Mayor Kraham announces $81K grant to combat homelessness
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – An emergency warming center in downtown Binghamton will now be available to homeless people 7 days a week using federal funds allocated by the city.
Mayor Jared Kraham announced a total of $81,000 to go toward homelessness prevention services. Roughly $49,000 of that will support the UP Comfort Center operated out of United Presbyterian Church on Chenango Street by the Addiction Center of Broome County.
ACBC previously opened up the center with 42 beds from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Sunday night through Thursday night. This additional funding allows it to be open Friday and Saturday nights as well.
'You're going to have less people potentially dealing with the Binghamton Police Department, you're going to have less people breaking into vacant homes to stay warm, you're going to have less issues where people are not getting the services that they need. We know that these warming centers, in contact with homeless service agencies, can be a pipeline to help find help with substance use disorder, mental health issues,' Kraham said.
$16,000 will go to the Family Enrichment Network's Caring Homes program which provides short-term rental assistance. $8,000 will go to Volunteers of America for its rapid rehousing program.
And the Institute for Community Alliance will receive 8 thousand for a homeless management information system.

Salvation Army of Binghamton continues services with mobile kitchen and pantry
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – After being forced to close earlier this month, The Salvation Army of Binghamton has found a new way to keep community members fed. The charity reopened its free community meal after securing a state-of-the-art mobile canteen. The food truck, which is a high-tech kitchen on wheels, will serve five meals a week at American Legion Post 80 on Main Street. The Salvation Army is also continuing its food and hygiene pantry. On May 15, the Binghamton Corps Community Center was closed at the request of Mayor Jared Kraham after a stabbing claimed the life of one man during a meal event. Captain Joseph Hansen says that with the mobile services, the organization has seen several new faces. He says they serve on average 100 meals a day. 'We just want to make sure we're meeting the mission and the needs of this community. Food insecurity is such a high need in this area that we wanted to make sure that we weren't going to be causing a problem by not being in the fight. So, we wanted to make sure to get back out there as fast as possible,' said Hansen. The Salvation Army will be moving to a new location at 86 Walnut Street on the city's Westside in October. Hansen says the mobile canteen is located 100 yards away from the new site to get people used to coming in that direction. Hansen says the organization is in need of help during this time of transition. It is currently collecting donations and is seeking volunteers to help deliver and serve meals. Main Street Safety Improvement and Paving Project begins
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A project to improve safety for pedestrians and motorists along a busy Binghamton thoroughfare is officially underway. The Main Street Safety Improvement and Paving Project began this week. The $6.2 million construction project will upgrade intersections and pavement conditions from Front Street to Floral Avenue. Work includes new curbs, high-visibility crosswalks, ADA-accessible curb ramps, as well as pedestrian crossing and traffic signals at multiple intersections. Main Street will also be paved during the project. According to Mayor Jared Kraham, the safety improvements are expected to reduce traffic accidents by 25 percent. Initial sections will be completed in the fall, and final work is expected to be done next summer. NYOCM: Multiple underage individuals became ill due to gummies from Maraym's
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – The New York Office of Cannabis Management tells News 34 that multiple underage individuals fell ill and were hospitalized after purchasing and consuming illegal cannabis gummies from Maryam's Taste of Halal in Binghamton. OCM seized the unregulated products and issued a notice of violation to Maryam's for the incident at 69 Court Street. The Office reminds residents interested in cannabis products that there are currently two licensed dispensaries in Binghamton: Just Breathe and Cotton Mouth Dispensary. Jared Kraham announced the violation on X earlier this week, stating, 'Unlicensed stores selling illegal and untested cannabis products are dangerous. I urge Binghamton residents to buy only from NYS-regulated cannabis dispensaries. Any other business selling cannabis is putting your health at risk and probably ripping you off.'
