I tested Meta Voice vs Gemini Live using 5 prompts — here's who won
Voice assistants are having a moment. Meta recently rolled out its new voice-powered Meta AI in a standalone app, while Google's Gemini Live now lets you have full back-and-forth conversations with the chatbot via Android or iOS. Both are designed to be natural, helpful and available in real time. But how do they actually stack up?
To find out, I ran both Meta AI and Gemini Live through the same five real-life prompts right on my iPhone.
No typing, just me talking to the bots the way I talk to a friend when I'm hungry, frazzled or in desperate need of entertainment for my kids.
I judged them on speed, usefulness, follow-up ability and personality. Here's how each one performed.
Prompt: 'I have chicken and spinach — what should I make for dinner?'
Meta offered me a variety of options immediately, each of varying difficulty. The bot then asked me what I was in the mood for. From there, I said the pasta sounded good and it gave me the recipe.Gemini Live started with one idea only. Rather than giving me a variety of options to choose from, it asked me if I had any pasta on hand. When I said yes, but asked for something else, it offered a few options.Winner: Meta wins for coming up with the most ideas from the start rather than making me ask for more.
Prompt: 'What's a fun and inexpensive way to celebrate the end of the school year?'
Meta suggested a potluck picnic but also included a few other different activities to help me decide on the best choice.Gemini Live also suggested a potluck and suggested 'everyone bring a dish,' which is basically the definition of a potluck. It did not elaborate on any other activities.Winner: Meta wins for once again offering more ideas upfront rather than stopping at the first suggestion.
Prompt: 'Can you give me a list of summer reading books? I'm a fan of Emily Henry.'
Meta struggled with this and kept interrupting me. It kept saying 'Happy to help!' as I was talking. It suggested all of Emily Henry's books, which, as a fan of hers, I've already read. Finally, after a bit of prompting and a ton of pauses, I got a few suggestions.
Gemini Live was equally bad. I told the bot I have read everything by the author Emily Henry and it immediately suggested one of her books. When prompted again, it suggested a few books by authors with a similar style.Winner: Meta wins by a hair. While both bots did not answer my prompt immediately, Meta at least came up with several better suggestions by the end of the conversation.
Prompt: 'Can you tell me the top 5 news stories happening right now?'
Meta immediately mentioned the breaking news story at the bottom of my computer screen and went into detail about it and other important news of the day.Gemini Live gave a brief overview of the news but didn't even mention the breaking news. It also did not dive as deep into the current news happening at the moment.Winner: Meta wins for a more thorough and accurate dive into breaking news.
Prompt: 'Tell me a joke that's appropriate for work.'
Meta absolutely fell flat here. Nothing it said was funny or even a joke. One was just sad.Gemini Live was basically an office comedian ready to give me joke after joke. They were corny, sure, but funny enough for an office setting.Winner: Gemini Live wins for better humor and understanding the assignment.
In the end, Meta Voice edged out Gemini Live, winning four out of five categories with stronger suggestions, faster follow-up and better real-time awareness.
While Gemini delivered in the humor department (and still holds promise as a polished assistant backed by Google's ecosystem), it often required more prompting to get where I needed it to go.
If you're looking for a voice assistant that jumps in with useful ideas without making you work for them, Meta is currently the better companion — even if its jokes could use a little work.
While neither chatbot has much of a personality, they are both smart and responsive. Meta AI might be too responsive. Even if you close the app, the bot continues to talk, ready for another prompt.

After years in his dad's shadow, Kiyan Anthony charts his own path to Syracuse while strengthening family bond
Kiyan Anthony has had eyeballs on him for years, being a top NBA prospect throughout high school. But that number has always been multiplied, given who his father is. His dad is soon-to-be Hall of Famer Carmelo Anthony, a 10-time All-Star and widely regarded as one of the best pure scorers in basketball history. Kiyan, like his dad, is going to play college basketball at Syracuse, in his own words, for two years "max." And now that his dad's playing days are over, Carmelo is "more hands on deck." "I wouldn't say we're closer (than when he was playing). I would just say he's more like more hands on deck, more foot on ground. So just him being there at my games, him being there, me able to go to his house and just spend a day with him, I feel like that was some stuff that we were missing while he was traveling, while he was in the league," Kiyan said in a recent interview with Fox News Digital. "So me being able to spend more time with him off the court and him investing all his time into me on the court, whether it's working out, and him coming to my games, I feel like that's what's bought us closer about our bonding, our connection was always there, but it just kind of got stronger and it kind of grew." Some father-son bonding came in a collaboration with Meta, where the duo filmed an episode of "Close Friends Only" to celebrate Father's Day, where they talked about their relationship, basketball, and regular dad-to-son talking points. "Being able to collab with Meta and Instagram and show our other side off the court, just showing our personality and the bond that me and my dad have, I feel like that was a great outlet to do so. And it was really fun working with them. And I feel like that's why we did it," Kiyan said. "People see him all the time at my games on the sideline, but never really see, like, our real connection off the court. So, I feel like doing these collaborations and these interviews and these podcasts, it gives us another chance to really show the fans like the type of bond that we're building and the type of connection we have." Kiyan admitted that there used to be some "pressure" to live up to the hype, especially with his bloodline. But at the end of the day, his NBA dreams are his, not his dad's. "To be honest, early in my career, I wasn't even that good at basketball. So just having a lot of opinions and people saying I'm not that good and my dad not being there because he was still in the league, just me trying to handle it by myself," Kiyan said. "But as I started getting better, as I kept working, people started to kind of take my side, so now I got a lot of fans. Obviously, it's a lot of haters out there, a lot of mixed opinions, but, you know, I'm just driving, and I look forward to every game, having a big fan base there. I know everywhere I go, there's going to be a lot of eyes on me. So I just try to present myself in the best way possible every time I step out." "My dad was never the type of person to force me on that I had to play basketball, that I had to do what he did. So he kind of just let me rock and kind of let me make my own decisions, but it just so happened that this is what I wanted to do, and this is what I fell in love with," he continued. "So now I have the chance in following his footsteps to go to his school, hopefully win some games. Obviously, the NBA is the main goal, but whether I go to school for one year or two years, it's always going to be there. So just trying to better every day. This is what I want to do. I had a long talk with my dad about that the other day, I was actually just telling him, like, this is what I want to do, and I'm super locked in." The first step to living up to the Anthony name is starring for the Orange, where Melo won a championship in 2003. It's been up and down for Syracuse in recent years, but the younger Anthony is ready to bring back the glory days. "My dad won a national championship. Obviously, that's the main goal, but even if I go in there and win some games, make it to the tournament, win a couple games in the tournament, I feel like that's a huge success, because the past couple years, they've been off the grid," Kiyan admitted. "They haven't been making a tournament. They haven't been winning a lot of games in conference. So, I'll just try to go in there and really just bring the fan base back, bring what Syracuse is about, and everybody knows what it's about. They just haven't had the success these past few years." These New Pixel 10 Features Will Challenge The Competition
The new Pixel 9 With the launch of Android 16, many expect the first smartphones to ship with the latest version of the OS will be Google's Pixel 10 and Pixel 10 Pro. While the focus will no doubt be placed on both the new capabilities of Android and the increased application of artificial intelligence, some huge hardware changes should not go unnoticed. The changes focus on the camera. It's already clear that Google is adding a telephoto lens to the Pixel 10; the Pixel 9's wide-angle and ultrawide-angle lens will be joined by a telephoto lens. This isn't a direct addition… the Pixel 9's with the 50 megapixel wide and 48 megapixel ultrawide will be bumped down to a 48 megapixel wide and 13 megapixel ultrawide pairing (a pairing that matches that of the Pixel 9a). Nevertheless, the telephoto will be welcome both in use and by the marketing team. The camera system is expected to feature gimbal-like stabilization across the entire Pixel 10 family. Using a mix of optical image stabilization, software-based electronic image stabilization, and AI algorithms, the Pixel 10 camera system should allow for sharper images thanks to the steadying influence of the hardware compensating for dynamic movement while the phone's camera is being used. The Pixel 10 has a critical role to play in the smartphone ecosystem. As the entry-level Pixel smartphone, it will challenge the current 'flagship-killer' handsets in price and capability. With it, Google will be looking to set the standard that consumers should expect at this price point. While the Pixel range plays a part in defining what it means to be a smartphone—be it a flagship, a foldable, or the base function of a phone—the Pixel 10 will arguably be the Pixel that can have the most significant impact on the ecosystem. Adding a telephoto lens and image stabilisation sets another marker for the competition. Whether it is a justification for a decision already made in their design process, or a push to include these elements in the next phone, the Pixel 10 represents Google's image of what a smartphone should be.
