Operational, regulatory, weather factors drive recent Air India disruptions: Spokesperson
New Delhi [India], June 18 (ANI): Amid a spate of flight disruptions, Air India has clarified that a mix of operational, regulatory, and environmental challenges--not just technical issues--are behind the recent cancellations and delays across its domestic and international network.
In an official update issued on June 18, the airline detailed the status of several affected flights over the past 48 hours, citing causes ranging from inclement weather to regulatory crew duty norms and environmental hazards.
According to the airline spokesperson, AI2491 from Mumbai to Lucknow, scheduled for June 17, was cancelled due to a cascading impact of flight diversions triggered by heavy rains in Delhi. The resulting delays led to the operating crew exceeding the permissible Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL), forcing a cancellation on operational grounds.
Similarly, AI160 from London to Ahmedabad, also on June 17, was rescheduled due to a combination of FDTL constraints and restrictions on night operations at Ahmedabad airport. Passengers were informed that a revised schedule would be communicated shortly.
On June 18, AI188 from Toronto to Delhi was cancelled due to extended maintenance work, which again caused the crew to fall outside permissible duty hours. Passengers had already boarded but were safely disembarked, the airline said.
AI996 from Dubai to Delhi, also scheduled for June 18, was the only flight in the update confirmed to have been cancelled due to a technical issue. Passengers on board were disembarked before departure.
Meanwhile, AI2145 from Delhi to Bali was forced to return mid-flight due to reports of volcanic activity near the destination airport. 'The decision to air return was taken purely in the interest of safety,' the spokesperson noted, adding that the aircraft landed safely back in Delhi and all passengers were deboarded without incident.
Air India acknowledged the inconvenience caused and assured that ground staff are actively working to make alternate travel arrangements for affected passengers. 'Full refunds or complimentary rescheduling options have been offered,' the spokesperson said.
The airline also advised that due to ongoing enhanced aircraft inspections, continuing weather disturbances, and airspace restrictions, further disruptions may occur. Passengers have been urged to check real-time flight updates via the airline's website or customer care numbers. (ANI)

Air India to suspend services to Washington, DC from September 1
New Delhi [India], August 11 (ANI): Air India on Monday announced the suspension of its services between Delhi and Washington DC, effective September 1, due to a combination of operational factors, to ensure the reliability and integrity of the airline's overall route network. The suspension is primarily driven by the planned shortfall in Air India's fleet, as the airline commenced retrofitting 26 of its Boeing 787-8 aircraft last month. This extensive retrofit programme, aimed at significantly enhancing customer experience, necessitates a prolonged unavailability of multiple aircraft at any given time until at least the end of 2026. That, coupled with the continued closure of airspace over Pakistan, impacts the airline's long-haul operations, leading to longer flight routings and increased operational complexity. Customers with Air India bookings to or from Washington, DC, beyond September 1, 2025, will be contacted and offered alternative travel arrangements, including rebooking on other flights or full refunds, as per their individual preferences. Air India customers will continue to have the options of one-stop flights to Washington DC via four US gateways - New York (JFK), Newark (EWR), Chicago, and San Francisco - with the airlines interline partners, Alaska Airlines, United Airlines, and Delta Air Lines, allowing customers to travel on a single itinerary with their baggage checked through to the final destination. Air India will continue to operate non-stop flights between India and six destinations in North America, including Toronto and Vancouver in Canada. (ANI)

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], August 4 (ANI): Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Mumbai recorded over 13.6 million passengers in the April-June quarter of 2025-26, registering growth despite challenging circumstances in the global aviation industry. On a year-on-year basis, the passenger growth saw a 1.1 per cent uptick. The quarter also recorded the highest single-day passenger traffic for the quarter on May 30, 2025, with 161,603 passengers. 'Despite disruptions such as regional airspace restrictions, geopolitical conditions, temporary airspace closures in the Middle East, and a momentary dip in passenger sentiment stemming from recent aviation incidents, CSMIA sustained operational momentum and continued to uphold its role as one of India's premier international gateways,' according to a statement from CSMIA. CSMIA said it efficiently facilitated 82,369 Air Traffic Movements (ATMs) during the quarter, marking a 1.3 per cent increase over the same quarter of 2024-25. During the quarter, International ATMs recorded a growth of 3.3 per cent. The busiest day of the quarter was April 30, 2025, with the airport handling 989 ATMs in a single day, the CSMIA statement said. The top domestic destinations from CSMIA were Delhi, Bengaluru, and Kolkata, while the leading international destinations included Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and London. In terms of the first port of departure on international travel regions, the Middle East accounted for the highest share at 48 per cent, followed by the Asia-Pacific region at 30 per cent and Europe at 14 per cent. CSMIA broadened its airline partner base of international carriers by welcoming Air Astana and Royal Jordanian Airlines, which commenced operations in April and June 2025, respectively, connecting Mumbai with destinations in the Middle East and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) region. Apart from introducing connectivity to Amman and Almaty, CSMIA further strengthened its network connecting Fujairah and new domestic connections to Porbandar, Gaya, and Amravati. In line with CSMIA's Digital First Philosophy, CSMIA unveiled its next-generation Airport Operations Control Centre (AOCC) during this quarter. Key Digital enhancements also included wider integration of DigiYatra, deployment of digitally enabled e-gates, self-check-in kiosks and self-baggage drop facilities. Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) is a joint venture between Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL) and Airports Authority of India (AAI), with AAHL holding a 74 per cent stake. CSMIA, with a rich history of over 90 years, is spread over 1,900 acres and holds the distinction of being India's second busiest airport in terms of passenger traffic, managing 55.12 million passengers in 2024-25. Australia launches $130 million global campaign to boost tourism
Canberra [Australia], August 4 (ANI): The Australian Government will soon launch a new $130 million campaign aimed at encouraging international travellers to plan and book an Australian holiday. First seen in a teaser campaign launched by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese during his recent visit to China, the second chapter of Tourism Australia's successful Come and Say G'day campaign will go live in China on August 7. The new advertising creative will progressively roll out in other key international markets before the end of the year. In the new TV and online video advertisements, brand ambassador Ruby the Roo will be joined by talent well-known to audiences in the United States, United Kingdom, China, India, and Japan. Australian wildlife conservationist Robert Irwin will feature in the campaign in the US, food writer and TV cook Nigella Lawson in the UK, actor Yosh Yu in China, wellness advocate Sara Tendulkar in India, and comedian Abareru-kun in Japan. Australian actor Thomas Weatherall will also feature in the new advertising creative. The second chapter of Come and Say G'day builds on the global campaign which launched in October 2022. In that time, the warm and welcoming creative featuring Ruby the Roo has increased consideration for an Australian holiday. The Australian tourism industry has been growing since the resumption of global travel. The number of international arrivals is expected to reach a record 10 million in 2026, growing to 11.8 million in 2029. This campaign, which will run for the next two years, will take the total investment by the Federal Government in Come and Say G'day to $255 million since 2022. For every dollar the Government invests in tourism attraction, there is a $14 return, which helps support more than 700,000 jobs and 360,000 businesses. The Albanese Government says it is supporting the industry to continue building and setting new records. A compilation of the five new TV commercials and the full US and China ads has been made available. 'The previous campaign struck a chord with visitors, with Ruby the Roo bounding into the imagination of countless guests, encouraging them to book a holiday down under. I know this iteration, featuring popular talent like Robert Irwin, will be a smash. Tourism is the lifeblood of so many communities right around the country and creates hundreds of thousands of jobs. Come and Say G'day is bringing more visitors to our shores, creating more jobs and growing our economy,' said Trade and Tourism Minister Don Farrell. 'Supporting our tourism industry means supporting the jobs in Australia that rely on it. This next chapter of Come and Say G'day will do just that. It's energetic, funny and heart-warming, and highlights Australia's iconic places and the memories you can make but visiting them. I can't wait to see the campaign launched across key markets, and bringing more visitors to every part of Australia,' said Assistant Minister for Tourism Nita Green. 'Traditionally tourism campaigns have leveraged one famous face across every market but for our latest campaign Ruby will be joined by well-known talent from five different markets to showcase personal lasting memories of a holiday to Australia,' said Tourism Australia Managing Director Phillipa Harrison. The new campaign features Australian wildlife conservationist Robert Irwin in the US; food writer and TV cook Nigella Lawson in the UK; actor Yosh Yu in China; entrepreneur and philanthropist Sara Tendulkar in India; and media personality and comedian Abareru-kun in Japan. These international stars combine with local talent, including Australian actor Thomas Weatherall and Ruby the Kangaroo, to create bespoke invitations for five markets that are tailored for each country to showcase the sort of tourism experiences travellers are looking for. This campaign is part of the enormous body of work Tourism Australia does in key markets around the world and is backed up by a whole range of programs that helps our Australian tourism industry grow their international business. With competition for the international tourism dollar greater than ever before, we are confident this second chapter of Come and Say G'day will ensure Australia continues to remain front of mind for travellers looking to plan and book their next holiday,' Harrison added.
