LUXEMBOURG : A Luxembourg court fined Edmond de Rothschild bank €25 million (RM120.66 million) on Thursday for its role in a money-laundering scandal in which Malaysian wealth fund 1MDB lost billions of dollars.
'This is the first time that a Luxembourg banking establishment has been convicted in a money laundering case,' the Grand Duchy's judicial authorities noted following the punishment involving the misappropriation of money from 1MDB.
The fund, created in 2009 as then prime minister Najib Razak sought to modernise Malaysia, soon found itself embroiled in corruption allegations, leading to a swathe of investigations notably in Switzerland, Singapore and the US.
'A very large portion of the funds raised by 1MDB was siphoned off … particularly between 2009 and 2013, by the prime minister, Malaysian officials, and others,' the court stated.
In Luxembourg, which hosts the European subsidiary of Switzerland's Edmond de Rothschild bank, dozens of accounts opened at the establishment by an Emirati national in the name of a slew of different companies were used to divert money away from the fund.
An investigation that was opened in the Grand Duchy in 2016 'established that through complex international financial flows, funds from 1MDB were ultimately credited to the bank accounts of several of these entities'.
Before arriving in the accounts, the cash moved through a number of different financial jurisdictions, including Caribbean tax havens, the court said.
The bank stressed in a statement that the events had taken place '15 years ago' and had led to the 'implementation of a comprehensive remediation plan … (which was) completed in 2019.'
'The employees involved are no longer part of the organisation,' the statement read.
Najib, 71, who served as prime minister from 2009 to 2018, was found guilty two years later of abuse of power and misappropriation of funds. The 1MDB scandal essentially cost him the 2018 general election as well.
He was initially sentenced to 12 years in prison in 2020 but the sentence was halved by a pardons board in February last year.
The former prime minister is currently seeking to have his jail term converted to house arrest.
Thursday's judgment closes the case regarding criminal liability of the bank.
Two other investigations are ongoing, one concerning the Emirati client and his companies, and the other targeting executives and employees of Edmond de Rothschild Europe.

Amsterdam riot report: Police overwhelmed by blitz attacks on Israeli fans

AMSTERDAM, June 16 — Amsterdam police trying to contain attacks on fans of Israeli football club Maccabi Tel Aviv in November were overwhelmed by assailants' hit-and-run tactics and rapid incitement via social media, according to a report published today. The violence in the early hours of November 8, 2024, followed two days of skirmishes that saw Maccabi fans chant anti-Arab songs, vandalise a taxi and burn a Palestinian flag. The attacks left five people briefly hospitalised. Police acted with 'great commitment, flexibility and professionalism', concluded the report by an oversight body in the justice ministry. Authorities were able to deploy 1,200 officers, drones, arrest squads, horses and water cannons but were still caught off-guard by the fast-moving events. 'Although the police acted decisively, they were also overtaken at times by the speed and unpredictability of developments,' the report noted. 'Blitz attacks by small groups of rioters, using taxis and scooters to move around quickly and target Jewish people on the streets, made different demands on the approach taken by the police.' Social media was another key factor in making the violence difficult to contain, the report said. 'People were able to spread messages and images at lightning speed, thereby heightening existing tensions,' it noted. 'Relatively minor incidents, such as the removal of a Palestinian flag by Maccabi supporters, were shared, interpreted, and magnified within minutes.' The report also criticised reactions in the immediate aftermath of the violence. Israeli President Isaac Herzog talked of an 'anti-Semitic pogrom' while Amsterdam mayor Femke Halsema drew parallels between the violence and 'memories of pogroms'. She later regretted this, saying the word had been used as propaganda. 'What stands out is the speed with which everyone expressed an opinion in the aftermath of the events,' said the report. 'Politicians, administrators, and the media immediately jumped to conclusions, without having any insight into exactly what had occurred.' — AFP

Court slaps stadium bans, fines on ‘Madrid hates Real' plotters behind Vinicius Jr effigy stunt

MADRID, June 16 — Four people have been handed suspended jail sentences by a Madrid Court after being found guilty of a hate crime related to an effigy of Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr, Spain's LaLiga said in a statement today. They were all involved in hanging a banner reading 'Madrid hates Real' and an inflatable black effigy in a replica of the Brazilian's No. 20 shirt on a bridge before a Copa del Rey match against Atletico Madrid in January 2023. According to the ruling, one defendant was sentenced to 15 months in prison for a hate crime and an additional seven months for making threats, having distributed images of the act online. The other three were sentenced to seven months in prison for hate crimes and seven months for threats. They will not serve prison time, however, after all four signed a letter of apology to Vinicius, Real Madrid, LaLiga and the Spanish football federation (RFEF). 'The defendant who posted the video online received a special disqualification from working in education, sports, or recreational youth settings for four years and three months, while the others received three years and seven months,' the LaLiga statement said. The first defendant was fined €1,084 (RM5,322) and the other three €720, with additional punishments including a 1,000m restraining order from Vinicius, his home and workplace, and a ban on approaching football stadiums during LaLiga or RFEF matches. They will all be required to participate in an educational programme on equal treatment and non-discrimination in order for the prison sentences imposed to be suspended. There was no immediate confirmation from the court and no immediate reaction from Vinicius. — Reuters
