Ribbon cutting held for $15 million project at Good Shepherd Village at Endwell
ENDWELL, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Good Shepherd Village at Endwell held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday to celebrate the completion of a $15 million project. The two-year project provided extensive improvements to the campus in order to improve resident care and wellbeing. The upgrades include a larger dining room, a brand-new library, pub, and cafe, as well as upgraded outdoor spaces. A state-of-the-art physical therapy and fitness center was also constructed. President and CEO Jason Santiago says keeping the residents safe and comfortable during the renovation was vital. He says the first word that comes to mind when thinking of Good Shepherd is 'special'. 'Even more than the aesthetics of Good Shepherd Village, it's truly the people that make Good Shepherd Village a special place. Both the residents and the staff make Good Shepherd Village more than just a place to live and work. Those same people make this place a special community,' said Santiago. Joining Santiago in cutting the ribbon on Thursday was Rose Papa. Papa has been a resident of Good Shepherd Village for over 15 years, serving in leadership roles on the Residents' Council, starring in the community's commercials, and offering her home for tours. Papa says the new addition is beautiful. 'It was and still is a caring community of strangers who became friends and look out for each other. We may be twice the size now, but the feeling of community and caring is still here, and that's one of the reasons I like it here,' said Papa. Papa commended the staff for their excellent care over the years. The project was made possible by a grant from the Broome County Industrial Development Agency, as well as an additional local donation. The renovation was led by William H. Lane Incorporated. Renovations on First National Bank building close portion of Court Street
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A portion of the sidewalk along Court Street in downtown Binghamton is closed as historic renovation is underway to shore up the facade of the First National Bank building. The building, which has housed a number of businesses and restaurants over the years and is now occupied by Logowise, is part of the MetroCenter. It's owned by Marchuska Brothers which is repairing the ornate stone carvings and lettering at the top of the facade. The nearly 100-year-old building has been the victim of spalling, a form of deterioration where small chips and flakes of stone peel away. No significant pieces of the facade have fallen. The fence was erected to make space for a lift that Marchuska Brothers employees will use to do the work. The project began last year and is expected to be completed this year. The First National Bank building is a prominent surface for LUMA Festival projections each year. 52nd annual Greek Fest kicks off in Vestal
VESTAL, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – The weekend after Memorial Day means it's time for residents of Greater Binghamton to be Greek for a Day, or perhaps four days. The Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation in Vestal is holding its 52nd annual Greek Festival today through Sunday. This afternoon, guests were enjoying live music from singer John Koutsaris, keyboardist Theodore Gritziotis and bouzouki player George Gritziotis. As usual, lots of Greek delicacies were coming off the grill and out of the church kitchen, including gyro, souvlaki, mousaka, pastichio and spanakopita. There's a baked good section with baklava, diples, finikia and more. And don't forget the honey puffs and baklava sundaes. Drinks include Greek beer and wine, including a retsina, a traditional Greek wine that includes pine resin. Festival Chairman Jimmy Anastos, whose father Steve oversaw the event for decades, says he grew up working at the Greek Fest. Today, his own children, nephews and cousins are part of the more than 50 volunteers that make the fundraiser for the church possible. 'What can Greeks do better? Eat, drink, dessert and music. That's what we have in our culture, that's what we live by, that's how we grew up around the dinner table with Greek music and food. And that's what we have to offer and what we want to give all the Vestal community and the surrounding communities around the Triple Cities,' Anastos said. In addition to the music, there will be Hellenic dancers tomorrow at 5:30 and 7:30, Saturday at 1:30, 4 and 6:30 and Sunday at 1:30. The traditional leg of lamb dinner is available Sunday only. The hours are noon to 8 today through Saturday and noon to 4 on Sunday. There will be a shuttle bus available from the NYSEG lot on Old Vestal Road Friday from 6 to 9 and Saturday from 2 to 9.
