The Pirates of Penzance review – a modern, majorly fun staging that runs out of steam
Australia has a long and affectionate relationship with The Pirates of Penzance in particular, tapping into its lively sense of social rebellion and twinkling humour with productions that seek to connect these ideas with new audiences. Now, the Hayes Theatre gets its turn. The show's director, Richard Carroll, has built a career on comic, lightly corrective and gently immersive updates of shows including Calamity Jane and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, so The Pirates of Penzance fits neatly into his body of work.
This tale, of the leader of a band of pirates who calls himself a king (since the monarchy does similar – but dirtier – work than his own); the romantic hero, Frederic, who falls in love with a woman above his social class and lacks critical thinking skills; and, of course, a 'modern' major general who knows so much about so many things (except the military), has plenty of juice left to squeeze.
Carroll's new adaptation (Victoria Falconer is the co-arranger and musical supervisor) reduces the sprawling cast to just five, each taking on major parts and then doubling, tripling or more to fill out the ensemble where required: Trevor Jones (Major General and music director), Jay Laga'aia (the pirate king), Brittanie Shipway (Ruth/Mabel), Maxwell Simon (Frederic) and Billie Palin (Isabel/Barry).

The first act of this new production is fizzing and fun. Frederic's growing deference to a guidebook for heteronormative gentlemen plays up the absurdity in Gilbert and Sullivan's piece using a modern lens: a pirate's life, where the crew share chores, meals and feelings, far from societal constraints, looks so clearly like the better option from the outset (and suggests a journey for Frederic that might end in queer liberation).
It's also a brilliant showcase for Shipway, who is extraordinary as both Ruth, Frederic's former nurse turned 'piratical maid-of-all-work', and Mabel, the major general's daughter who falls for Frederic. Shipway is the production's north star: she sets the bar for, then maintains and elevates, the energy, tone and quality of the performances from the very good ensemble: everyone must rise to meet her brilliant sense of timing, remarkably supple voice and killer joke delivery. Carroll's adaptation delivers her little love notes: a standout staging of When Frederic Was a Little Lad, which transforms Ruth's origin story into a cabaret showstopper, and a delightfully flirty Poor Wand'ring One, in which Mabel declares her interest in Frederic. Carroll's a director and adapter who loves a leading lady, and Shipway is stellar.

There are other highlights: the major general adores Sabrina Carpenter; Laga'aia gets a great fourth wall-breaking moment; Simon is wonderfully committed to Frederic's inner himbo; and there are frequent fun solutions to the lack of an ensemble (the police force are mostly hats on stands and the cast play instruments).
But, as we move into the second act, it's clear the first has made promises it just can't deliver. At one point, Frederic recites the fourth stanza of Walt Whitman's I Sing the Body Electric ('I have perceiv'd that to be with those I like is enough … '), and, while it's a lovely reading, the production doesn't build itself enough sincerity to contain this earnestness; it feels out of place.
The immersive elements of the show – including handing props to audience members and asking them to play as pirates – are swiftly corralled as though the production is afraid of any kind of risk; when an audience member who is asked to voice agreement adds a comment, the cast ignores it and it feels against the spirit of the production's own offering. There are props, ideas and comic bits that are discarded as soon as they arrive – every one a little ding to the production's own interior comic rhythm and narrative logic. Ultimately, it feels as though the show runs out of steam well before it's over.
It's hard not to feel sympathetic about it: musicals might be the theatrical form in which it's hardest to stick the landing, especially when you're also trying to ensure that no one is giving away women like property (thankfully) and that the happy ending represents a more contemporary social rebellion. But that first act, all promise and new premise, is a ball, and the goodwill it engenders there – and the reliable dazzling presence of Shipway, the star of this show – makes a good case for sticking around after interval.
The Pirates of Penzance is on at Hayes Theatre, Sydney until 16 March, then Illawarra Performing Arts Centre 26-29 March and Canberra Theatre Centre 2-6 April

‘I'm a shopping writer and these are the holiday clothes I'd buy for under £30'
From comfy denim shorts to a shell print dress, here are my top picks As a fashion writer it's my day job to scour the high street for the best clothing buys, finding everything from the denim shorts with the most flattering fit to comfy yet chic wedding guest dresses. Knowing what to buy for a holiday can be tricky, especially if you have limited space in your suitcase, plus the cost of a new holiday haul can add up. Since I shop for a living, I've rounded up some of my favourite buys that I'd snap up if I was jetting off somewhere sunny soon rather than getting caught in downpours in good old Blighty. Is that Ibiza I hear calling my name? From pretty warm weather dresses to practical yet stylish summer shoes and bags, I've compiled a list of my favourite high street finds. The best bit? They all cost £30 or less. Boden Belle Broderie Sleeve Top - £22 (originally £44) Boden's Belle Broderie Sleeve Top is now 50% off and is a great basic to take in your holiday suitcase. It's essentially a staple white top that'll go with all manner of pieces from denim shorts to maxi skirts, but the frill sleeves give it a dressier feel than your standard vest or tee. One Boden shopper who purchased the top said: "Beautiful colour, great design - nice bit of fabric under the sleeve to ensure your bra isn't on show! Nice touch - cleverly thought out." One reviewer did have reservations about the top's shoulder detail, writing: "I loved the colour, but unfortunately the shoulders were just too wide and looked odd so I had to return." The top, which is also available in four other colours, is super versatile and its 100% cotton material means it'll be breathable in the heat. New Look Navy Shell Print Satin V-Neck Midi Dress - £22 (originally £37) You can't go wrong with shell and lobster print which are huge news this summer. As a neutral girl I tend to steer clear of anything too bright, so I love that this New Look Navy Shell Print Satin V-Neck Midi Dress comes in a darker hue. The Dress is perfect for summer evenings thanks to the figure skimming fit and flutter sleeves that add a feminine touch. I'd style the dress with a straw clutch bag and some strappy sandals. Whilst I really love the design of this dress, I reckon that the cut on the bust area may come up small if you have a fuller bust. That being said, I like that the dress has small sleeves which is handy if you're conscious of your arms. Marks and Spencer Woven Top Handle Shopper - £25 M&S do an amazing selection of bags, and this woven top handle shopper works great for holidays thanks to its roomy interior and beachy straw-like material. It's also available in pink if you fancy adding a pop of colour to your wardrobe, but personally I like that the neutral hue goes with anything. One shopper who purchased the bag from M&S said: "Excellent bag. Good quality, comfortable strap, very pleased." Another did mention they'd found the bag a little irritating to use, writing: "Ok bag for the price. A little too big for me and has an inside cotton bag that is not fixed, so slips around and needs sewing in." Despite this, I think it's a good all-rounder for summer, especially if you've only got room in your suitcase for one bag. H&M White Linen Shirt - £28 A linen shirt is a summer staple and will work harder than most other things in your wardrobe. Wear it buttoned up with denim shorts for a day out exploring, or wear it over a bikini as a cover-up, the possibilities are endless. This white Linen Shirt from H&M is made from 100% linen meaning it'll be breathable in sticky weather. One customer who purchased the shirt did say as part of their review: "The fabric does have a slightly stiff/scratchy feel but hoping it softens up with wear and washing. I'm also hoping it doesn't shrink when I wash it!" Despite this, the shirt has a 4.7 average star rating out of a possible five on H&M's website. One happy purchaser said 'This is the best linen shirt I have ever owned.' ASOS Design Soft Denim Pull On Short - £22 These ASOS Design soft pull on shorts are a great alternative for when it's too warm to wear rigid denim. Thanks to the lightweight material, these shorts give the same vibe as their more structured denim counterparts but are much comfier. The shorts, which are available in UK sizes 10-18, can also be purchased with a matching top for £24, giving you a co-ord that can also be worn as separates when teamed with other items in your wardrobe. The only drawback I can see with these denim shorts is that they don't seem to have a drawstring detail at the front, only a stretch panel at the back. Next High Neck Essential Shaping Swimsuit - £18 Next's High Neck Essential Shaping Swimsuit is available in a staple black colour or a blue patterned print. The classic design looks chic and shoppers love the costume as it comes in both regular and petite sizes. One said: "Excellent quality and brilliant to be able to buy a petite costume. Please could you do it in other colours." One thing to note is that one customer felt the material was 'see-through' whilst another said it was 'too thin.' Despite this, a different customer was pleased with the fit and price tag, writing: "Fits perfect and the material looks great, definitely recommend. The price is affordable." PLT Square Toe Thong Flat Sandals - £16 A staple pair of black sandals will see you through many a holiday look and the gold toned detail on these Square Toe Thong Sandals adds a chic touch. The sandals are available in UK shoe sizes 3-8 and also come in white. One slight drawback I can see with these shoes is that the thong toe could potentially be a little uncomfortable for those who aren't used to it, but I love the barely-there design. Mango Draped Shirt Dress - £23 (originally £50) Ideal for a city break or beach holiday evenings, this Mango Draped Shirt Dress features a flattering draped detail that gives it a figure-hugging shape without being uncomfortable. I'd keep the look simple and team this gorgeous dress with white shoes and a straw bag. Whilst I love the cut of this dress, if you're fuller busted I think it could mean the dress may gape at the chest if you want it cinched round the waist. However, I do think the dress is a classic and won't date, meaning you could dig it out year after year. Amazon Reoria Thong Bodysuit - £20 There's little worse than wearing a bra during sweaty weather so I love this Amazon Reoria Bodysuit for warmer wdays. It has a thong detail so it won't give a VPL and it has a double lined fabric which makes it supportive. I've tried Reoria bodysuits before and can vouch for their quality. It's currently available in five colours. One shopper said however, that they found the bodysuit 'runs a tad small' though another described it as 'waist smoothing.' I love that the bodysuit can be styled with skirts, shorts, and trousers for maximum wear. New Look Pink Fruit Print Frill Trim Midi Dress - £20 (originally £35) In case you hadn't guessed, I tend to stick to neutral pieces on holiday, but if you like a pop of colour then the fruit print on this Pink Fruit Print Frill Trim Midi Dress from New Look makes it a really fun option. Whether you're hitting up the all inclusive buffet or exploring the local bars, this on-sale dress has been described by one shopper on New Look's website as: "A lovely dress, it's stunning on." Whilst the leg slit may be annoying for some, I like that the dress has an elasticated rear waist for extra comfort.

Peter previously told The Sun: "When I read the script, I spent the whole time laughing. Gavin and Stacey reveals plans for James Corden and Ruth Jones' new TV show
What's occurin'? Well if you read on you can find out all about a new TV project from Gavin and Stacey writers James Corden and Ruth Jones as they reunite for a new project Mathew Horne has revealed Gavin & Stacey creators James Corden and Ruth Jones are already working on a new TV project. The duo have said they hoped to work together again after their hit BBC sitcom, but Mathew's revelation means work has already begun. Mathew also said he is hoping for his own mini reunion on stage, as he and actor TV host James have discussed teaming up for a theatre project in 2026. It comes after ITV fans accuse Alan Titchmarsh of 'ruining' garden as foster parents were left sobbing. Helen Skelton and Gethin Jones split as he joins a notorious dating app on a lads' holiday Taylor Swift sparks engagement rumours as fans spot Travis Kelce's lock screen Asked 'Will you work with any of the Gavin & Stacey stars again?', Mathew replied: 'I would love to work with James and Ruth again. In fact James and I have been discussing doing a play because we are both going back into the theatre for a while – but not in the same play. James and I have been talking about doing a play, maybe next year or maybe the year after that. "And as for Ruth, she is writing her novels at the moment. And she has written a new novel (By Your Side) and it is all set on a fictional island in Scotland and my heritage is Scottish, I am actually mostly Scottish by blood. So I am hoping to get into something because a lot of her novels are going to be turned into TV stuff so I'd like to work with her on that level. 'And I know they are doing something with Apple at the moment, they are writing something for Apple. So I think my working relationship with both of them will continue but it may not be imminent but I think we definitely will come back together so that will be really exciting and I would jump at the chance to do that.' A source close to James Corden confirmed he was working on writing new projects with Ruth but said as well as Apple, a number of TV channels and streamers were keen to screen whatever they come up with. It is thought the most likely next series for them could be a comedy drama, as any sitcom would risk direct comparisons with Gavin & Stacey. Speaking in May at the BAFTAs, Ruth had said she wanted to make more TV with her friend and co-star. Ruth said: "I love working with James Corden, I really do, and I hope that we will carry on working together.' Actor Mathew, speaking at a talk he gave in Taunton on Thursday night, also said he was proud to have Gavin & Stacey on his CV and he didn't think there would be a Christmas audience ever again like the 22 million they managed last year in 2024 with the consolidated audience figure. The 90 minute special resolved the cliff hanger from five years before, when Nessa (Ruth Jones) asked Smithy (James Corden) to marry her. Mat, 46, explained: "It is already in the record books with 22 million people watching the show. To be an actor and have that on your CV…. even if my acting career is over and I hope it's not… I have done that! "That is on my CV and I have a lot of friends who are actors and they have gone through their careers without ever doing anything that their parents would be proud of or that their parents enjoyed watching. And I have got that in Gavin and Stacey. "Time will tell whether in 10, 15, 20 years and long, long after I have gone people will still be watching it. Gavin and Stacey is the best representation of love, friendship and family that I can think of. And I genuinely believe that is what is at the heart of the show - and as human beings, I believe, that is what gives us our meaning and that is what we are searching for. "The show does bring families together and going back to that finale at Christmas, maybe three or four generations of families sat in their living rooms and watched it on Christmas Day. The TV landscape at the moment is really up in the air because people watched television in different ways, on their phones, on laptops and they're pausing it and rewinding it. "So that idea of a whole family watching the same programme on the same day and in the same room.. I don't think this is ever going to happen again. I think that is the power of Gavin and Stacey as a show. It brings families together and it brings people together and all generations together." Officially Gavin & Stacey: The Finale is the UK's most-watched scripted show across all broadcasters and streamers since current records began in 2002, with ratings already at 19.3 million according to the latest data.
