Village of Endicott Trustee Ted Warner dies, Anna Marion sworn in
ENDICOTT, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A Village of Endicott Trustee sadly passed away last month, leaving a vacant seat on the board. Trustee Ralph Theodore 'Ted' Warner passed away peacefully on April 30. Born on May 11, 1945, Warner was a resident of Endicott and took great pride in his connection to the community. In addition to being a successful businessman, Warner was active in the Old Village of Union Historical Society, of which his father, Ralph J. Warner, had been a founding member. Warner was later appointed Village Historian. Most recently, he completed two terms as a Trustee on the Endicott Village Board, serving until his passing. On Thursday, Anna Marion was sworn in as his successor. Marion was appointed Village Trustee by Mayor Nick Burlingame. Guthrie Lourdes Health and Fitness turns three with free wellness event
JOHNSON CITY, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A local gym is celebrating three years of wellness on Saturday. Guthrie Lourdes Health and Fitness is turning three. To commemorate the occasion, the gym is offering a free day of fitness and fun to the community. Those in attendance will be able to access the facility and participate in group classes. There will also be health screening and wellness information provided by Guthrie Lourdes Hospital. Guests can also enjoy self-care stations, healthy refreshments, demonstrations, a silent auction, and more. Guthrie Lourdes Health and Fitness is home to a large gym with a wide variety of fitness equipment as well as group fitness classes and several amenities including three pools, a hot tub, and men's and women's saunas. There is also childcare. General Manager Mark Powell says the event is perfect for non-members to come and check the facility out. 'It's really good for the community who has not been here yet to come and see what we're all about and have a free tour and take part in all of the classes that we have going on and all of the programs, especially for the kids and families,' said Powell. Main Street Safety Improvement and Paving Project begins
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A project to improve safety for pedestrians and motorists along a busy Binghamton thoroughfare is officially underway. The Main Street Safety Improvement and Paving Project began this week. The $6.2 million construction project will upgrade intersections and pavement conditions from Front Street to Floral Avenue. Work includes new curbs, high-visibility crosswalks, ADA-accessible curb ramps, as well as pedestrian crossing and traffic signals at multiple intersections. Main Street will also be paved during the project. According to Mayor Jared Kraham, the safety improvements are expected to reduce traffic accidents by 25 percent. Initial sections will be completed in the fall, and final work is expected to be done next summer. 52nd annual Greek Fest kicks off in Vestal
VESTAL, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – The weekend after Memorial Day means it's time for residents of Greater Binghamton to be Greek for a Day, or perhaps four days. The Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation in Vestal is holding its 52nd annual Greek Festival today through Sunday. This afternoon, guests were enjoying live music from singer John Koutsaris, keyboardist Theodore Gritziotis and bouzouki player George Gritziotis. As usual, lots of Greek delicacies were coming off the grill and out of the church kitchen, including gyro, souvlaki, mousaka, pastichio and spanakopita. There's a baked good section with baklava, diples, finikia and more. And don't forget the honey puffs and baklava sundaes. Drinks include Greek beer and wine, including a retsina, a traditional Greek wine that includes pine resin. Festival Chairman Jimmy Anastos, whose father Steve oversaw the event for decades, says he grew up working at the Greek Fest. Today, his own children, nephews and cousins are part of the more than 50 volunteers that make the fundraiser for the church possible. 'What can Greeks do better? Eat, drink, dessert and music. That's what we have in our culture, that's what we live by, that's how we grew up around the dinner table with Greek music and food. And that's what we have to offer and what we want to give all the Vestal community and the surrounding communities around the Triple Cities,' Anastos said. In addition to the music, there will be Hellenic dancers tomorrow at 5:30 and 7:30, Saturday at 1:30, 4 and 6:30 and Sunday at 1:30. The traditional leg of lamb dinner is available Sunday only. The hours are noon to 8 today through Saturday and noon to 4 on Sunday. There will be a shuttle bus available from the NYSEG lot on Old Vestal Road Friday from 6 to 9 and Saturday from 2 to 9.
