PM Modi arrives in Croatia on last leg of three-nation tour
Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Croatia on Wednesday (June 18, 2025) on the first-ever visit by an Indian premier, during which he will hold talks with the country's top leadership to strengthen bilateral cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
In a special gesture, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković received PM Modi at the airport.
"We welcomed Indian Prime Minister @narendramodi to Zagreb! This is the first ever visit by the Prime Minister of India - the most populous country in the world, which comes at an important geopolitical moment," Mr Plenković said on X.

He said the two countries are starting a new chapter in their relations and are creating conditions for strengthening bilateral cooperation in multiple areas and sectors.
"Marking a historic milestone in the India-Croatia relationship. PM @narendramodi lands in Zagreb, Croatia. This is the first ever visit by an Indian PM to Croatia. As a special gesture, warmly received by PM @AndrejPlenkovic at the airport with a ceremonial welcome," Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal posted on X.
Mr Modi arrived in Zagreb from Canada on the last leg of his three-nation visit. In Canada, the Prime Minister attended the G7 summit and held talks with several world leaders. He had earlier visited Cyprus as part of the tour.
During his visit, Mr Modi will hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Plenkovic and meet President Zoran Milanovic.
"I look forward to my visit to the Republic of Croatia and meetings with President Zoran Milanovic and Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic," Mr Modi said in a statement before his departure in New Delhi on Sunday (June 15, 2025).
"Both our countries enjoy centuries-old close cultural links. As the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Croatia, it will open new avenues for bilateral cooperation in areas of mutual interest," he said.
"The visit to Croatia will also underscore India's commitment to further strengthening its engagement with partners in the European Union," the Ministry of External Affairs earlier said in a statement in New Delhi.

Greater Noida: UP deputy chief minister Keshav Prasad Maurya on Wednesday said India was in a state of despair and corruption before 2014, but the leadership of Narendra Modi brought about "transformative changes". "Before 2014, we were the 13th largest economy. Today, we are the fourth and by 2027, India will become the third-largest economy. By 2048, we aim to see India as a fully developed nation," Maurya said. "Under the Congress, only 15 paise out of a rupee reached the poor. Today, the full amount of Rs 2,000 reaches farmers directly in their accounts," the deputy CM said. The BJP leader urged state officials to intensify the distribution of Ayushman Bharat health cards, which provide up to Rs 5 lakh in free medical treatment per family per year. ZAGREB: In a gesture signifying the centuries-old close cultural links between the two countries, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday received from his Croatian counterpart Andrej Plenkovic a reprint of Vezdin's Sanskrit grammar - the first printed Sanskrit grammar written in Latin in 1790 by Croatian scientist and missionary Filip Vezdin during his time spent in India. "To the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi, I handed over a reprint of Vezdin's Sanskrit grammar - the first printed Sanskrit grammar, written in Latin in 1790 by the Croatian scientist and missionary Filip Vezdin (1748-1806), based on the knowledge he gained during his stay in India from Kerala Brahmins and local manuscripts. With this pioneering work, Filip Vezdin became one of the first European scientists to seriously devote himself to Indian languages and culture. At the same time, this is a symbol of early cultural ties between Croatia and India," said Plenkovic. An Indologist of Croatian nationality, Ivan Filip Vezdin came to Malabar as a missionary in 1774 and later became the Vicar-General on the Malabar Coast. He is credited with publishing the first printed Sanskrit grammar in 1790. A plaque to commemorate him was unveiled in Trivandrum in 1999. Plenkovic also handed over a book titled 'Croatia and India, Bilateral Navigator for Diplomats and Business' to PM Modi, written by Croatian diplomat Sinise Grgica. "Grgica in a unique and comprehensive way gives a comparative view of our two countries and explores all dimensions of bilateral relations. This book reflects our achievements, as well as the potential we can still realise, and we believe that it will inspire and encourage the strengthening of our future cooperation and contribute to the further deepening of the mutual friendship between Croatia and India," said Plenkovic. Earlier, Prime Minister Modi received a rousing welcome by the vibrant Indian community in Zagreb as he began his landmark visit to Croatia - the first-ever by an Indian Prime Minister to the country - on Wednesday. Zagreb is the last stop on PM Modi's three-nation tour, which also included visits to Cyprus en route to Canada for Tuesday's G7 Summit in Kananaskis. In a special gesture, PM Modi was warmly received by Plenkovic at the Franjo Tudman Airport with a ceremonial welcome. Members of the Indian diaspora, waiting to catch a glimpse of PM Modi, were seen gathered in huge numbers as the PM's motorcade drove through the city. Hundreds of people, including locals, also gave a grand welcome to PM Modi as he arrived at his hotel. Amid chants of "Modi-Modi", "Bharat Mata Ki Jai" and "Vande Mataram", PM Modi witnessed vibrant and energy-filled cultural performances from people present at the venue.
