King Charles knew Queen had died after hearing two devastating words
It was a bittersweet moment for Charles as he stepped into the role he'd been waiting for his whole life for.
The Royal Family has been through a few twists and turns but it was the end of a long stable chapter for the UK when Queen Elizabeth died in 2022. The monarch served an incredible 70 years on the throne, making her Britain's longest-reigning, and she was one of the most popular public figures across the globe.
With the end of an era marked by the Queen's death, it also heralded a new beginning as King Charles stepped into the role he'd been waiting to do his whole life. At the age of 73, Charles became King, a bittersweet move as he was forced to navigate his new position whilst also grieving for his mum, as writes the Mirror.
The Queen was at Balmoral and had been at the Scottish estate for the weeks leading up to her death at the age of 96. On the morning she passed, September 8, 2022, the then Prince Charles was called and told that it would not be long before his mother died. He was joined by his sister Anne, and the pair spent the final few hour's of the monarch's life taking turns to sit beside her, it's revealed in a new documentary.
Channel 5's Birkhall: The King's Secret Sanctuary, sees experts discuss the moment Charles became the new King as they delve into the fact that he was 'summoned to Balmoral" from his own home on the Aberdeenshire estate, Birkhall, which is described as one of his favourite residences.
Former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond said in the documentary: 'He was told that it would probably be a few hours before she passed away."
Royal expert and journalist Emily Andrews added: "Charles and Anne had been taking it in turns to sit with the Queen and then, I think, as she slipped into a coma, Charles needed a bit of fresh air and some nature.
"So he went to the grounds of Birkhall, and it was there that he took the call."
Viewers will discover that ahead of Charles being given the official news of the Queen's death, he already knew thanks to two words that were said to him upon answering the call.
Jennie said: "He knew what had happened.
"Because he was addressed by the person who rang him, the courtier, as 'Your Majesty' and then he knew, 'Well, my mother has died' and obviously he raced back to Balmoral to be at her side."
It's also claimed in the documentary that members of the family felt relief after their huge loss because the Queen had been able to spend her last days at her beloved Balmoral, where she'd spent some of her happiest times.
Emily Andrews added: "I think everybody in the Royal Family, actually, was really glad it happened in Scotland and for Charles as well to be at Birkhall, where it's such a kind of safe space for him, he feels very calm and relaxed, I think was very important'.
After the news circulated within the wider family, Prince William, Edward and Andrew soon travelled to Balmoral, followed a short time later by Prince Harry.
Harry has since revealed that he found out about his grandmother's death from a breaking news alert on his phone after his flight to Scotland was delayed.

Following the monarch's passing, her coffin was taken to Edinburgh where it laid in rest and Scots were able to say goodbye and pay their respects.
The coffin was then flown to RAF Northolt and taken back to London to lie in state at Westminster Hall. Princess Anne accompanied her mother on every leg of the journey, calling it an 'honour and a privilege'.
Birkhall: The King's Secret Sanctuary , airs Saturday 21 June at 7.30pm on Channel 5.

The first act playing will be Cast, the Liverpool band formed in 1992 by John Power and best known for their 1995 albums All Change. Speaking about playing on the tour, John told the Mirror he will be their as an Oasis fan as well as playing before them. The band split up in 2001 but reformed in 2010 and last year they toured as support for Liam Gallagher as he played a Definitely Maybe Oasis tour which fans loved. And now the Manchester frontman has personally got them back for the Oasis shows. John said: "I got a call from a number, and I have got Liam and Noel's numbers and all that, but it was a different number, and I don't normally answer them. "And I picked it up, and it was Debbie, Liam's manager and his wife, and Liam in the background as well. And then Liam, he'd just spoken to Noel and they just discussed it, and they just said, 'You know, look, we just spoke to our kid. Do you want to open up on the tour?' "I was like, 'You know, I think I do actually!' And it was a really cool conversation, and then we were blown away like, I mean, it was like the best news we could have hoped for." He adds: "It's the biggest tour this year and it authenticates the legacy of Cast. This is a band in previous years if there was a Britpop list, top 20, we wouldn't even be in it. "But now you can't do it. Because it's like the biggest band of that time are saying 'check this out'." As well as the call from Liam, Cast firmly have the Oasis seal-of-approval with Noel Gallagher previously describing frontman John as being 'as cosmic as the day is long.' Fans can expect John to belt out 'Alright' and 'Finetime' to fire up audiences from the off, while slow burners such as 'Sandstorm' and 'Walkaway' are perfect for early singalongs in the stadiums. After touring with Oasis, Cast will then be on the road themselves with dates going through the year. The second and main support act will be Richard Ashcroft, the former Verve frontman. He has been playing alongside Oasis since the Nineties when they began. When they started out Oasis would support The Verve at shows because they were the bigger band. Speaking about the upcoming tour, Richard said: "I see it as I've got a very important part to play in this. "You know, back in the day Oasis supported The Verve and then it flipped around and we supported Oasis at Earls Court, then I as a solo artist have played with Oasis." He went on to tell the Chris Moyles Show on Radio X: "I said to Noel, 'You know, I think I'm the only person who could go in this slot. Especially for a huge outdoor show, because everyone wants you lot. And unless you're coming with something, unless you've got something to offer, I don't know what's gonna happen'." Get Liam Gallagher updates straight to your WhatsApp! As the hotly anticipated Oasis reunion tour grows closer, the Mirror has launched its very own Oasis WhatsApp community where you'll get all the latest news on Liam Gallagher in the lead up to the band's gigs. A two-time Ivor Novello Award winner (Songwriter of the Year and Outstanding Contribution To British Music), Ashcroft has become an accomplished and influential songwriters. His first chapter with The Verve reached a remarkable peak with 'Urban Hymns', and his support slot is sure to be a hit-laden set with the likes of 'Bitter Sweet Symphony', 'The Drugs Don't Work', 'Lucky Man' and 'Sonnet'. These tracks made Urban Hymns one of the biggest selling albums in UK history with 11 x Platinum certifications. As well as the Oasis Live 25 tour, Ashcroft will play select headline shows and festivals this Summer. According to the official Prinicipality Stadium website, doors open for the opening gig on July 4 at 5pm. Both support acts will be expected to play 30-45 minutes on stage, before the main event of Oasis back on stage for the first time since 2009. Based on previous shows at the Principality Stadium, the main headline act normally ends around 10.20pm. Cast would therefore be on stage around 6.30, followed by Richard Ashcroft, with Oasis taking to the stage around 8pm. Last Summer the Foo Fighters played the Principality Stadium and came on at 7.35pm but played an epic 25 song set. Oasis who are returning after some time away, may play a slightly shorter set, especially based on their history of punchier shorter set lists.

Prince Harry 'will extend olive branch to King Charles and Prince William by inviting them to the next Invictus Games' - but finale is set to clash with Queen's 80th birthday
The Duke of Sussex is to extend an olive branch to the Royal Family by inviting them to the 2027 Invictus Games, the Mail on Sunday can reveal. In the strongest indication yet that Prince Harry is keen for a reconciliation with the King and other senior Royals, it is understood that an emailed invitation will be sent out later this month, followed by a formal invitation. Sources said the timing of the invitation was designed to give the family the best possible chance of attending, given that Charles is known to draw up his schedule up to three years in advance. But the extraordinary move, which could see Harry pictured with the Royal Family for the first time since the late Queen's funeral, has raised eyebrows among some commentators. Ingrid Seward said: 'The King might attend to show support for the Armed Forces and congratulate Harry on the most significant success in his life. 'The only reason the King is wary of associating with his son is that he no longer trusts him not to repeat their private conversations as he has done in the past. This goes for all the working members of the family.' Fellow royal commentator Katie Nicholl added: 'The King absolutely wants a relationship with his youngest son and with his grandchildren. He has an incredible capacity for forgiveness and he wants to be magnanimous in all of this and therefore there's certainly a possibility that the King might consider attending Invictus.' Despite the Royals' previously strong support for Invictus, the invitation – should anyone choose to accept it – is likely to cause some headaches for Royal aides as it involves a major scheduling conflict. The Games are set to open at Birmingham's NEC on July 12, 2027, and will conclude on July 17 – the day Queen Camilla turns 80 – for which there are likely to already be some celebrations planned. It also remains to be seen whether the Duke would risk bringing Meghan and their children Archie, six, and four-year-old Lilibet, to the UK for the event, having previously insisted he could not do so unless the family were offered 'full police protection'. 'Harry has agreed that Invictus should extend an invitation to his family,' a source told The Mail on Sunday. 'Invictus hopes the Royal Family will come along to support the wounded veterans taking part. Harry is hopeful his father will set aside their differences to attend the Invictus Games and support veterans. 'The Royals have always been hugely supportive of Invictus and proud of what Harry has achieved in that arena. This is one olive branch from him which might be reciprocated.' Harry, 40, made it clear in a BBC interview last month that he would welcome a rapprochement with his father and with the wider family, despite acknowledging the hurt caused by his brutally honest memoir, Spare. 'There's no point in continuing to fight any more,' he said. 'Life is precious.' And he added: 'Forgiveness is 100 per cent a possibility because I would like to get my father and brother back.' The Invictus invitations are thought to represent the first time Harry has publicly reached out in a bid to gather his family together. The invitees and the wording of the invitations are said to have been approved by Harry, with the emails being sent to private secretaries at the Palace. The Games are expected to bring significant economic and social benefit to Birmingham. A spokesman for Invictus said: 'No formal invitations have been issued as preparations are in the early stages.'

My marriage to Spencer Matthews nearly didn't happen admits Vogue Williams as she reveals secret dating tip for singles
HER husband may raise money for charity and his brother is related to the Royal Family, but when it comes to the in-laws, Vogue Williams insists she is their favourite. The TV presenter married Spencer Matthews in 2018, and his brother James wed Princess Kate's younger sister Pippa Middleton the year before. 5 But in an exclusive interview, Vogue, 39, says: 'I am a firm favourite with my in-laws. I would say I'm even above the siblings.' Hers is a marriage that very nearly did not happen, though, because Vogue admits she once thought that Spencer, 36, was a 'sociopath'. He might now be a clean-living marathon runner, but in 2017, when they met on Channel 4 reality ski show The Jump, he was known for being a heavy-drinking party boy from Made In Chelsea. Vogue says: 'I kind of met him with a preconceived idea, and I was like, 'I'm not going to like him' because I thought he was a sociopath. 'But after I met him, I loved his personality straight away . . . he was so sound, but I was being really good at being single and I wanted to stay single, so I thought, 'He's going to be a really good friend' — that's the first thing I thought.' Fast forward eight years and the couple are now parents to Theodore, six, Gigi, four, and three-year-old Otto. 'I was feral' But in her new memoir, Big Mouth, Vogue reveals how life wasn't always easy for her growing up in County Dublin, with her parents Sandra and Freddie separating when she was five. And speaking to The Sun on Sunday, she explains how she found it tough when her own marriage to her first husband, Westlife star Brian McFadden, ended in divorce in 2017 — because she had never been single before. Vogue says: 'I was just kind of a relationship girl, and in a way I regret that. 'I was in a relationship from when I was 18 for six-and-a-half years, and then another relationship, and then after my first marriage ended, I made the conscious decision to try to be single because I'd never actually been on my own. Vogue Williams new book release 'I needed to be single. 'I absolutely hated it at the start, and then I loved it. 'I felt so in control of everything, and I was doing it on my own and I really enjoyed it. 'If you're a single girl in London, check out Battersea Park on a Saturday morning, and you can thank me later!' But Vogue admits she initially struggled to play the dating game. Laughing loudly, she says: 'I'm kind of a frigid. 'Before I met Spen, I'd meet someone nice and I'd kiss them, and I thought I'd be nice and invite them back to the party that was happening at my house. My parents were very strict, so we were always trying to find ways around that. Vogue Williams 'And we'd get back to the party, and they'd turn around to me and go, 'Will we go to your room?'. And I'd be like, 'Why? The party is here'. I never clicked that they were never coming back just for the party, but for other stuff.' However, Vogue's single days did not last long. She and Spencer tied the knot in June 2018 and she was firmly welcomed into the family fold by his multi-millionaire parents. Since then, Vogue has landed DJ gigs on Virgin Radio and Heart, and fronted segments on ITV's Lorraine and Channel 4's Steph's Packed Lunch. Meanwhile, Spencer is now sober, runs his own successful booze-free drinks brand, CleanCo, and last year ran 30 desert marathons in 30 days — all on sand. It set a new Guinness World Record and raised more than £500,000 for Global's Make Some Noise, which supports small charities across the UK. Between them, the power couple have more than two million followers on social media and their careers are going from strength to strength. 5 5 Vogue also reveals that her in-laws — landowner and entrepreneur David Matthews and his wife Jane — are role models who 'have been together for ever' and are still 'really happy'. She appears to have everything in life that could make her happy, too — but she says she has often struggled with the notoriously cut-throat showbiz world because she has never been 'cool'. Vogue explains: 'I think, in this industry in particular, there is nothing wrong if you are not in the cool gang. 'Let's say Kate Moss — she was in the cool gang back in the day, and I just feel I wouldn't have been, and I'm OK with that. 'Some people think that they are really cool and wouldn't give you the time of day. 'Sometimes they'd say hi to you at an event, and sometimes they wouldn't, and I've got to a point in my life where I really don't care if I'm not cool. 'I'm just grand where I am and I have got really good friends who are still in my life since I was 12, that I made when I was in secondary school, and they are actually what's most important in life. "My family are really amazing, and who I spend most of my time with. 'Spencer was raging' 'Then I come across people I love, and loads of people in the industry that I meet — they're sound. 'I was on Paloma Faith's podcast the other day and was really nervous because it's Paloma, but she was just fing hilarious and brilliant. 'She's pretty cool, so maybe I've got a foot in the door there!' Vogue has never fully left her Irish roots. For her book, she enjoyed reflecting on her life growing up. She says: 'I loved going back to my childhood and going back through all the things my sister Amber and I used to do. 'My parents were very strict, so we were always trying to find ways around that. 'There was a swamp around the corner that we always wanted to swim in, but we weren't allowed. 'We'd go to our friends' house up the road and their parents didn't give a crap what they did. 'So, we would go to their house and put their clothes on and swim in the swamp. 5 'Then we would go back and put our own clothes on and act like nothing had happened. I was feral.' Soon, her own kids will be able to follow in her footsteps because she and Spencer are hoping to spend more time near her home town of Howth, Dublin, in a house the couple bought last year. Vogue calls it their 'forever home', and they have put their apartment overlooking the River Thames up for sale, too. They first listed it a year ago and have recently slashed the price by £1.3million to £3.9million. Vogue says: 'I like to take the kids home as much as I can — I want them to have friends in Ireland, so that they always want to go back, and they enjoy spending time there. 'I want them to know Irish phrases if they can. 'They got the free Irish passports, so they've got to work for it a little bit. 'They wouldn't give Spenny one and he was raging.' Chances are that Vogue made the decision to move because — even though she struggles to admit it — she likes being in control. She says: 'I think when it comes to wearing the trousers between Spen and I, it shifts. 'I don't think anyone wants to wear the trousers full-time, do they? 'I don't. My therapist did tell me I was controlling though, so I fing fired him!' But she admits: 'He was right — I do like controlling things.' It's clearly a quality that her in-laws admire.
