Ryan Garcia's a whole year-long deferral from boxing for a failed drug test elapses on May 2 when he faces Rolando "Rolly" Romero in an outdoor match at New York's Times Square.
Ryan has often come under harsh criticism for never having seized a world title during his nine-year pro boxing career. On Tuesday, the WBA declared that they've approved the WBA 'regular' welterweight title to be at stake for the Ryan Garcia vs. Rolando 'Rolly' Romero match on May 2nd. Therefore, the welterweight title bout against Rolando Romero provides an opportunity to silence detractors.

By WBA Rule C.17: 'In exceptional circumstances, the Championships Committee and the President may designate a Champion as a Super Champion; and may establish criteria for a Super Championship. The Committee and President may determine conditions and requirements of defences and retention of such title.'
Thus, if he captures the WBA 'regular' welterweight title, Ryan will have shut down that criticism eternally. Further, the win will validate his career and furnish him with credentials that have been lacking in the eyes of staunch boxing fans who pay attention to nitty-grits.
Both Rolly and his rival Ryan Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs) are rated at #2 and #3, respectively, in the WBA's rankings at welterweight. Thus, it makes sense that the World Boxing Association (WBA) will have its 'regular' crown on the line for their contest next month.
Garcia has been inactive since April 2024, when he last competed. He knocked Haney down three times to emerge victorious with a majority decision. Nonetheless, he tested positive for the prohibited substance Ostarine and was handed the deferment.

The 28-year-old Southern California native Garcia is 5-foot-8 1/2. He is also a welterweight.
Meanwhile, Romero's last fight was against Manuel Jaimes, whom he outclassed in September 2024 by decision.
