Brad Marchand to make Panthers' debut vs. Utah

Reuters28-03-2025

March 28 - Brad Marchand is expected to make his debut for the Florida Panthers on Friday night when his new team hosts the Utah Hockey Club in Sunrise, Fla.
"We'll get him through warmups and see," Panthers coach Paul Maurice said on Friday morning, "but he's healed past that. We expect him to play."
Marchand, acquired from the Boston Bruins on March 7 for a conditional second-round draft pick in 2027, has not been able to play for Florida because of an upper-body injury.
Marchand, 36, had played his entire 16-season career with the Bruins, recording 422 goals and 976 points in 1,090 games. He has 21 goals and 26 assists to go with a minus-8 rating in 61 games this season. He had been Boston's captain since the beginning of the 2023-24 campaign.
Marchand has acclimated himself to his new surroundings since the trade.
"He's part of the group, and he's had the opportunity to get all the social parts out of the way," Maurice said. "He's dying to get into the game and play the game with the guys out there."
Florida (43-25-3, 89 points) has been idle since posting a 4-3 shootout victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday.
The Panthers are tied with the Tampa Bay Lightning for second place in the Atlantic Division, one point behind the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The Lightning breezed to an 8-0 win Thursday over the Utah Hockey Club (32-29-11, 75 points), who have lost two games in a row.
Starting goalie Karel Vejmelka surrendered four goals on 11 shots Thursday before being pulled midway into the second period. Jaxson Stauber gave up four goals on 10 shots in relief.
"It was really disappointing the way we came out, didn't win enough battles, didn't get on the inside," Utah coach Andre Tourigny said. "Everybody's in the same boat -- coaches, players. ... We all have to look ourselves in the mirror. The good thing is we're playing tomorrow."
The Utah Hockey Club fell behind 2-0 just 4:20 into the game and then allowed four goals in the second period.
"That was terrible, from the start to the finish, we didn't play nearly the style of game that we wanted to play, and it showed," Utah defenseman Mikhail Sergachev said. "We have to make a decision if we want to be in the playoffs or not. This is kind of a punch in the face."
Sergachev played his first game in Tampa since being traded during the offseason. He was with the Lightning from 2017 to 2024 and helped them win Stanley Cups in 2020 and 2021. He was honored with a video tribute during the first period.
"It's tough to talk about it right now, honestly, after a game like that," Sergachev said. "But I said in between periods that I really appreciated it. It was great. ... Thanks for the warm reception. The fans are great, everybody's great. It was supposed to be a special night."

Oilers look to ride momentum into Game 5 vs. Panthers in even series

June 13 - The Edmonton Oilers could have returned home a loss away from falling to the Florida Panthers in the Stanley Cup Final for a second straight year. Instead, they have a chance to put themselves one win away from a championship when they host the Panthers for Game 5 on Saturday. It didn't look like they would be in this position after Florida staked a 3-0 lead in the first period of Game 4 on Thursday. But the Oilers rallied to take a 4-3 advantage and, after the Panthers tied it in the dying seconds, Leon Draisaitl clinched it in overtime to give the visitors the 5-4 win. The best-of-seven series is tied 2-2. "I mean, everybody knows what the crowd's going to be like, Saturday night in Alberta, it's going to be exciting," veteran Edmonton winger Corey Perry said. "But I think I've talked about this a lot: We're mature and I think after that first period last night it showed we're a mature hockey team. I don't expect anything else." The 40-year-old helped spark the Oilers with some words of wisdom after the first period. He's also been delivering on the ice with nine goals in the playoffs, second only to Draisaitl. Perry, who is playing in the Stanley Cup Final for the fifth time in the past six seasons, has 140 points (63 goals, 77 assists) in 235 career playoff games. "He's been so valuable for us," Edmonton defenseman Mattias Ekholm said of Perry. "He's a leader and he knows exactly when to step in there. He doesn't do it all the time but when he does, it's always great and gets everybody's attention. "I mean, it was good from him last night again, both on the ice and in the locker room. It's what we expect out of him. He's getting up there, but he's still got it." The Panthers, meanwhile, are turning the page after the loss. They've been here before: Last year, Edmonton erased Florida's 3-0 series lead to ultimately force a Game 7. "We're calm and confident," Panthers defenseman Gustav Forsling said. "If we play our game, we know we're going to win most games. ... The good thing is, we have a game tomorrow, so we're ready to bounce right back. We're very excited to get back." It's been an incredibly tight series thus far, with three of the four games going to overtime. Florida's power play has helped fuel the defending Cup champions, going 7-for-21 with the man advantage. It could be the edge the Panthers need to regain the series lead; the Oilers have scored just four times on 20 power-play opportunities. "A lot of the success in postseason is how you handle your losses," Florida forward Sam Reinhart said. "They're going to happen, especially when you get down to the last two teams. You've got two of the best teams going at it. So you've got to expect to lose at some point. There's a lot we can learn from and come back strong in Game 5." Edmonton has not announced a starting goalie for Game 5. Stuart Skinner was pulled after allowing three goals on 17 shots in the first period in Game 4. He was also pulled early in the third period of the 6-1 loss in Game 3. --Field Level Media

Fans may have to prove migration status at World Cup-linked match

Fans attending the inaugural FIFA World Club Cup match in Miami have been told to carry proof they are in the country legally. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will be at the Hard Rock Stadium where Inter Miami, whose team includes Lionel Messi, will be playing against Egypt's Al Ahly on Saturday. Fear among fans was heightened when CBP said on social media that its officers would be 'suited and booted' at the fixture, before deleting the post. 'They are insisting that attendees bring proof of legal status to the games,' Thomas Kennedy, deputy director of the Florida Immigrant Coalition, told The Telegraph. 'It would be logistically a nightmare to check immigration status as a single person. They could be checking randomly, or it could just be general guidance to tell people to bring their immigration status. 'The problem is of clarity superimposed on the political tension gripping the country. 'This just provokes more tension,' he added. 'I would certainly say that people have to be wary and cautious.' CBP will be at all matches NBC Florida also reported that fans could be asked to prove their immigration status on Saturday. CBP has confirmed it will be at all the matches. ICE declined to comment on its deployment plans. Ostensibly, both organisations will be on hand to provide added security at a major sporting event, as they have in the past. But such is the mistrust of ICE many fans are staying away. 'What I can tell you is there are multiple reports and stats tracking how overseas travel to the United States has already plummeted since the beginning of the year because of the action by the current administration,' Mr Kennedy added. 'And FIFA has had to lower prices for these club World Cup tickets a couple of times.' With more than 70 per cent of the Miami population being Hispanic, the presence of ICE at the inaugural game is particularly sensitive. Tensions heightened Tension was further heightened earlier this week when the US coastguard boarded a boat taking people – including the mayor of Miami Dade – to a World Cup party and checked the immigration status of staff on board. Another potential flashpoint is on Monday when LAFC, one of the leading teams in the USA, whose supporters have been vocal in their opposition to ICE, plays Chelsea in Atlanta. Against the backdrop of the National Guard being called in to quell violent anti-ICE protests in the club's home city of Los Angeles, feelings have been running high. Fans displayed banners calling for ICE's abolition, and, somewhat pointedly, they have been backed by the club, which wrote on social media that it stood 'shoulder to shoulder with all members of our community'. Gianni Infantino, FIFA's president, played down the potential problems at a press conference earlier this week. 'No, I don't have any concerns about anything in the sense that we are very attentive on any security question. Of course, the most important thing for us is to guarantee security for all the fans who come to the games. This is our priority. This is the priority of all the authorities who are here. And we want everyone who comes to the games to pass a good moment.'
