Belagavi-Bengaluru Vande Bharat: Railway min repeats assurances, but no timeline yet
The minister repeated his assurance during the visit of Rajya Sabha member Iranna Kadadi, along with Union minister Pralhad Joshi and minister of railways for the state V Somanna, in New Delhi on Thursday, to follow up on the long-pending demand for the train.
"The permission was already granted. We are waiting for the availability of coaches. The train will commence operations as soon as they are allocated," Vaishnaw stated, according to Kadadi.
However, repeated assurances without concrete action have left citizens disillusioned. On May 6, Union minister Pralhad Joshi officially announced the sanction of a dedicated Vande Bharat Express between Belagavi and Bengaluru after consultations with the railway minister. Since then, MPs including Jagadish Shettar and Iranna Kadadi have made multiple representations to the ministry, but each time the response has remained the same.

In Nov 2023, the Railways successfully conducted a trial run of an 8-coach Vande Bharat train between Dharwad and Belagavi. At the beginning of 2024, officials proposed extending the existing Bengaluru–Dharwad service to Belagavi. In May 2025, the railway ministry announced a dedicated train service instead, which was widely welcomed by the public.
Despite the excitement and public celebrations that followed, more than two months have passed since the announcement, and there is still no confirmed date for the launch.
In response to mounting public pressure, Belagavi's elected representatives continue to pursue the matter with the railway minister, but there no official guarantee or schedule has been given by the ministry.
Meanwhile, Kadadi said the railway minister also assured that the Belagavi–Miraj special train will be converted into a regular passenger service within a month. In a public statement, he added that Vaishnaw also promised to personally visit Ghataprabha railway station following complaints of poor-quality construction work there.

SUV, sedan prices likely to see sharp cut, with lower 40% GST
It isn't just small cars and two-wheelers, large sedans and SUVs too are likely to see a sharp reduction in prices as goods and services tax (GST) is expected to come down from the current, up to 50 per cent , to proposed 40 per cent , the slab for luxury and sin goods. But, there is also the fear that the GST Council may come up with a new cess on higher-end vehicles. At a ministerial panel meeting on rate rationalisation on Thursday, some states demanded a cess on top of the 40 per cent tax. Currently, SUVs and sedans over four metres in length and engine capacity above a certain level attract 28 per cent GST and 22 per cent cess. A final decision on rates will be taken by the GST Council, led by Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman next month, amid indications that the Centre is keen on a flat 40 per cent levy on a handful of sin and luxury goods without any cess. Govt sources had said that cess will be removed as it was to be levied for five years to "compensate" states for "revenue loss" due to GST implementation, but was extended by another three years to cover losses due to Covid. While small cars and two-wheelers are expected to see the burden fall from 29 per cent to 18 per cent , the absolute gain (in value terms) for those buying SUVs may be higher. The reduction for all internal combustion engine vehicles or those powered by diesel and petrol, including hybrids, will reduce the differential with electric vehicles, which attract 5 per cent GST. Many see that as a disincentive for EVs, particularly in the more price-sensitive segment of two-wheelers, where the difference in GST will be 13 percentage points compared to 23 percentage points currently. EVs have a higher capital cost but lower operating cost, with purchase price often acting as an entry-level barrier. A concern among consumers and in govt circles is regarding the auto industry's willingness to pass on the gains, given that the anti-profiteering clause does not come into play. Although the auto industry is often accused of pocketing the gains, government sources said there will be pressure on companies to pass on the benefits, especially to boost demand, amid sluggish sales.

Contradictions in Ministry data & Swachh survey over Chandigarh's waste segregation: MP Manish Tewari
Member of Parliament (MP) Manish Tewari on Thursday raised objections over the Union government's reply in Parliament regarding the city's waste management performance, pointing out glaring contradictions between the ministry's claims and the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 results. Member of Parliament (MP) Manish Tewari highlighted that the ministry's data is at odds with the recent Swachh Survekshan rankings released on July 17. (HT File) In a written reply to Tewari's question on solid waste management, the Union ministry of housing and urban affairs said Chandigarh practices 100% door-to-door waste collection and 100% segregation at source across all its 35 wards. The ministry also maintained that the city scientifically processes all of the 490 tonnes of waste generated daily. Tewari highlighted that the ministry's data is at odds with the recent Swachh Survekshan rankings released on July 17. While Chandigarh was adjudged the second cleanest city in the 3-10 lakh population category, the survey revealed that the city had achieved only 14% in source segregation at the household level, far from the 100% figure cited in Parliament. According to the rankings, Chandigarh scored full marks in cleanliness of residential and market areas, public toilets, water bodies, waste processing, and dumpsite remediation. The city also recorded 93% in door-to-door collection. But its performance in segregation at source remained a major weak point. 'I had asked a Parliamentary Question on the non-functioning of the solid waste processing plant in Dadumajra. Not only did the government evade the core issue, but the figures given in the answer contradict the data available on the Swachh Survekshan website,' Tewari said.

'Maharaja tariffs': Trump's trade adviser Peter Navarro's fresh attack on India over Russian oil; calls it 'laundromat' for Moscow
US President Donald Trump's trade counsellor Peter Navarro on Friday accused New Delhi of acting as a 'laundromat for the Kremlin' by purchasing discounted Russian crude oil, refining it, and selling the products at premium prices worldwide. Navarro, said India's actions were 'perpetuating the war' in Ukraine, dismissing claims that Russian imports were essential for India's energy security. 'Prior to Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, India bought virtually no Russian oil... The argument now, when this percentage has gone up to 30-35%, that somehow they need Russian oil, is nonsense,' Navarro said. He alleged that Indian refiners were 'profiteering' from the arrangement, adding: 'Russian refiners have gotten in bed with Italian refiners in a game in which they get cheap Russian crude at a discount. Then they make refined products, which they sell at premium prices into Europe, Africa and Asia.' Navarro linked the practice directly to Russia's war effort, claiming that money from these transactions was fuelling Moscow's weapons production. 'India doesn't appear to want to recognise its role in the bloodshed... It's cosying up to Xi Jinping. They don't need the (Russian) oil. It's a refining profiteering scheme. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Resmed AirSense 11 with flat 20% off ResMed Buy Now Undo It's a laundromat for the Kremlin,' he said. While he described Prime Minister Narendra Modi as 'a great leader', Navarro appealed to India to reconsider its stance: 'What you're doing right now is not creating peace. It's perpetuating the war.' 'Maharaja tariffs, higher non-tariff barriers' The Trump aide defended Washington's decision to impose 25 per cent tariffs on Indian goods, which took effect in August and the punitive tariff which will take effect on August 27, arguing that New Delhi had long maintained 'higher tariffs, Maharaja tariffs, higher non-tariff barriers' while running a 'massive' trade surplus with the United States. 'In India, 25% tariffs were put in place because they cheat us on trade. Then 25% because of the Russian oil... That hurts American workers and businesses. Then they use the money that they get from us when they sell us stuff to buy Russian oil, which then is processed by refiners... but then the Russians use the money to build more arms and kill Ukrainians. So American taxpayers have to provide more aid... That's insane,' Navarro said, adding that 'the road to peace runs through New Delhi. ' 'Very self-destructive of US foreign policy interests' Navarro's remarks come amid broader debate in Washington on how to handle India's balancing act between the West, Russia and China. Former US ambassador Nikki Haley has urged Trump to rebuild ties with New Delhi, calling India a 'prized free and democratic partner' against Beijing's rise. Meanwhile, economist Jeffrey Sachs has condemned the tariffs as 'bizarre' and 'very self-destructive of US foreign policy interests', warning that they risk uniting BRICS countries against Washington. 'India is not biggest purchaser of Russian oil: EAM Jaishankar' India has pushed back strongly. External affairs minister S Jaishankar said the logic behind targeting India was flawed, given that China is the largest purchaser of Russian oil and the EU remains Moscow's biggest buyer of LNG. 'We are very perplexed at the logic of the argument... We are a country where the Americans have said for the last few years that we should do everything to stabilise the world energy market, including buying oil from Russia,' Jaishankar said. Ministry of external affairs also issued a statement reaffirming that India's imports were based on 'market factors' and aimed at ensuring the 'energy security of 1.4 billion people'. It called the additional tariffs 'extremely unfortunate', stressing that India would 'take all actions necessary to protect its national interests.'
