Selena Quintanilla-Pérez's Family Applauds Yolanda Saldívar's Parole Denial: ‘We Are Grateful'
Selena Quintanilla-Pérez's family commended the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles' decision Thursday to deny parole for Yolanda Saldívar, the woman who was convicted of fatally shooting the legendary Tejano singer in 1995.
'Today, we are grateful that the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles has chosen to deny paroles for Yolanda Salidívar,' Quintanilla-Pérez's family and widower Chris Perez wrote in a statement on Thursday. 'While nothing can bring Selena back, this decision reaffirms that justice continues to stand for the beautiful life that was taken from us and from millions of fans around the world too soon.'
The message from the Grammy award-winning songstress' family continued, spotlighting Quintanilla-Pérez's music and generational impact.
'Selena's legacy is one of love, music and inspiration. She lived with joy, gave selflessly and continues to uplift generations with her voice and spirit,' the message went on. 'As her family and loved ones, we remain committed to preserving her memory and ensuring that her story is honored with the dignity and respect it deserves.'
The family's remarks concluded with them asking that Quintanilla-Pérez be remembered for her art rather than her heartbreaking death.
'We thank Selena's fans for their unwavering support throughout the years. Your love has been a source of strength and healing,' the statement read. 'We will continue to celebrate Selena's life — not the tragedy that took her from us — and we ask that all you cherish her to the same – the The Quintanilla Family and Chris Pérez.'
Saldívar worked as the manager of Selena Etc. and was president of Quintanilla-Pérez's fan club. She was fired by the family for allegedly embezzling money. Saldívar murdered the singer on March 31, 1995 after Quintanilla-Pérez went to Saldívar's hotel room at a Days Inn motel in Corpus Christi, Texas to retrieve business records for a tax filing. After the two got into a dispute, Saldívar shot Quintanilla-Pérez in the back with a .38-caliber revolver. Quintanilla-Pérez died from the gunshot wound an hour after being transported to a nearby hospital.
On Oct. 23, 1995, Saldívar was convicted of first-degree murder and was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 30 years. On Sunday, the now-64-year-old, was up for parole for the first time. The panel cited the violent nature of the crime as the reason Saldívar's parole was denied.
'After a thorough consideration of all available information, which included any confidential interviews conducted, it was the parole panels determination to deny parole to Yolanda Saldivar,' the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles statement read. 'The record indicates that the instant offense has elements of brutality, violence, assaultive behavior or conscious selection of victim's vulnerability indicating a conscious disregard for the lives, safety, or property of others, such that the offender poses a continuing threat to public safety.'
Following the denial, Saldívar will not be eligible for parole again until 2030.

Following the affair, Elizabeth ended her relationships with both men and a distraught Joel coped by drinking, explaining that without a place to live, he was 'depressed to the point of almost being psychotic,' he said in the documentary. 'So I figured, 'That's it. I don't want to live anymore.' I was just in a lot of pain and it was sort of like why hang out, tomorrow is going to be just like today is and today sucks. So, I just thought I'd end it all.' The film featured an appearance by Joel's sister Judy Molinari — then, a medical assistant — who explained after she gave him sleeping pills to help him get sleep, he took all of them and ended up in a coma 'for days and days and days.' 'I went to go see him in the hospital, and he was laying there white as a sheet,' a tearful Molinari said. 'I thought that I'd killed him.' When the six-time Grammy winner finally woke up, his dark thoughts returned. Describing himself as 'very selfish,' Joel said he remembers thinking he wanted to try again — but he wanted to do it 'right.' During his next spiral, the 'Honesty' singer ingested a bottle of lemon Pledge — and it was Jon who ended up rushing the musician to the hospital. 'Even though our friendship was blowing up, Jon saved my life,' recalled Joel. Joel, who has since forgiven Joel for his indiscretion, shared his own thoughts on the experience., 'He never really said anything to me,' he explained. 'The only practical answer I can give as to why Billy took it so hard was because he loved me that much and that it killed him to hurt me that much.' On Thursday, (June 5), an ex-girlfriend of Combs, who is identified as 'Jane', testified that during their three-year relationship, a majority of intimate encounters involved other men. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the woman explained that her relationship with the Harlem native began with lush vacations and only the two of them in bed. As their relationship progressed, Jane claimed it started to involve drug use and escorts as Combs initiated the 'freak offs.' She also testified that 90% of their sexual encounters involved other men. 'I just thought that it was a night of fun; I didn't think that we'd be doing it again,' she explained. 'I just wanted to satisfy my partner.' In her testimony, she further detailed how she became trapped in the relationship due to Combs providing for her financially and informed the jury, 'I felt obligated to perform because my partner was paying my rent.' According to Rolling Stone, Jane Doe returned to the stand on Friday and continued to reflect on her account during her time with the 55-year-old. 'It's dark, sleazy, and makes me feel disgusted with myself,' she claimed to have told Combs in 2023 about not wanting to participate in the freak offs. 'I don't want to play this role anymore. I'm so much more than this,' and 'I feel like it's the only reason you have me around and pay for the house.' That same year, she alleged to have agreed to participate in a 'sober' party, despite Combs still using cocaine and ecstasy. The second time she burst into tears was after a 'hotel night' while she was in the shower, high on drugs. Combs is charged with one count of racketeering conspiracy; two counts of sex trafficking by force, fraud, or coercion; and two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution, and has pleaded not guilty. Earlier this week, U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian warned the Grammy-winner that he could be removed from the courtroom for 'absolutely unacceptable' behavior after allegedly making facial expressions towards the jury. Billy Joel's first ex-wife, Elizabeth Weber, has broken her silence following the iconic musician's shocking brain disorder diagnosis. The 'Uptown Girl' hitmaker, who was married to Weber from 1973 to 1982, revealed last month that he was diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus. Following the diagnosis, Weber reflected on the pair's ill-fated marriage — saying that she always knew the so-called Piano Man would become a star. The rare disorder, which reportedly affects about 0.2% of people between the ages of 70 and 80, occurs when cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) builds up inside the skull, presses on the brain and disrupts cognitive functioning. 'Billy Joel has announced that he will be cancelling all scheduled concerts following a recent diagnosis of Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH),' the 'Only the Good Die Young' crooner's team said in a lengthy Instagram announcement on May 23. 'This condition has been exacerbated by recent concert performances, leading to problems with hearing, vision, and balance,' it continued. 'Under his doctor's instructions, Billy is undergoing specific physical therapy and has been advised to refrain from performing during this recovery period.' 'I'm sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience,' his team added, 'and thank you for understanding.' Following the news, his wife Alexis broke her silence on the diagnosis, thanking fans for the 'outpouring of love and support.'
