Ex-AAP MLA Naresh Balyan denied bail in MCOCA case

NEW DELHI: A Delhi court on Tuesday dismissed the bail application of former AAP MLA Naresh Balyan in a case lodged under the stringent MCOCA Act.
Special Judge Dig Vijay Singh dismissed the application, saying there was no sufficient ground to grant the relief. This was the second bail application moved by Balyan in the case.
He was produced before the court through video conferencing from jail.
The Delhi Police on May 1 chargesheeted Balyan in the case.
The supplementary chargesheet was filed against four accused persons -- Sahil alias Poli, Vijay alias Kalu, Jyoti Prakash alias Baba, and Balyan -- under stringent sections of the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA).
All accused persons were arrested in the case related to an organised crime syndicate allegedly run by gangster Kapil Sangwan alias Nandu.
Balyan was arrested in the case on December 4 last year, whereas a court granted him bail in an extortion case.
The court on January 15 denied him bail in the case.
Delhi Police had argued the investigation was at a crucial stage in the case, and if granted bail, the accused would hamper the probe.

Man held for ₹30.47 cr trade benefit fraud using forged documents in Delhi: Police

New Delhi, Delhi Police has arrested a man accused of cheating and forgery to fraudulently obtain trade benefits worth over ₹30.47 crore under the Foreign Trade Policy by submitting forged remittance documents, an official said on Saturday. The accused, identified as Angad Pal Singh alias Angad Singh Chandhok, was arrested on June 2 after being deported from the United States, a police statement said. "He was earlier apprehended by the Central Bureau of Investigation in connection with another fraud case and is currently in judicial custody. "The case was initially registered in January 2017 based on a complaint from a private bank," Deputy Commissioner of Police Vikram K. Porwal said in a statement. The bank had alleged that 467 fake Foreign Inward Remittance Certificates were submitted by 18 account holders - belonging to 17 different firms - at its Naraina branch for processing export documents between September 2013 and October 2015, the officer said. He said that the FIRCs, purportedly issued by one of its branches in Delhi, were used by the accused to obtain Bank Realization Certificates , which were then submitted to the Directorate General of Foreign Trade to fraudulently avail duty credit scrips. "These duty credit scrips were intended as non-cash incentives under the Foreign Trade Policy, issued upon actual receipt of export proceeds. However, in this case, the remittances never materialised," the DCP said. Singh, along with his father Surinder Singh and brother Harsahib Singh, managed five export firms Kumar Trading Company, National Trader, Trident Overseas India, HSC Exim India, and AHC Auto Spares. Together, they allegedly forged FIRCs and obtained scrips, which were later sold in the open market, causing a loss of ₹30.47 crore to the exchequer, the DCP alleged. The accused fled India after the alleged fraud came to light but was eventually deported and taken into custody. He is also named in another EOW case. Three co-accused have already been arrested and charge-sheeted in connection with the case, police said, adding that further investigation is underway to trace the larger conspiracy and identify any collusion with bank officials.

Delhi Police nabs man in Kerala for duping retired colonel of ₹18.8 lakh in forex investment fraud

New Delhi, A 29-year-old fisherman from Kerala has been arrested by the Delhi Police for allegedly duping a retired army colonel of over ₹18.8 lakh after promising high returns from foreign exchange investments, an official said on Saturday. The accused, identified as Sreejith Rajendran, a resident of Azheekal in Kollam district of Kerala, was apprehended from his hometown, he said. The police said Sreejith, who studied till Class 10 and is a fisherman by profession, was enticed into the racket by a friend who flaunted a lavish lifestyle funded through fraudulent means. Driven by greed and a desire for easy money, he became part of the syndicate. Earlier this year, another accused, Sunil, from Jodhpur was arrested in connection with the same gang. The mastermind of the operation, Anandhu Lal from Kollam, is still at large, according to the police. "The victim, a retired Colonel, was lured into the scam in December 2023 after receiving unsolicited messages and calls from a woman who identified herself as 'Cute Arvin Anghita'. She convinced him of potential profits in the forex market and encouraged repeated investments," Deputy Commissioner of Police Harsh Indora said. Under the guise of high returns, the complainant was coaxed into transferring money in several instalments. When he sought to withdraw funds, he was told to make additional payments to process the withdrawal, he said, adding that eventually, a total of ₹18,80,818 was taken from him. A case was registered on August 31, 2024, under the relevant sections of the IPC and an investigation was launched. "During the probe, it was found that the cheated funds were routed through several bank accounts, most of which had been opened using fake addresses and mobile numbers," the officer said. One such transaction amounting to ₹5.93 lakh was traced to a bank account in Oachira, Kollam, held by the accused Sreejith Rajendran. The amount was withdrawn in cash on the same day, he said. A police team was dispatched to Kerala and the accused was nabbed from Azheekal.

Samana accident: CM assures probe into tipper-trucks misused for illegal mining

Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann on Saturday met protesting family members of the seven schoolchildren who died when their SUV was hit by a tipper-truck on the Patiala-Samana state highway and assured them of a probe into the May 8 accident. Mann said that he would order a high-level probe into the plying of overloaded tipper-trucks that were being misused for illegal sand mining. 'I've already ordered the transport and police departments to conduct a statewide drive to check the licences of truck drivers and fitness certificates of heavy vehicles. Most tipper-trucks are overloaded. I hope that the sacrifice of these children won't go in vain, and we will unearth the nexus of illegal mining,' the chief minister said. Asked about the involvement of an Aam Aadmi Party MLA in the business of tipper-trucks, Mann said no one would be spared even if he was an AAP legislator or worker for shielding the accused or interfering in the police investigation. The CM said that strict action would be taken against police officials, who delayed action in the case. Following his assurance, the family members and scores of local residents lifted their four-hour blockade near Bhakra overbridge on state highway number 10 between Patiala and Samana. They were demanding justice for the seven children and their driver, who were killed when they were returning from school and their Toyota Innova was hit by an overloaded tipper-truck a month ago. The protesters alleged laxity by the civil administration and police in arresting all accused in the case. The truck was being driven by a 19-year-old with no licence for heavy vehicles. Records showed that the truck's fitness certificate had expired in January 2024 and its pollution certificate in July 2023, while its road tax was valid up to December 2023. In addition, the Regional Transport Authority (RTA), Yamunanagar, Haryana, had issued a challan for the truck way back in December 2022. Though the driver was arrested, the parents of the children demanded that the truck owner, Randhir Singh, also be held accountable and sent behind bars. Local MLA Chetan Singh Jouramajra has also been at the receiving end of protests for his alleged association with the truck owner. He has, however, denied shielding the accused.
