Ryan Garcia Now Has An Opportunity To Clinch A World Title In His Upcoming Bout

Yahoo24-04-2025

Ryan Garcia's a whole year-long deferral from boxing for a failed drug test elapses on May 2 when he faces Rolando "Rolly" Romero in an outdoor match at New York's Times Square.
Ryan has often come under harsh criticism for never having seized a world title during his nine-year pro boxing career. On Tuesday, the WBA declared that they've approved the WBA 'regular' welterweight title to be at stake for the Ryan Garcia vs. Rolando 'Rolly' Romero match on May 2nd. Therefore, the welterweight title bout against Rolando Romero provides an opportunity to silence detractors.

By WBA Rule C.17: 'In exceptional circumstances, the Championships Committee and the President may designate a Champion as a Super Champion; and may establish criteria for a Super Championship. The Committee and President may determine conditions and requirements of defences and retention of such title.'
Thus, if he captures the WBA 'regular' welterweight title, Ryan will have shut down that criticism eternally. Further, the win will validate his career and furnish him with credentials that have been lacking in the eyes of staunch boxing fans who pay attention to nitty-grits.
Both Rolly and his rival Ryan Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs) are rated at #2 and #3, respectively, in the WBA's rankings at welterweight. Thus, it makes sense that the World Boxing Association (WBA) will have its 'regular' crown on the line for their contest next month.
Garcia has been inactive since April 2024, when he last competed. He knocked Haney down three times to emerge victorious with a majority decision. Nonetheless, he tested positive for the prohibited substance Ostarine and was handed the deferment.

The 28-year-old Southern California native Garcia is 5-foot-8 1/2. He is also a welterweight.
Meanwhile, Romero's last fight was against Manuel Jaimes, whom he outclassed in September 2024 by decision.

Ryan considered retirement after losses to Mayer

Derby's Sandy Ryan says she considered retiring from boxing after successive defeats by Mikaela Mayer. Ryan, 31, lost her WBO welterweight world title to Mayer in controversial circumstances last September before being beaten in the rematch in March. Advertisement After two emotionally and physically draining encounters in the US, Ryan admitted she was devastated with her performance. "Mid-fight I fell asleep as in stopped reacting, stopped doing what I normally do," Ryan told BBC Radio Derby. "I remember being in the corner and my brother and [coach] Kay were like 'what's wrong?' I was in my own world. I just can't explain it. "It's not the best place to be in one of the biggest fight of your career." "After the fight, I thought I was done," she added. "I was finished boxing. And then a few weeks after, I had been back home for a while and after a few weeks the fight was still in me. I still have so much to give." Advertisement Ryan's first encounter with Mayer was marred by an unknown person throwing paint over the Englishwoman as she was leaving her hotel on fight night. Ryan described the scorecards in the first fight as "questionable" but had no complaints about the rematch, which was a unanimous points win for the American. She said camp was "mentally" tough and she suspects she carried a lot of the effects of their first dramatic fight into the rematch. "I tried to not bring it with me, but in the back of my head it was always there," she said. "I tried to be too relaxed and not be as aggressive or have that fire. But maybe when I look back, maybe I was too relaxed and not reacting to certain things which kind of made me a bit more calm. Advertisement "In the fight game, yeah it's good to be calm but I am an aggressive fighter and I needed that. "I'm giving this another shot so I need to get that fight and anger back in me, balance it out." Cyborg - What next for Ryan? Ryan shared 20 rounds with American two-weight world champion Mikaela Mayer [Getty Images] Ryan says she expects to make her return to the ring in August in the United Kingdom, with her management currently searching for an opponent. Cris Cyborg, a former UFC and PFL world champion in MMA, is one name being mentioned and Ryan asked her team to explore the possibility of making that match-up. The Brazilian has a 5-0 record in professional boxing, with her most recent bout in May. Advertisement "Her profile is big," Ryan said of Cyborg. "I saw she was calling out Claressa Shields, which is just crazy. "It would be great - I'd be happy if they made that fight. She seems very confident, but it's boxing, she wouldn't beat me." Despite her interest in Cyborg, Ryan says it is more likely she will have a tune-up fight. "I know potentially my next fight won't be a big fight. I am coming off a loss so I have to build myself up," she said. More boxing from the BBC

Popovic tells Australia to do 'something special' at World Cup

Coach Tony Popovic said Australia want to do "something special" and hailed the character of his side after they qualified for a sixth successive World Cup. The Socceroos booked their ticket to North America next year with a 2-1 win Tuesday over Saudi Arabia in Jeddah, joining Japan from Asian Group C and consigning the home team to another qualifying round. Advertisement "Very satisfying right now. I'm sure it'll sink in as the days go by," said Popovic, who joins an elite group to make a World Cup as a player and a coach. The former Crystal Palace captain appeared at the 2006 tournament in Germany, where Australia made the round of 16 under Guus Hiddink. "It's been a very intense period since I've joined, and I've loved it so far," said Popovic, who replaced Graham Arnold in September. "We've done the first part, qualifying automatically, and now the next part is to be bigger and better for the World Cup." While Australia are at a sixth straight World Cup, it is the first time in 12 years that they have qualified automatically. Advertisement Australia were fifth in the group when Popovic came in, reeling from a disastrous 1-0 loss to Bahrain and a 0-0 draw with Indonesia. After Australia conceded early in Jeddah, Mitch Duke teed up Connor Metcalfe and then scored the winner, before veteran goalkeeper Mathew Ryan saved a penalty to spark huge celebrations. "I think that's been a characteristic from the first day I arrived, we went one-nil down against China, we came back," said Popovic, referring to his first match in charge following Arnold's resignation. "To do it here in this atmosphere, you know, you gotta deal with the weather as well and it's not easy, and to show that character, resilience and then quality to come back and actually take the lead and win the game, I'm delighted. Advertisement "We've built a good foundation now and we want to really get better, kick on and try and do something special at the World Cup." For skipper Ryan it was a huge moment. He not only saved the spot kick in his 100th game for Australia, but ensured he will be at a fourth World Cup. "The fairytale has come true," said Ryan, 33, who is currently at French club Lens. "The journey that we have been on to get here, I'm just so proud of everyone. "We're going to enjoy obviously that direct qualification now. But in a week's time, or a little bit longer, the prep starts for the next goal we set ourselves." mp/pst
