Main Street Safety Improvement and Paving Project begins
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A project to improve safety for pedestrians and motorists along a busy Binghamton thoroughfare is officially underway.
The Main Street Safety Improvement and Paving Project began this week.
The $6.2 million construction project will upgrade intersections and pavement conditions from Front Street to Floral Avenue.
Work includes new curbs, high-visibility crosswalks, ADA-accessible curb ramps, as well as pedestrian crossing and traffic signals at multiple intersections.
Main Street will also be paved during the project.
According to Mayor Jared Kraham, the safety improvements are expected to reduce traffic accidents by 25 percent.
Initial sections will be completed in the fall, and final work is expected to be done next summer.

The crypto markets remain stalled as the Trump administration has urged countries to submit their best trade offer by Wednesday, Reuters reported on June 2. The crypto market has seen its total capitalization decline from approximately $3.5 trillion to a little above $3.2 trillion within the last 7 days. Similarly, the price of the largest cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, is 7% lower than the all-time high (ATH) it reached on May 22. Other leading cryptocurrencies, such as XRP, SOL, Dogecoin, ADA, and SUI, have seen their prices decline as much as 14% over the last week. The crypto market, which is already well-known for its unpredictability, has seen a great deal of ups and downs as a result of the ebbs and flows of President Donald Trump's tariff war over the last two months. Trump hiked tariffs on all countries on Apr. 2 before pausing them for all except China for 90 days. While the administration has claimed its goal is to finalize 90 trade deals within 90 days, it has so far reached an agreement with only one of its partners, Britain. As per Reuters, it has seen a draft letter the office of the U.S. Trade Representative has sent to countries that are engaged in active negotiations. The countries are supposed to offer their best proposals regarding tariff and quota offers for the purchase of industrial and agricultural imports from the U.S., among other details. The U.S., in turn, will offer "a possible landing zone" after assessing the proposals within days. The letter indicates growing urgency within the Trump administration to finalize deals by the July 8 deadline. New drop-off rules at BNA spark backlash from rideshare drivers and travelers
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Starting Tuesday, rideshare users heading to the Nashville International Airport should plan to leave at least 10 minutes earlier. BNA now requires rideshare drivers to drop off and pick up in the same location — at the Ground Transportation Center. 📧 Have breaking news come to you: → Abdul Helmandai has driven for Uber Black in Nashville for three years and is a member of the Tennessee Driver Union. 'They are making a decision without discussing it with the drivers,' Helmandai told News 2. 'I mean, the drivers are the backbone; they are the real ones. If there is no driver, then I can bet there would be no airport.' Helmandai told News 2 that the airport's new policy will slow things down for both drivers and riders. Even before the policy change, Helmandai explained that drivers were already seeing pickup cancellations due to traffic. 'It will take more than an hour to pick up one customer just because drop off and pick up point same place,' Helmandai said. Airport officials said the move is part of a long-term plan to reduce congestion and support the airport's growth, but Helmandai told News 2 the change would devastate the rideshare business as people move toward more convenient modes of transportation. 'The taxi will become more convenient. You just walk out, 'Taxi!' get in and go,' Helmandai said. 'But if you take a rideshare, definitely it will take 30 minutes, an hour for every driver to get there.' The change also raises concerns for travelers with mobility issues or young children. 'This place is huge as it is, and to have to make a passenger have to walk that much farther is ridiculous,' Nashville resident Melanie said. '…[For] anyone that has to take a wheelchair on a regular basis, this is going to be totally inconvenient,' she added. BNA representatives said the walk from the Ground Transportation Center to TSA is under 10 minutes. 'You are just going to add more traffic, more delays, and more problems — and that's one thing Nashville does not need,' Melanie said. Helmandai's plea to BNA: 'Don't treat us like we are nobody.' To customers: 'I ask you just to keep patience.' Menopause the Musical 2: Cruising Through Change is closing out Broadway in Binghamton's 2024-25 season. The show, which is the hilarious and heartfelt sequel to Menopause the Musical, will see the return of the four original characters, five years after the first musical. The story follows the women as they go on a cruise and catch up on their lives, face challenges, discover their true selves, and celebrate friendship.
