Varanasi: The court of ADJ (MP-MLA) on Tuesday fixed Jun 21 as next date for hearing the appeal of disqualified MLA Abbas Ansari against his sentencing in the hate speech case by chief judicial magistrate (MP-MLA) court.
The awarding of a two-year imprisonment by the CJM (MP-MLA) court on May 31 led to termination of Abbas's membership from state assembly.
Ansari's advocate, Daroga Singh, said with beginning of the hearing before ADJ (MP-MLA) Rajiv Vatsa, district govt council (criminal) received copy of the appeal and sought time to file objection, after which, court fixed Jun 21 as next date for hearing, he added. Ansari was sentenced in a case lodged against him on Mar 4, 2022, after his speech delivered at a meeting in the Paharpur area on Mar 3, 2022, went viral on social media.
While contesting the 2022 assembly polls from Mau Sadar seat as Samajwadi Party-Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party alliance candidate, Ansari, in his Paharpur speech on Mar 3, 2022, had said, "After formation of SP-led govt, officials would have to give 'hisab-kitab' (account) of their work of the past regime before getting transferred."
Ansari won the election, but went behind bars following his arrest by the Prayagraj unit of enforcement directorate in a money laundering case in Feb 2023. He came out of jail in Mar. With completion of hearing in the 2022 hate speech case at the CJM (MP-MLA) court, Ansari was awarded two years imprisonment, after which he lost membership of the assembly.
Against the CJM court's decision, Ansari moved his appeal before the sessions court on Monday. The session court transferred the case to the court of ADJ (MP-MLA) Rajiv Vats, where the initial hearing took place on Tuesday.

Pothole-free roads, metro boost: Shinde outlines MahaYuti's Mumbai plan

In a veiled attack on Shiv Sena-UBT, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said that "some treated Mumbai as a golden goose" and forced people to travel through potholed and congested roads, which will be a key issue in the upcoming local bodies elections in the state. In a video interview with PTI, Shinde said he and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis were busy giving Mumbai an image makeover, and the financial capital of the nation will get "pothole-free roads" and better sanitation facilities in the next 18 months. He also asserted that the BJP-Shiv Sena-NCP MahaYuti alliance will contest the upcoming local bodies elections together and expressed confidence about emerging victorious. "We contested the Lok Sabha elections together and won. The BJP-Shiv Sena-NCP MahaYuti won the Maharashtra elections. We will win the local bodies elections as MahaYuti alliance," Shinde said. The rapid development of infrastructure across the state and particularly in Mumbai and suburban areas will be a key election issue, Shinde said. "Some people treated Mumbai as the golden goose... people were forced to travel through potholes, there were several accidents," he said. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has an annual budget of nearly Rs 75,000 crore, which is more than that of some small states. The undivided Shiv Sena has ruled the BMC since 1992. Shinde split the Shiv Sena in 2022 and toppled Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray's Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government, formed by Sena-NCP and Congress. He claimed support of more than two-thirds of Sena legislators and was recognised as the 'real Shiv Sena' by the Election Commission. The BMC elections, likely to be held later this year, are expected to witness a tussle between Thackeray and Shinde to prove their supremacy in the state capital. "I will only say that the decisions for the betterment of Mumbai and Maharashtra taken during my two-and-a-half-year tenure as chief minister, along with Devendra Fadnavis, will deliver results," Shinde said. "People want results, and they support those who deliver and not those who sit at home. We have seen this in assembly elections and will see it again in local body elections," he said. The deputy chief minister said road concretisation was in full swing in Mumbai, and the city will be pothole-free within one and a half years. "We've also started seven sewage treatment plants to stop polluted water from entering the sea, something that should have been done 20 years ago," Shinde said. He hit out at the Thackeray-led MVA government for "stalling" development projects such as the Mumbai Metro and the car-shed work, causing hardships to the people. "We've restarted all of them. Mumbai's metro network will soon reach 350400 km. We're aiming for last-mile, end-to-end connectivity in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region," Shinde said. He said the "Balasaheb Thackeray Aapla Dawakhana" (neighbourhood clinics) have been functioning across several locations in Mumbai that ensure free medical checkups and medicines for the poor in slum areas. "Long-pending housing projects under the slum rehabilitation scheme have now begun. We aim to bring back people who were forced out of Mumbai to suburbs such as Vasai-Virar, Kalyan-Dombivli, and Badlapur," Shinde added. Pawar Alleges Offer To Fix 160 Assembly Seats, Fadnavis Rubbishes Claim

NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar on Saturday claimed that ahead of last year's Maharashtra Assembly elections, two individuals approached him with a 'guarantee' to secure victory in 160 out of the 288 seats in the state. 'I was surprised. I ignored those two people. During that time, I had no suspicion about the Election Commission. I arranged their meeting with Rahul Gandhi. After that, whatever those people wanted to say, they said to Rahul Gandhi. However, Rahul Gandhi and I thought that we should not pay attention to them. This is not our path. We decided that we will go to the people and seek the mandate during the assembly elections,' Pawar said. Pawar made these revelations at a press conference held here in the presence of state party chief Shashikant Shinde, former home ministers Anil Deshmukh and Jitendra Awhad, state general secretary Rohit Pawar, among others. He claimed that those two people had told him about manipulating votes in 160 seats. He reiterated that he did not pay attention to this; instead will seek people's mandate directly. Pawar supported Rahul Gandhi's move to raise various issues, including vote theft and rigging in the elections. 'There should be a thorough investigation into the allegations made by Rahul Gandhi, and we want an answer from the Election Commission, not from the BJP,' added Pawar. Awhad corroborated Pawar's account, saying that two people had gone to meet party chief Sharad Pawar and offered him about the manipulation of votes in 160 seats. However, the party chief did not pay attention to them, saying that this could not happen. However, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis rejected the claims outright. He said, 'I don't understand one thing. Why did Pawar Saheb remember all this only after meeting Rahul Gandhi, and that too after so many days?' 'Sharad Pawar didn't say anything for so long, but today he suddenly made this statement. Just like Rahul Gandhi, who is telling imaginary stories every day, is Pawar Saheb doing the same ?' he taunted. He further stated, 'Even if opponents create confusion, elections in India are held in a free and fair manner. They make accusations about EVMs and the election process in public, but when called by the Election Commission, they don't turn up. They are not ready to give an affidavit. They say they have taken an oath in Parliament. But does the oath in Parliament work in the Supreme Court or in the high courts? They know that if caught lying, they could face criminal action. So they just lie every day and run away."

Congress Claims Credit For Bengaluru Metro Yellow Line, Set To Be Inaugurated By PM Tomorrow

Bengaluru: Bengaluru's much-awaited Metro Yellow Line is set to be inaugurated tomorrow by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. But before the event, the political battle over credit for the project has heated up, with Karnataka Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy launching a sharp counter to BJP claims and releasing documents to show the contribution of the state government for the Yellow Line project. Mr Reddy accused BJP leaders, including BY Vijayendra and Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya, of projecting the entire Metro project as the Centre's achievement while sidelining the state's contributions. He reminded them of the project's origins dating back to 2006 when then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh laid the foundation stone under the Congress-led Dharam Singh government in Karnataka and asserted that "the Metro belongs to the people, not any one party." The minister released documents and detailed funding patterns across the three phases, stressing that the Karnataka government has been the major partner, often contributing as much or more than the Centre. Through the documents he shared with the media, he claimed that In Phase 1, the state contributed 30 per cent (including land), the Centre 25 per cent, with the rest borrowed. In Phase 2, the Centre's share dropped to 20 per cent, with the state covering cost overruns and providing land. Phase 3 sees the state putting up 20 per cent plus all land and rehabilitation costs, again with the Centre at 20 per cent. Mr Reddy said the state has given guarantees for all BMRCL loans, which means the states' taxpayers are liable if repayments falter. He questioned why BJP MPs were undermining their own state and ignoring the state's financial role. Taking on Mr Surya's claim that only 6 km of Metro was built under Congress, Mr Reddy said Phase 1 included 42 km planned under Congress rule. The project's costs rose from an initial Rs 6,395 crore estimate to Rs 14,405 crore, with the state ultimately contributing Rs 24,064.30 crore versus the Centre's Rs 17,803.85 crore. He accused the BJP-led Centre of withholding Rs 11,495 crore allocated by the 15th Finance Commission for projects like the Peripheral Ring Road and lake development, while state MPs remain silent in parliament. Mr Reddy blamed the Centre for delays in the Yellow Line, citing late environmental clearances, coach deliveries, and safety certificates all under central jurisdiction. "Since Congress is in power in Karnataka, they deliberately delayed approvals and then blamed us," he alleged. On BJP leaders' claims of resolving technical and land acquisition issues, Mr Reddy dismissed them as "state responsibilities," except in cases where land belongs to the Centre or Defence Ministry. He also reiterated that fare hikes are decided by a central committee, not the state. With both parties locked in a war of words, Sunday's inauguration is shaping up to be a politically charged event , another reminder that in Bengaluru's infrastructure story, politics often travels as fast as the Metro itself.
