Demand for international status for Prayagraj airport gains momentum

Hindustan Times19-06-2025
The long-standing demand to upgrade Prayagraj Airport to international status is once again gathering momentum. In a meeting of the Airport Advisory Committee held at a hotel in Civil Lines on Wednesday, the issue was discussed in detail.
Member of Parliament Praveen Singh Patel attended the meeting as the chief guest. He stated that Prayagraj Airport had set new records during the Mahakumbh, and the time had now come to grant it international airport status.
During the meeting, committee members and officials highlighted that thousands of people from Prayagraj, Pratapgarh, Kaushambi and nearby districts in Madhya Pradesh travel to Gulf countries for employment every month. Currently, they must travel to Lucknow or Delhi to board international flights. Direct international flights from Prayagraj, they argued, would provide significant relief to travelers and boost the region's economic activity.
It was also announced that cargo services from Prayagraj Airport are set to begin soon.
Airport director Mukesh Upadhyay informed attendees that the required land for cargo operations has already been identified, and final approval from the ministry of civil aviation is pending.
Committee members shared concerns over reduced air connectivity. Prior to the Mahakumbh, Prayagraj was connected to 13 cities by air; that number has now dropped to seven. Members including Arunendra Singh, Anirudh Pratap Singh, Murarilal Agarwal and Ravi Mohan Mishra urged the restoration of lost routes and reiterated the demand for international status.
Other proposals raised during the meeting included launching a 6 am flight to Delhi with a return service in the evening, introducing new flights to Surat, Pune, Dehradun and Indore, and establishing a graphic work and information centre at the airport to promote tourism.

Stampede at Uttarakhand's Mansa Devi Temple, several injured

Haridwar: A stampede broke out at the Mansa Devi Temple in Uttarakhand's Haridwar early Sunday morning, leaving several devotees injured. The incident occurred due to heavy overcrowding in the temple premises as thousands of devotees thronged the sacred site during the ongoing holy month of Shravan. Eyewitnesses reported chaos as people began pushing each other while waiting in queues, resulting in panic and a sudden rush. Rescue and relief operations were swiftly initiated. Medical teams and ambulances reached the site promptly, and the injured were transported to nearby hospitals for immediate treatment. Authorities confirmed that relief work is still underway, and the situation is being closely monitored. Every year, Haridwar sees a massive influx of pilgrims during the month of Shravan, especially at the revered Har Ki Pauri and Mansa Devi Temple. This year, however, the situation turned grim due to an overwhelming crowd, triggering a stampede that has once again spotlighted the issue of crowd management at religious gatherings. This tragic incident adds to the growing number of stampedes that have occurred across India in 2025. So far, over 50 people have lost their lives in similar incidents at religious sites, railway stations, and public events. On January 8, a stampede occurred at the Lord Venkateswara Swamy temple in the Tirumala Hills, resulting in the deaths of at least six devotees and injuring many others as hundreds of worshippers pushed to obtain tickets for the Vaikunta Dwara Darshanam. On January 29, a stampede at the Sangam area during the Maha Kumbh claimed the lives of 30 people and left 60 others injured. Millions had gathered to take a holy dip on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya, considered one of the most sacred days in the Hindu calendar. In another major tragedy, 18 people were killed and more than a dozen were injured on February 15 at New Delhi Railway Station. The stampede broke out late at night, with most victims being Maha Kumbh pilgrims returning home. On May 3, at least seven devotees were killed and 80 were injured in a stampede during the annual 'Lairai Jatra' at Shree Lairai Devi Temple in North Goa's Shirgao village. On June 4, what was meant to be a moment of celebration turned tragic when at least 11 fans died in a stampede near Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium during the RCB victory celebration of their maiden IPL title win in 18 years. Further details regarding the Haridwar incident are still awaited as authorities continue to assess the situation.

Surat airport taxiway clears final hurdle as Yakshini tree transplanted

S Tired of too many ads? go ad free now urat: Surat airport authorities have finally removed and transplanted a tree that was obstructing the newly constructed parallel taxiway, enabling its operationalisation. The 10-foot tree, believed to be the sacred abode of a Yakshini (a female nature spirit), was shifted within the airport premises rather than being cut down due to religious beliefs. The 2,905-metre taxiway, built at a cost of Rs 63 crore, has been ready since March 31. However, operations were delayed as the tree stood near the 'Lalbai Mata' temple and held religious significance for local villagers. "The tree was considered auspicious as it was beside the temple. We also shifted the temple structure with it. The idol had already been moved to the new location two years ago. Now that the tree is relocated, the DGCA will soon inspect the taxiway. Once approved, flight operations will become more efficient," a senior airport official said. Officials waited for the monsoon to begin so that the tree could adapt better to its new location using natural rainwater. It has now been replanted near the airport fire station, close to gate number 3 in the operational area. Airport and fire personnel stationed nearby will care for the tree. The matter of removing the tree was also raised earlier during an Airport Advisory Committee meeting chaired by Union minister CR Patil.

Prayagraj's 1st rail-flyover likely to be ready by Dec

Prayagraj: The first-ever rail flyover in Prayagraj is expected to be completed by 2026 Magh Mela, marking a major milestone in improving the city's railway infrastructure. Chief public relations officer of North Central Railway Shashikant Tripathi said that the flyover is a vital infrastructure development and that work is progressing with speed adhering to quality standards. Currently, about 80% of the construction work on the flyover is completed. The work was halted for nearly five months due to the Maha Kumbh however it has now regained momentum. The work is expected to complete by Dec. The project, a part of the Mission Raftaar project, is being built at a cost of Rs 493 crore. It will pass over both the railway tracks and the roads, significantly easing congestion. This rail flyover will significantly enhance train operations by eliminating the need for trains to stop unnecessarily at the outer signal, thereby improving punctuality and streamlining traffic at the busy Prayagraj Junction. Flyover is being constructed as a part of the fourth railway line project from the junction to Bamrauli and will cover nearly 3 kilometres. The project started at the Subedarganj Railway Station and is being developed parallel to the Sulemsarai side of this satellite station. The flyover will cross the Delhi-Howrah line near the North Central Railway headquarters and will conclude just before the Bamrauli Station. Once completed, this project will ensure smoother operations for trains coming from Rambagh and Prayagraj towards Kanpur. TNN
