Mint19-07-2025
New Delhi, Jul 19 (PTI) India Cements Ltd (ICL), now part of the Aditya Birla Group, on Saturday reported a consolidated net loss of ₹ 132.90 crore for the first quarter ended June 2025.
It had reported a net profit of ₹ 58.47 crore a year ago, according to a BSE filing by ICL, now a subsidiary of UltraTech Cement.
Its revenue from operations was marginally down at ₹ 1,024.74 crore in the June quarter of FY26. This was ₹ 1,026.76 crore in the corresponding quarter of the last fiscal.
The total expenses of ICL declined 12.43 per cent to ₹ 1,042.19 crore in the first quarter of FY26.
ICL's total income, which includes other income, in the June quarter was marginally down at ₹ 1,033.85 crore.
UltraTech, the country's leading cement maker, acquired the promoter's stake in the South-based cement maker. Consequently, ICL became a subsidiary of UltraTech Cement, with effect from December 24, 2024.
"PAT before onetime exceptional items was a negative ₹ 9.13 crore compared to negative ₹ 182.21 crore over the same period last year," said an earnings statement by the company.
It has refinanced its debt, resulting in a significant reduction in finance costs to ₹ 26.58 crore from ₹ 82.36 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous year.
According to ICL, it is "deriving benefits of synergy" with its holding company, UltraTech, which will improve its efficiency.
"The company is planning a capital expenditure programme over the next 2 years for improving efficiency and reducing operating costs, increasing the share of renewable power and improving safety standards," said ICL.
It further added that its profitability is expected to improve further as the benefit of this capex programme starts flowing together with synergies from economies of scale, wider distribution network and stronger balance sheet.
On the outlook, ICL said, it "is poised to grow stronger. Increasing government spending on infrastructure and the improvement in demand in housing markets will further boost the performance of the company".

Chennaiyin FC suspends operations due to uncertainty surrounding ISL

Indian club football appeared to be in complete crisis as Chennaiyin FC on Wednesday suspended its operations in view of the uncertainty surrounding the Indian Super League, days after Bengaluru FC and Odisha FC decided to stop paying salaries to their first-team players and staff. Chennaiyin's decision came a day before a crucial meeting between the All India Football Federation (AIFF) top brass and eight ISL clubs on Thursday. Chennaiyin FC is, however, unlikely to have a representation in the meeting as the club is not among the signatories calling for such a move. "In the light of the continuing uncertainty surrounding the future of the ISL, Chennaiyin FC has taken the extremely difficult decision to temporarily pause club operations," the Chennai-based club said on its social media handle. "These are never easy decisions to make, and ours has come after much thoughtful consideration and careful deliberation. The challenges of being a stakeholder in Indian football are well recognized. "This is not a step we take lightly. It affects people we care about deeply. The welfare of our players, coaches, staff and their families remains a priority, and we are in constant communication with them as we face this together." The two-time ISL champion side "hope that this pause will be short-lived and that we can return to doing what we love as soon as there is clarity for all clubs". "Throughout this uncertainty, our commitment to the growth of Indian football, upon which this journey began remains as strong as ever. To our loyal supporters, your passion and belief have always inspired us. We ask for your understanding as we navigate this challenging period, and we look forward to better days ahead," it added. "At Chennaiyin FC, we are more than just a football club. We are a family. Like any family, we support each other in difficult times. However we must remain true to the core values on which this club was built and which we have always strived to uphold." Last week, ISL side Odisha FC took the decision to suspend paying salaries to its first-team players and staff. Late on Monday, Bengaluru FC indefinitely suspended contracts of its first-team players and staff amid the continued uncertainty over the ISL, which remains on hold. The club, home to legendary striker and former India captain Sunil Chhetri, said the lack of clarity on the League's future left it with no choice but to take this "difficult" decision. "In view of the uncertainty surrounding the future of the Indian Super League season, Bengaluru Football Club has taken what is a very difficult decision of indefinitely suspending the salaries of the players and staff belonging to the first team, the Bengaluru club had said in statement. "Running and sustaining a football club in India has always been an uphill climb, one we have put everything aside made, season after season. "However, the lack of clarity on the League's future leaves us with no choice but to take this step. The future and well-being of our players, staff and their families is of utmost importance to us, and we are in touch with them as we wait for a resolution," the statement added. Bengaluru FC also urged both the AIFF and FSDL to resolve the impasse at the earliest. "We urge the AIFF and FSDL to end this impasse swiftly. The uncertainty benefits no one, and a prompt resolution is vital for the future of Indian football," the club said. The ISL was put on hold by its organisers, Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL), due to the unresolved status of the Master Rights Agreement (MRA) with the All India Football Federation (AIFF). The current 15-year MRA between FSDL and AIFF, signed in 2010, expires on December 18. Amid the growing uncertainty, eight ISL clubs have written to the AIFF expressing concern about their future. The AIFF's top brass is scheduled to meet the CEOs of the eight clubs on Thursday to discuss the situation. The letter, calling for a "constructive dialogue" with the AIFF, was signed by Bengaluru FC, Jamshedpur FC, FC Goa, Hyderabad FC, Kerala Blasters, NorthEast United FC, Odisha FC and Punjab FC. The three Kolkata-based clubs -- Mohun Bagan Super Giant, East Bengal, Mohammedan Sporting -- as well as Mumbai City FC and Chennaiyin FC were missing. Last month, AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey had assured that the 2025-26 ISL season would be held, but stopped short of confirming a start date. On July 11, FSDL officially announced that the 2025-26 ISL season had been put "on hold due to uncertainty surrounding the MRA renewal. The ISL usually runs from September to April. Following a directive from the Supreme Court, the AIFF has been asked not to negotiate new terms of the MRA (with FSDL) until a final judgment is delivered in the AIFF draft constitution case. A ruling is expected soon. (Only the headline and picture of this report may have been reworked by the Business Standard staff; the rest of the content is auto-generated from a syndicated feed.)

Highway Infrastructure IPO day 3 Live: GMP, subscription status to review. Apply or not?

Highway Infrastructure IPO day 3: The initial public offering (IPO) of Highway Infrastructure Limited opened on 5 July 2025 and will remain open until 7 August 2025. This means investors have just one day to apply for the public issue. The Indian infrastructure company has declared the Highway Infrastructure IPO price band at ₹ 65 to ₹ 70 per equity share. The company aims to raise ₹ 130 crore from this fresh capital-cum offer for sale. The public issue is proposed for listing on the BSE and the NSE. According to the Highway Infrastructure IPO subscription status, the public offer received a strong response from investors. It had been subscribed to its offer nearly 73 times after bidding on day 2. Meanwhile, company shares are available in the grey market at a robust premium. According to market observers, Highway Infrastructure shares are available at a premium of ₹ 41 in the grey market today. This is ₹ 3 higher than Wednesday's Highway Infrastructure IPO GMP of ₹ 38. Observers said that the Highway Infrastructure IPO GMP has surged despite the sell-off in the secondary market on Wednesday. They expected further improvement in the grey market sentiment regarding the Highway Infrastructure IPO once there is a trend reversal on Dalal Street. By 5:00 PM on day 2 of bidding, the public issue had been subscribed 72.92 times, the retail portion had been booked 73.55 times, the NII portion had been filled 97.70 times, whereas the QIB segment had been booked 7.10 times. Assigning a 'subscribe' tag to the public issue, Anand Rathi says, "At the upper price band, the company is valued at a FY25 P/E of 22.5x, with a post-issue market capitalisation of ₹ 5,020 million. It presents a niche opportunity in India's tollway and EPC infrastructure space, supported by consistent growth and a robust order book. Using ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) technology in toll systems provides a competitive advantage, while the combination of toll and EPC businesses offers diversified revenue streams. Considering these factors, the IPO seems fully priced, and a "SUBSCRIBE – LONG TERM" recommendation is suggested." On whether one should apply for the IPO, Arun Kejriwal, Founder of Kejriwal Research and Investment Services, said, "Infra is a segment where a four-digit order book is a common phenomenon. Looking at the Highway Infrastructure IPO size of ₹ 130 crore, it seems the company has limited opportunity, and the public issue is on the borderline of SME and mainboard." Highway Infrastructure IPO allotment date is most likely on 8 August, while Highway Infrastructure IPO listing date is most likely on 12 August 2025. Indian space startups have run into a talent hurdle

New Delhi: India's private space startups are finding it hard to get top-notch talent as there aren't enough graduates trained in niche topics and specialized skills. And even the small number of candidates available prefer companies overseas because of low salaries back home. While companies are increasing their average pay and also training employees, niche talent in rocketry, propulsion technologies, photonics and sensors—the differentiating factors among space startups—is in short supply, according to founders, analysts and industry observers that Mint spoke with. Around 175 institutions in India offer undergraduate degrees in aerospace engineering, while 75 offer postgraduate courses, according toMint's analysis of five educational services platforms. Around 8,000 aerospace engineers graduated last year, accounting for just 0.5% of the 1.5 million engineers who pass out of Indian colleges annually. That includes the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), which is affiliated with the Union government's Department of Space. Chicken and egg situation But it's more like a chicken-and-egg situation: while there are few qualified candidates, the salaries also aren't good enough to encourage students to select such courses. While none of the startups disclosed their salary offers, citing confidentiality and competition, Mint found that freshers, working on low-value software engineering or satellite assembly projects, are offered packages as low as ₹3 million a year, and those with two-three years of experience get up to ₹6 million per annum. Such roles, however, are in tens and not even hundreds across India's 200-odd space startups. Companies say finding the right engineer is rare, while candidates blame a lack of jobs. 'About 30% of our hires are freshers directly out of colleges, but we recruit the rest from various industries such as automobiles," said Pawan Kumar Chandana, cofounder and chief executive of Hyderabad-headquartered Skyroot Aerospace. 'For most engineers that we hire, we've set up skilling and training programmes, and it takes about six months to a year for them to get ready to work on various projects." According to Anirudh Sharma, cofounder and chief executive of Bengaluru-based Digantara Research and Technologies, India doesn't have enough formal university courses or research programmes in skills such as photonics and optical engineering. 'For instance, National Institute of Technology, Warangal (in Telangana) ran about five batches and produced some of the best optical communications engineers in the country—but they are a finite pool, out of which some are employed across industries and others have moved abroad," he said. In most cases, startups like Bengaluru-based Bellatrix Aerospace hire from other engineering streams. 'For instance, we take recruits with chemical and metallurgical engineering backgrounds and train them to work on our proprietary rocket propulsion technology," said Yashas Karanam, co-founder and chief operating officer. Not many courses Specialized space courses are also rare. Towards the end of 2023, Pawan Goenka, chairman of government-affiliated Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (In-Space), had said that the agency is working with the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to introduce space curricula in engineering institutes. On 28 July, In-Space announced the introduction of a short-term skill development course for 'space technology in agriculture" with Amity University, Noida. However, it is only a certificate course and does not offer the kind of deep dive that would produce the niche skills that Chandana, Sharma and Karanam are looking for. Fewer jobs Industry stakeholders said the lack of adequate talent is also due to fewer job opportunities. The Indian space industry at the moment is 'not offering opportunities that go beyond the existing roles at the Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro)", said Narayan Prasad Nagendra, chief operating officer of Netherlands-based space services marketplace SatSearch. 'Since a mass exodus to the IT (information technology) sector in the 1990s, Isro has steadied the ship—and now sees engineers sticking with it for a decade or more. In my conversations, engineers who gather such levels of experience only look for career opportunities outside in Europe or Japan," said Nagendra. 'Indian space firms are yet to offer perks and salaries that go beyond what Isro or private global firms do, which leads to top talent leaving the country beyond a point." According to Chaitanya Giri, a space fellow at the global think tank Observer Research Foundation, it is still early since the privatization of the space sector only took place three years ago. Giri said the sector will never see demand in thousands or millions, but only hundreds, and that too for core products and niche applications. 'Getting talent from other industries is only a stop-gap solution because automobiles and other core sectors can always have more room for growth," he said. 'What is needed now are niche specialization courses at top universities, and generous research budgets," Guri said. 'Until that happens, India's space industry will remain starved of the kind of talent that helped the US build the global majors we know today."
