Central Pattana—controlled by the Chirathivat family, among the wealthiest clans in Thailand—is spending 120 billion baht ($3.6 billion over the next five years to build new office buildings and shopping malls as the country seeks to bolster its status as a tourism hub.
The company plans to develop a new commercial district in northern Bangkok as well as 30 mixed-use real estate projects across the country from now until 2029, the Bangkok-listed Central Pattana said.
'Central Pattana aims to elevate Bangkok and Thailand to greater global standards, and plans to invest in the development of mega projects, as well as other new projects nationwide,' President and CEO Wallaya Chirathivat said in a statement.
Central Pattana—which operates Central World, the largest shopping mall in Thailand—is stepping up its expansion as the nation is set to allow casinos, a move that could further boost tourism, a key driver of the economy. The government is also seeking to bring marquee international events such as Formula One into the country.
Among the company's mega projects is The Central, a new commercial business district in Phaholyothin in northern Bangkok. Set to open in late 2026, the mall will have 460,000 square meters of retail space to be occupied by more than 200 global brands.
Central Group—which also holds interest in British retailer Selfridges—is led by Tos Chirathivat, grandson of the group's founder, Tiang Chirathivat. With a net worth of $9.9 billion, the family ranked No. 4 when Forbes Asia published the list of Thailand's 50 Richest in July 2024.

M&A News: IONQ Powers Higher After Sealing $1B Oxford Ionics Deal

Shares in quantum computing firm IonQ (IONQ) strengthened today as it snapped up British peer Oxford Ionics for $1.08 billion. Confident Investing Starts Here: Groundbreaking Tech IonQ, whose shares climbed over 3%, said the deal brings together its quantum compute, application and networking stack with Oxford Ionics' groundbreaking ion-trap technology manufactured on standard semiconductor chips. The combined technologies are expected to deliver innovative, reliable quantum computers that increase in power, scale, and problem-solving capabilities. Indeed, IonQ hopes it will accelerate innovation in drug discovery, materials science, financial modeling, logistics, chemistry, aerospace, cybersecurity and defense. The acquisition of Oxford Ionics follows IonQ's recent purchase of Lightsynq and pending acquisition of Capella. Quantum computers are faster and more efficient than their classical counterparts, performing more niche and advanced calculations, partly due to their ability to predict the results of multiple paths simultaneously and store vast amounts of data. The technology is drawing hundreds of millions of dollars in funding from technology giants such as Microsoft (MSFT) and, Alphabet's Google (GOOGL). The quantum computing market is projected to create up to $850 billion of global economic value by 2040 according to Boston Consulting Group. Drug Results Investors also got excited by results of a collaborative research program between IonQ, AstraZeneca (AZN) Amazon (AMZN) Web Services (AWS), and Nvidia (NVDA) to develop and demonstrate a quantum-accelerated computational chemistry workflow to develop drugs. IonQ said this demonstration focused on a critical step in a Suzuki-Miyaura reaction – a class of chemical transformations used for the synthesis of small molecule drugs. By integrating IonQ's Forte quantum processing unit (QPU) with the Nvidia CUDA-Q platform through Amazon Braket and AWS ParallelCluster services, the team achieved an over 20 times improvement in runtime. That means in simple terms completing the reaction in days not months. Is IONQ a Good Stock to Buy Now? On TipRanks, IONQ has a Strong Buy consensus based on 4 Buy and 1 Hold rating. Its highest price target is $50. IONQ stock's consensus price target is $40 implying a 0.15% downside.

Cumberland Council has announced additional funding to support high street regeneration and wider business growth. With funded from British taxpayers through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) and the Rural England Prosperity Fund (REPF), the money has allowed the council to extend their shop front grants programme, which helps improve the front of commercial properties in town and city centres across the region. Councillor Mark Fryer, leader of Cumberland Council, said: "The previous grants have proved to be a great success, and we urge businesses to apply for the funding. "If you have a commercial high street or town centre property which would benefit from a new look and meets the call criteria, please do get in touch. "More information on the fund, guidance notes and how to submit applications is available on our website." An additional £105,000 has been allocated for 2025-26, marking the third consecutive year of capital funding for the scheme. To date, the programme has supported upgrades to more than 100 premises and returned 11 empty units to active use. Past recipients include 16 King Street in Whitehaven and 121 Senhouse Street in Maryport. In addition to the shop front scheme, the council is working with Cumbria Business Growth Hub and Enterprising Cumbria to deliver wider business support across the region. Cumbria Business Growth Hub has been awarded £200,000 from UKSPF and £400,000 from REPF to provide grants and advice to small, micro, and medium-sized businesses. Capital grants are available for equipment, productivity improvements, premises upgrades, tourism heritage projects, and farm diversification. Revenue funding will offer vouchers for specialist consultants, as well as advice and access to workshops and programmes. Agricultural businesses will also benefit from workshops delivered in partnership with the Farmers Network. A further £200,000 in revenue funding will enable Enterprising Cumbria to expand its Accelerator programme across the region. London-listed Spectris soars 20% on fresh takeover interest from Advent

-- Shares of Spectris PLC (LON:SXS) surged by over 20% in London trading following a Bloomberg News report that private equity firm Advent is considering a takeover of the UK-based precision and testing equipment maker. The potential acquisition comes as Spectris shares had previously dropped about 18% this year, valuing the company at around £2 billion ($2.8 billion). Spectris, which employs 7,600 people across more than 30 countries, specializes in developing high-tech instruments, testing equipment, and software for various industries, including life sciences, automotive, electronics, and semiconductors. Asia is a significant market for Spectris, contributing to about 36% of its revenue last year, with Europe and North America following closely. This news of potential acquisition interest comes after a failed takeover attempt by Bain Capital and Advent International in 2018, which was abandoned amid the political uncertainties brought on by Brexit. Under the leadership of CEO Andrew Heath, Spectris has been streamlining operations since 2018, focusing on its core business in the scientific and dynamics divisions. This strategic shift followed a decline in first-quarter sales due to weakened demand in key sectors such as automotive and semiconductors. Despite the challenging market conditions, Spectris has been optimistic about mitigating the impacts of tariffs and achieving strong growth in adjusted operating profit by 2025.
