Walking my dog, I feel free to wear the most unhinged outfits

The Guardian8 hours ago
A school friend of mine once told me she wouldn't go as far as the letterbox outside her home without wearing mascara, lipstick and foundation. My mum used to blow-dry her hair to go grocery shopping.
Recently, I've seen more than one glamorous woman on TikTok warn her followers never to go to the gym without wearing makeup and a cute outfit, in case they have to interact with their weights room crush. Any time I see a friend who's recently given birth, she apologises so profusely for her dark circles and old T-shirt that you'd think she'd committed a minor commonwealth offence. I've heard about someone who puts on a full corporate outfit, including high heels, to sit at the kitchen table in her own home to work.
I despair. Where are our opportunities to look an absolute mess?
Grooming standards are a personal thing. Mine have always been minimal enough to appal every member of my immediate family: unbrushed hair, bare face, no bra. I enjoy dressing up sometimes, but my everyday vibe is more Adam Sandler going for a stroll.
Lucky for me, I've found a loophole in the social expectation of put-togetherness: dog walking fashion.

When I have my handsome shih tzu trotting by my side, I can go out in the most unhinged ensembles and nobody seems bothered. I am invisible, I am untouchable, I am immune to the judgment of others because I am out with my dog.
Let me paint you a picture. In the summer months, I might step out in a pair of fuchsia linen harem pants that my mum bought in Greece (that have a hole in the crotch), paired with a 2017 Britney Spears concert memorabilia T-shirt and knee-high, shark-print compression socks tucked into faded blue Birkenstocks that have been worn so many times they bear the dark imprint of my foot sweat. Another day, it might be striped boxer shorts, a tank top that's hanging on for dear life, and no shoes; it is my right, as an Australian, to feel the warmth of the pavement on my footsies.
When it's cold, I'll slip into something like this: pants that are, technically speaking, pyjamas, tucked into lilac ankle gumboots, an old jumper of my dad's, finished with a thigh-length raincoat buttoned in a hurry, inaccurately. Or fleece-lined track pants, a jumper with an otter on it, socks and thongs. I work from home, so often it's a case of chucking my favourite item of clothing – a second-hand coat my sister bought in 2009 that looks like a picnic rug with sleeves and has become mine by squatter's rights – over the top of whatever cosy outfit I've cobbled together that morning.

It's a grab what's near and what's comfortable situation; the less thought put into it, the better. And it's a precious chance for me to take the clothes I am not yet prepared to retire for a spin in the outside world. Stained? No problem. Threadbare? Get it on. When I am with my dog, anything goes.
Nobody blinks an eye. Nobody raises their phone ominously to film me for an Instagram round up of worst dressed strangers. I am free. I am a mess. I am just a girl walking her dog.
And I am not alone. I see you, my chaotically dressed dog-walking brethren: in pyjamas and ugg boots, in animal onesies, in long socks and sandals, short shorts, disintegrating T-shirts, charity shop jumpers. Baseball caps over unwashed hair. Muddy paw prints on your trackpants from the last wet walk. We're in this together and hey, we might not be catwalk ready, but we do have our dogs.

I'm a mum – my tips keep family day-outs cheap with an app to slash your petrol bill & you'll have cash for ice cream

SUMMER school hols need not burn a hole in your pocket. With summer activities costing around £500 per child, many families are choosing to spend time together instead - but even cute day-outs can end up costing a fortune. 2 2 Luckily, one cash-savvy mum has come to rescue with easy tips that will slash the costs - and turns out, there's even a simple way to get petrol for less when driving around. Offering a helping hand to fellow parents, mum Kelly, from Portsmouth, took to TikTok to share hacks to keep the expenses as low as possible. One of these, she recently revealed in the video, is preparing lunch and taking it with them when out and about - saving a fortune on going to a cafe or a restaurant for some grub. ''I can't tell you the last time I didn't pack a picnic and that's just because they're really expensive. ''That can whack on an extra £40 - and I don't want to spend that on food. ''The kids never ask to eat and they're used to having a backpack - and actually, if you're walking around, it doesn't restrict you, you can just eat on the go.'' The same, she added, goes for drinks as well, with the mum carrying three to four water bottles to keep the brood hydrated. As well as having their food ready, the parents also avoid popping into gift shops - unless it's someone's birthday. ''I don't buy anything from the gift shop and the kids have never wanted that because they've never known it. ''And that's probably got even easier as they've got older cause now they understand the value of money more.'' My dream pool was £40,000 so I DIYd my own 18ft version in February all for this summer heatwave - it's saved me £37,000 If your child, however, insists they do want that new overpriced toy, you should remind them of the teddy or another toy that's just now sitting in the corner. While out and about you may also want some coffee for that extra energy kick - however, with coffee shop prices higher than ever, your dose of caffeine can easily all add up. To keep the expenses as low as possible, the budget-friendly mum now carries a thermal flask with coffee which she can enjoy whenever and wherever. Where can kids eat for free this summer? THE summer holidays are here, but entertaining the kids need not cost a fortune. Here, we reveal where you can get free and cheap meals for your little ones during the 'endless' summer holidays. ASDA CAFE: Nip into an Asda cafe to feed the kids after the weekly shop. Under-16s get a hot or cold meal for £1 at any time of day. Little ones are covered, too. Kids under 18 months get a free Ella's baby food pouch with any purchase. BEEFEATER: This family-friendly pub chain makes mornings a breeze. Two kids under 16 eat for free with the purchase of an adult breakfast for £10.99. It's available from 6.30am to 10.30am midweek and 7am to 11am at weekends. BELLA ITALIA: Book a table and order an adult meal at the Italian eatery for kids aged two to 11 to get three courses and a drink for £1. Offer valid between 4pm and 6pm on Sundays to Wednesdays. On Thursdays, kids eat free all day when an adult meal is ordered from the a la carte menu. DUNELM: Make homeware shopping a fun day out. Dunelm's Pausa Cafes are offering free kids' meals for every £4 spent on their food or drink. Available all day, every day. BILL'S: Dine in at a Bill's restaurant to get up to two free kids' meals (normally £6.95 each) with an adult meal. Valid weekdays only until August 30. IKEA: Make it a food day at the Swedish home store. On every day except Fridays, enjoy a pit stop at their famous cafe from 11am to get a kids' pasta or mac and cheese dish for 95p. Other mini meals are available for £1.50. PIZZA EXPRESS: Kids up to age ten can get a free three-course Piccolo meal including dough balls, pizza or pasta and dessert with every adult meal purchased. The offer runs every day until August 11. TESCO: Pop to the supermarket cafe from Monday to Friday until August 30 for free kids' meals when an adult buys any item in the cafe. You must have a Clubcard to redeem the offer. THE RANGE: Kids under 16 get one free meal per adult main purchased at The Range cafes. Options include sandwiches, a cooked breakfast and fish and chips. All kids' meals come with a piece of fruit and a drink. ''Lastly, getting to places. I'll calculate roughly how much petrol it's going to cost me. ''I will use an app called Petrol Prices to look for the cheapest petrol station in my area. ''There can be a massive difference between the most expensive to the cheapest, so I will plan that in advance.'' She went on: ''The most I spend on a day out whilst I'm there is probably £7 on ice creams - I'll let the kids have an ice cream - but that's usually about it.'' Kelly, who posts under the username @ kellybudgetingandfamily, wrote in the caption: ''The days out themselves aren't too bad, but when you start adding drinks, food, gift shop etc it all starts to really add up and before you know it you have spent hundreds!''

EXCLUSIVE Inside the Candyman's secret love life drama as his ex Nisha breaks her silence about life in a three-way relationship with his wife - as he VANISHES from the spotlight

The 'main' polyamorous girlfriend of Travers 'Candyman' Beynon has quietly split from the tobacco tycoon, it can be revealed - as he vanishes from social media. Nisha Downes moved into the sprawling 'Candy Shop Mansion' home of married Mr Beynon - who dubbed himself the Candyman due to his gaudy, Instagram-focused lifestyle - on Queensland 's sunny Gold Coast in 2015. Now, 29, Nisha confirmed to Daily Mail Australia that she has traded in her old life of wild parties, designer shopping sprees and sex for a more conventional relationship and way of living. 'I was 19 when I moved in (to his 'Candy Shop Mansion') and when I turned 27 I wondered if [the relationship] was what I really wanted,' she admitted. 'I started thinking about my life and how long did I really want to do this for. Stuff like, 'if we did have kids would I be comfortable in that dynamic, forever?'.' This December marks three years since she farewelled the gaudy home and opulent estate in Helensvale for 'a new life'. 'Nothing hectic happened… in the end,' she said. 'I just felt being with one person would be a bit more intimate.' Still living on the Gold Coast, Nisha has traded in her string bikini for corporate attire - working as a development manager in the construction industry. Unearthed footage of her mansion 'audition' 11 years ago shows Downes, then 19, meeting Beynon and his wife for the first time, admitting she 'stalks' his social media pages and 'loves to party'. Later in the video, Ms Downes revealed that she was 'a bit obsessed' with the 47-year-old. She admits she sometimes got a bit jealous of other women in the house, including Mr Beynon's wife of a decade, Taesha. 'I respect that Taesha is Travers' wife and she respects that I'm his girlfriend,' she says. 'Looking at him, I'm like, it's so crazy to think that's my boyfriend. 'My mum was definitely concerned. She did call me and tell me she didn't want me to move in but I was just like, 'Well, you can come and see what it's all about, meet Trav and Taesha so you're more comfortable with it'. 'Then mum came up with her husband and mum's just obsessed with him, and she can see me now for months after living in Melbourne. 'I'm healthy and happy. I look better than I have before.' For more than a decade, Beynon's 'Candy Shop Mansion' has been the talk of the Gold Coast with its annual parties. Until the pandemic, he regularly hosted hundreds of guests at a time. There was the odd incident. In 2015, fireworks set off for his annual shindig sparked a brush fire across the canal, which was witnessed by a Daily Mail Australia reporter who attended the party. And in 2018, Beynon was slapped with a $13,000 council fine after complaints about a giant topless Virgin Mary statue. The flamboyant businessman certainly was not shy about sharing glimpses of his lavish lifestyle on social media with his millions of followers on social media - including stunt photos of naked women lying down covered in sushi. But Beynon has since stepped back from posting. He last shared a public update to Facebook back in April 2023, while his last TikTok post occurred in August 2019. It's apparently a similar story for the Beynon family tobacco empire, with the main FreeChoice Tobacco site also currently offline. While its franchise stores are still operating, the Gold Coast Bulletin reported that FreeChoice vacated its Gold Coast head office in February, with the space, owned by one of Beynon's companies, now leased to a new business. It comes amid what appears to be a period of upheaval for Beynon with the playboy recently having another crack at offloading his Candyland mansion. Beynon first listed the 14-bedroom canal-side property back in 2023 and, at one stage, it had an eye-watering $25million price tag attached. The Gold Coast Bulletin reported in May that Beynon had enlisted another agent to give the property the push it needs to get it over the line. He had engaged the services of agents Ivy Wu and Isaac Kim from Ivy Realty to run an expression of interest campaign for the lavish property. Travers originally purchased the home, located in the northern Gold Coast suburb of Helensvale, in 2010. He later snapped up neighbouring land, effectively tripling the footprint of the compound. The property sits on a substantial 1.4 acres with 175m of private water frontage. The house itself is set across an expansive 2,230 square-metre floorplan and boasts mosaic murals and hand-painted frescos.

A glow-down, similar to the ''clean girl aesthetic'' trend, is rooted in the idea of ''less is more''. It promotes enhancing natural beauty - rather than covering it up. With a glow-down, out are the hair extensions, fake nails and mega lashes - and in is learning how to take care of your skin to make it radiant. Before embarking on her transformation journey, the young woman was sporting mega eyelashes and bleach blonde hair extensions. Georgie, who works as a flight attendant, has also been getting Botox - however, she told her followers that it's ''staying'', despite now sporting a more natural look. Sharing the jaw-dropping makeover online, Georgia said: ''I spent so long covering myself up with blonde hair extensions, massive eyelashes. ''I almost forgot the real me.'' The clip, which has since racked up close to 17k views, also saw Georgie show fellow TikTokers what she had been hiding all these years - and the glow underneath has left people gobsmacked. Now, the young woman, who regularly shares lifestyle content on her page, looks absolutely phenomenal, rocking her real brunette hair. I was on Just Tattoo Of Us in 2019 & got the worst leg tattoos for having streaky fake tan , all I can do now is laugh In a bid to look more natural, the stunner now also doesn't hide behind faux lash extensions, which suits her ''much better'', fans said. Amazed by the makeover, over 30 social media users raced to comments where they all agreed on one thing - she had made the right choice by embracing her natural beauty. One viewer said: ''You're so pretty and every other girl on this platform, your beauty is natural and pretty everyone is different in their on way and that makes you the way you are.'' Four ways to give yourself a glowdown Thick fluffly lashes are out, so is the fake tan and long how to have the ultimate glow-down in four steps... The term "glow-down" refers to a woman removing what once was the most popular beauty choices, for a more natural look. Eyelash extensions - Thick, bold "Russian lashes" used to be all the rage, but nowadays, girls are opt for subtle, individual eyelash extensions to lengthen what they already have. Nails - Gone are the long, plastic talons, more women are favouring BIAB or gel manis. Hair colour - Remember when everyone wanted icy white hair? Not anymore! Millions of women are trying to go back to their roots (literally), and have soft blondes, and warm gold tones added to their hair, in a bid to achieve the "old money blonde" look. Makeup - Sculpting your face shape through the art of contouring is no more. Ladies are adding freckles and sweeping blush across cheekbones instead. Another chimed in: ''I love walking out of the house in no make up nowadays. ''Entered my natural "if you don't like it don't look" era a while back and I've never been happier (and I get a lie in).'' Someone else commented: ''Loved the after much better.'' ''BREATHTAKING,'' a TikToker was lost for words, as another dubbed the makeover ''a slay''. Unlock even more award-winning articles as The Sun launches brand new membership programme - Sun Club.
