‘Deprived' area of Glasgow to get new stretch of road

Council planners are looking at making a left-in-left-out junction in Milton at Liddesdale Terrace and Ashgill Road to alleviate the feeling of isolation in the area.
The aim is to regenerate Liddesdale Square as part of Glasgow City Council liveable neighbourhood plans. The area has been described as a 'desert' with no supermarket and secondary school.
Council official Derek Dunsire said: 'There is limited public transport that comes through Milton and there is quite a disparate number of small parades of shops that really are critical for the community. '
He added: 'As part of the heart of Milton – Liddesdale Square and Terrace – there is an opportunity to unlock Milton and create a better improved sustainable transport route from the east by actually doing a very simple left in left out junction onto Ashgill Road.'

The group manager for liveable neighbourhoods added: 'This would help with the proposed residential developments that are looking at Liddesdale Square.
'It would help with the configuration of Liddesdale Square and potentially enhance the destination of the square itself and the local retail offering.'
He said dialogue is continuing over the makeover designs.
The planned scheme is one of four liveable neighbourhood projects for Lambhill to Milton, which are at a concept design stage – RIBA stage 2.
The project would see improvements to Liddesdale Square, a new sponge park, parking spaces and cycle routes and could cost more than £3million.
A possible site for a new supermarket has been put forward for the southern edge of Liddesdale Square.

Other Lambhill to Milton projects include improving routes to Miltonbank Primary School, Milton Community Nursery and St Monica's Primary School. A shopping parade at Skirsa Street is to be transformed with 'two new mixed-use blocks and the Parkhouse disused railway corridor is lined up to become a cycle and path.
Projects in different parts of Glasgow, which are also at the same stage of concept design are: Ruchazie to Easterhouse, Knightswood to Anniesland and Cardonald to Mosspark.
A council paper said the projects 'each have high level costings prepared with optimism bias providing a valuable overview for prioritising and securing further funding.'
Councillors were presented with a report on the liveable neighbourhood projects at the environment and liveable neighbourhoods city policy committee last week.
A report presented to local politicians said: 'The continued development of the liveable neighbourhood programme represents an important contribution to council priorities. This work provides a framework, which enables transport and neighbourhood interventions which prioritise connectivity, people and place; ensuring active travel and public transport become first choice for everyday journeys.'
Local councillor Robert Mooney, Labour, has been calling for a supermarket in Milton describing it as 'one of the most deprived areas' of Glasgow, where children have to get two buses to high school.

A no mow warning has been issued after a councillor took matters into his own hands and cut the grass on a County Council and Erewash Borough Council councillor Dan Price took his own lawnmower onto the Cotmanhay roundabout at the junction of Church Street, Skeavingtons Lane, Bridge Street and Cotmanhay Road on said: "I am a hands-on councillor. I want to do things differently."The borough council said it deliberately did not mow the roundabout to encourage wildflowers and boost local wildlife - and asked residents to leave maintenance to its teams. But Price, the whip for the Reform UK group on the council, said he took action at the site near Ilkeston after "many complaints" at the overgrown island and has said he will carry out more cutting. He said: "As a father myself, the safety of our children is paramount. Children and parents shouldn't be risking their lives on the school run due to uncut grass."Drivers shouldn't need to risk their lives or the possibility of damaging their vehicles whilst using Cotmanhay island."The island was covered with tall grass and wildflowers with a mown outer circle last August, but the grass had been mown in previous years, when flower displays were planted on the roundabout. A borough council spokesperson said: "Like our residents, Erewash Borough Council takes pride in our green spaces – and keeping the area neat, tidy, and safe is our top priority."We have changed the way we manage some green areas to encourage wildflowers and boost local wildlife, as well as to ensure council resources are used effectively."We appeal to residents to leave the maintenance of public spaces to our council teams – who are specifically trained to achieve a consistent look and maximise public safety."

Plans for a two-storey nursery on the site of a Wolverhampton mosque have been approved by the backing comes after confirmation the opening hours at the Staveley House nursery would not clash with the mosque's peak-time use, the authority proposal has also been amended, to make the nursery element of the building on Great Hampton Street was "completely separate from the mosque".Permission was granted subject to conditions, including that the premises should only be used as a nursery between 08:30 and 16:00 from Monday to Friday, and not during weekends and bank/public holidays. There should also be no more than 20 children there at any one time and the number of staff would not exceed four, the authority making its decision to approve the plan, it said it had confirmed the development would be of an appropriate design, scale and appearance "that would not have an adverse impact" on the area's include making sure external materials used in the development should match those of "the existing building in size, colour, form and texture".No construction operations, including site clearance work, delivering building materials and removing waste, should take place other than between 07:00 and 09:30 and 15:00 and 17:30 from Monday to Friday and 07:00 to 09:30 on should be no such construction work on Sundays or bank/public holidays, the council said.
