Man arrested in Gauteng for threatening Ramaphosa, others to face charges in WC court
CAPE TOWN - A man arrested for threatening President Cyril Ramaphosa and other high-profile figures will be transported to the Western Cape for a court appearance.
The suspect, 28, was arrested by the Hawks in Germiston in Gauteng on Friday after a case was opened earlier this month.
He faces charges of intimidation and is expected to appear in the Cape Town Magistrate's Court on Monday.
Hawks spokesperson Thandi Mbambo says the suspect allegedly sent a threatening voice message to a Cape Town-based CEO.
Threats were made against the president and several others.
"The suspect is also alleged to have sent multiple threatening messages targeting the complainant, her family, and the Executive Mayor of Cape Town. The matter was reported to the Cape Town based Hawks' CATS team, which conducted a swift investigation resulting in the suspect's apprehension in Gauteng."

A City of Cape Town law enforcement officer was arrested on Monday on charges of kidnapping, extortion and the murder of a man who disappeared after going to purchase a vehicle in Bellville. The 43-year-old suspect was apprehended during a multidisciplinary intelligence-led operation comprising the Hawks and the provincial anti-kidnapping and organised crime units. The victim was allegedly kidnapped in Kraaifontein on May 16 after telling a friend he was going to view the vehicle. Another friend received a phone call from the victim who reported he had been kidnapped and was being assaulted. 'Simultaneously, a ransom of R100,000 for the victim's release was demanded by the suspects. Further phone calls were made by the suspects whereby the ransom was reduced to R10,000,' said Hawks spokesperson Lt-Col Siyabulela Vukubi. An amount of R5,000 was deposited into a given bank account and the suspects demanded the balance. A day after the kidnapping, police swooped on addresses in Philippi and Kleinvlei which resulted in the arrest of four suspects aged 30 to 36 who have already appeared in court. 'The team was led to an open field on the dunes between Monwabisi beach and Macassar, where one of the accused pointed out a shallow grave where the victim was killed and buried,' said Vukubi. 'It transpired that the City of Cape Town law enforcement vehicle, which was driven by the suspect, was used in the commission of this heinous crime.'

Defence happy after captain accused of raping trainee at Tshwane Police Academy is granted bail
The police officer's legal representative argued the state had no grounds to oppose the bail application. A 59-year-old police captain accused of raping and sexually assaulting two trainees at the Tshwane Police Training Academy has been released on bail. He appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court on Monday for the outcome of his bail application. The police captain is an instructor at the academy located in Pretoria West, is facing charges of rape and sexual assault. The magistrate granted the accused R8 000 bail, a decision welcomed by his legal team. Rape accused Tshwane Police Training Academy captain granted bail Attorney Andrew Maoba told eNCA on Monday that the defence did not believe there was a basis for the state to oppose the officer's release on bail. 'We had foreseen that there was no need for these bail proceedings in any event to be opposed because the law in respect of bail is quite trite in South Africa, and it's not digging into the guilt or the innocence of the accused person. 'The test for bail proceedings, as we have indicated in court, substantiated with a case law, is whether the accused person or the applicant will stand trial, and he will not evade liability,' he said. Maoba further stated that the court's ruling indicated the strength of the bail application put forward by the defence. 'Unsurprisingly, the magistrate granted my client bail today.' 'The trainees at all various academics must not feel intimidated. When there are such incidents, they must come out, not die in silence and report them,' Gauteng deputy chairperson Solly Mathe said. Mathe added that Popcru had called on the South African Police Service (Saps) to implement preventative measures. 'They must create a space where it would be easy for trainees to come out and report such incident because we totally condemn this action.' Rape incident It is alleged that on 6 May, the captain called a 20-year-old trainee into his office while she was walking with her colleagues to their sleeping quarters. While in the office, the accused locked the door and told the trainee that if she did not sleep with him, he would issue her a misconduct letter related to an incident from April, during which the police captain accused her of failing to salute him. A second trainee came forward with allegations that the same captain sexually assaulted her in March this year, following his arrest on 7 May. More victims may still come forward as the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) continues its investigation into other possible incidents. According to the police, Gauteng recorded the highest number of reported rape cases involving police officers in the previous financial year, with just under 30 cases. Notably, more of these cases involved officers allegedly committing rape while on duty, compared to those reported while they were off duty.

Image: File A Law Enforcement officer from Cape Town's Anti-Land Invasion Unit has been arrested on charges of kidnapping, extortion and murder, following a ransom demand and the discovery of a victim's body in a shallow grave. The Hawks confirmed the arrest was made on Monday in Bellville following an intense investigation and a multi disciplinary intelligence operation. It's alleged the victim was kidnapped in Kraaifontein in May and was last seen by friend in Bellville, while intending to purchase a vehicle. The victim was then kidnapped and assaulted and a ransom amount of R100 000 was made, later being reduced to R10 000. Hawks spokesperson, Siyabulela Vukubi, said the officer's alleged four accomplices were arrested in May and the victim's body was found on Macassar in a shallow grave. 'On May 17, the team followed all the leads that led them to addresses in Philippi and Kleinvlei, which resulted in the arrest of the four accused - Mogamat Samuels (33), Thokozani Kamnjunga (36), Existing Mudivari (33) and Yasseen Jele (30), who have already made a court appearance,' he said. Instead another friend of the victim received a call from the victim reporting that he had been kidnapped and being assaulted.' Vukubi added that the Law Enforcement's vehicle could allegedly be linked to the crime. 'The suspects subsequently provided a bank account where the money should be deposited into. "It was alleged that an amount of R5 000 was deposited to that bank account and the suspects continued to demand the balance. 'Upon further probe, it transpired that the City of Cape Town Law Enforcement vehicle, which was driven by the suspect, was utilised in the commission of this heinous crime. 'The suspect will make first appearance in the Blue Downs Magistrate's Court on June 10, thereafter he will be joining his co- accused who will appear on June 12 in the same court for bail application.' Inspector Wayne Dayson for the City's Law Enforcement said they have been working together with the Hawks to secure an arrest. 'The officer who is stationed at the Anti-Land Invasion Unit was arrested amid an investigation by our Safety and Security Information Management Systems unit in collaboration with the Directorate of Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) into an incident in May. 'While the arrest of the officer is disappointing, the Safety and Security Directorate is committed to rooting out corrupt and criminal elements and will not hesitate to investigate and take the required action when wrongdoing is uncovered. 'This matter is also being dealt with in terms of City policies and processes, and a disciplinary process is under way."
