represent his talent, and he may be right. Rather than his stat line, Jennings points to Rafaela's metrics to make his point. When looking at PCA's Baseball Savant page alongside Rafaela's, they both look nearly the same. Both barrel the ball at similarly high rates, have near-identical fielding metrics, sprint at similar speeds, and draw walks at low rates. Besides the low walk rate, everything else is a plus. Rafaela also makes more hard contact than PCA. But even if the PCA comparison turns out to be a little bit of a stretch, should Rafaela just find the right launch angle and draw more walks, he could still be a five-tool asset for Boston. Jeff Passan Calls Out Red Sox For 'Lack of Urgency' Amid Roman Anthony Decision

Jeff Passan Calls Out Red Sox For 'Lack of Urgency' Amid Roman Anthony Decision originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Boston Red Sox have been struggling in their recent games, falling further behind the playoff field for the 2025 season. One of the main talking points hasn't been the record, however, but the team's decision not to call up top prospect Roman Anthony. Advertisement During a segment on the Section 10 Podcast, ESPN MLB insider Jeff Passan called out the Red Sox for their lack of urgency. Passan also criticized the Red Sox for their inconsistent plans and questionable decision-making following an 'urgent' offseason. "The lack of urgency is what surprises me," Passan said. "Putting Kristian Campbell on the opening day roster was an urgent move. Trading for Garrett Crochet was an urgent move. Signing Alex Bregman was an urgent move. Where'd the urgency go?" With the moves the Red Sox made in the offseason, there was a sense of urgency. Campbell starting on the big league roster form day one is an urgent move. The additions of Crochet and Bregman are urgent, or win-now moves. Leaving Anthony in Triple-A in comparison, is a befuddling decision. Advertisement Passan is far from the only person in the MLB world that's questioning the Red Sox indecision with their top prospect. At 21 years old, Anthony is the best prospect in baseball, and should be on the MLB roster. Through the first 55 games of the Worcester Red Sox's season in the Minor Leagues, Anthony is hitting .296 with 9 home runs. He also has 24 RBI, 3 stolen bases, 60 hits, 9 doubles, 2 triples, and an impressive 53-46 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Boston Red Sox outfielder Roman Anthony (48) is congratulated after he scored a run against the Philadelphia Phillies during the third inning at BayCare Klement Neitzel-Imagn Images The decision to leave Anthony in the Minor Leagues isn't a statistical one, as he's more than proved he's capable of getting the call-up. Insiders like Passan are also unsure of what the Red Sox are doing. With a season slowly unraveling, the Red Sox are running out of time to make the postseason. Advertisement It's still early, but each day Anthony isn't on the MLB roster, that's one game potentially lost. With a competitive postseason field in the American League, one game could be the difference in the Red Sox making the postseason or not. Passan's call-out of the Red Sox stems from the team's decision to keep Anthony in the Minor Leagues. He questions the teams thought process, especially with how the Red Sox's season is currently unfolding. Red Sox CBO Criag Breslow Has 'Confidence' In Alex Cora Amid Hot Seat Rumors

Red Sox CBO Criag Breslow Has 'Confidence' In Alex Cora Amid Hot Seat Rumors originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Boston Red Sox have gotten off to a disappointing start to the 2025 season. Despite having the organizational talent to compete for a postseason berth, the team is falling in the standings, sitting at 30-34 through the first two months of the season. That start has put Red Sox manager Alex Cora on the hot seat. Advertisement During The Greg Hill Show on WEEI, Red Sox Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow was asked about whether Cora was on the hot seat or not. Breslow expressed confidence in Cora amid the team's slow start and believes Cora can help turn this season around. "We're always going to be anchored to what is best for the team, and we have a lot of confidence in Alex as the leader of this group," said Breslow. "We have conversations daily about everything that we can do to get us back on track. That's where our main focus is, and that's where it will remain." Breslow was then asked a follow-up question of whether he believes Cora has what it takes to help turn the Red Sox's season around. His answer was short and clear: "I do." Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora (13) in the dugout before the game against the Atlanta Braves at Truist Zanine-Imagn Images Cora has been the center of attention for the Red Sox for a multitude of reasons. The team, since May 24th, has lost eight of their 11 games. In the American League East, the Red Sox sit nine games behind the New York Yankees and are currently four games behind the last Wild Card spot in the American League. Advertisement Facing an uphill battle to make the postseason, Cora and the Red Sox need to turn things around quickly. While there has been speculation over whether Cora should be fired or not, Breslow's answer all but shuts down the possibility of Cora getting fired mid-season. At least, for now. The Red Sox are still within striking distance of the postseason, and a turnaround will right all wrongs for Boston. But, between the losing record and the frustration surrounding the call-up of Roman Anthony, Cora isn't in the good graces of the Red Sox fandom. While some believe Cora is on the hot seat, Breslow's comments on Cora indicate that they don't plan to make any changes for some time. For now, Cora has the trust of his front office to turn things around, and a slightly cooler seat.
