Report: Emma Meesseman will join the Liberty in her return to the WNBA
The timing of the arrival of the Belgium forward in the U.S. will be determined by how long it takes to get her visa, according to the person who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because no official announcement has been made.
ESPN first reported Meesseman's decision.
The two-time All-Star, who helped the Washington Mystics win the 2019 title, has been focused on leading the Belgium national team since her last season in the WNBA, which she spent with the Chicago Sky.
Meesseman helped Belgium win the EuroBasket title last month to qualify for next year's World Cup.
She joins a stacked New York team with Breanna Stewart, Jonquel Jones and Sabrina Ionescu that won its first championship last year.

Spain's Aitana Bonmatí Reacts To Losing Euros Final: 'I'm a bit in shock'
Being the most skillful and technically best team at the UEFA Women's Euros wasn't enough to get Spain the title on Sunday. The 2023 World Cup winner and 2024 UEFA Nations League title holder still does not have a European title for its stellar generation after a penalty shootout loss to England in the final after a 1-1 draw after extra time. Spain trailed for just four minutes' play across six games in the entire tournament. England led for barely five minutes' play in its three knockout rounds games – and none against Spain. "We were the best team of the tournament, but sometimes that's not enough," Spain star Aitana Bonmatí said. Bonmatí cut a sad figure walking to the trophy ceremony platform to collect her trophy as the best player of the tournament, which she began days after being hospitalized with a bout of viral meningitis. Bonmatí's spot kick in the shootout was one of two saved by England goalkeeper Hannah Hampton. Mariona Caldentey, whose 25th-minute headed goal seemed to set Spain on track for victory, also had her penalty saved. Caldentey also went close to scoring a second time in the first half, in which tournament top scorer Esther Gonzalez had three chances to score. Early in the second half, Caldentey's Arsenal teammates Chloe Kelly and Alessia Russo combined to level the score on Russo's header. "I'm a bit in shock," Bonmatí said. "It was cruel. We played better, created more scoring chances, but in soccer sometimes that's not enough. It all came down to the penalties." "I'm sorry for my miss," said two-time Ballon d'Or winner Bonmatí, whose teammates Caldentey and Alexia Putellas also failed from the spot in a 2-0 quarterfinal win over Switzerland. "I think this team deserved more. At least not living with this bitter feeling," Spain coach Montse Tomé said in translated comments. Spain captain Irene Paredes said it was "hard to look for the positives so soon. Right now, it's a very tough moment." "England were happy just to reach penalties but, in the shootout, we didn't perform well," said Paredes, whose Barcelona team also lost the Women's Champions League final in May to an English opponent, Arsenal. "To be a champion you need some luck, and I believe they had it." Spain still is a world champion and will soon prepare to start qualifying for the defense of its title. The 2027 World Cup is being played in Brazil. "We will be back," Bonmatí said. "There will be a World Cup in a couple of years, and that's our goal now. This is a golden generation, with a lot of young players." Reporting by The Associated Press. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox? X-Ray Results Are In For WNBA Star Breanna Stewart
X-Ray Results Are In For WNBA Star Breanna Stewart originally appeared on The Spun. Saturday's game was worrisome for the New York Liberty and their fans after seven-time All-Star Breanna Stewart exited with what appeared to a lower leg injury in the first quarter of the team's 101-99 loss to the LA Sparks. It wasn't clear in the moment what caused to the two-time MVP to be in pain but whatever it was it was enough for Stewart to motion towards the bench to get her out of the game and she never returned. The Liberty just got Jonquel Jones back so having Stewie out of the lineup would be a massive loss for the reigning WNBA champs. Stewart has barely missed any time since coming to Brooklyn. But she did tear her Achilles back in 2019 before having to undergo a touch-up operation a few seasons later. The New York Post's Madeline Kenney had a positive update on Sunday though, with the result of Stewart's recent X-rays: "Breanna Stewart had imaging done on her right leg which showed she avoided significant injury after exiting last night's game," Kenney reported. "She'll be with the Liberty on this four-game road trip, but the team plans to give her time to fully recover." Hopefully Breanna is able to make a full and quick recovery and doesn't miss too much time with a grueling 12-game stretch coming up. The Liberty finish out the month with games against Dallas Wings and Minnesota Lynx on Monday and Wednesday after posting an Eastern Conference leading 17-7 record to this point.X-Ray Results Are In For WNBA Star Breanna Stewart first appeared on The Spun on Jul 27, 2025 This story was originally reported by The Spun on Jul 27, 2025, where it first appeared.

Sandy Brondello dubs Leonie Fiebich ‘most pure shooter' she's ever seen
The post Sandy Brondello dubs Leonie Fiebich 'most pure shooter' she's ever seen appeared first on ClutchPoints. It's too early to say if the New York Liberty have fully pulled out of their tailspin, but the team has won three of its last four games. Over the past week, Leonie Fiebich has been a major reason why. Fiebich had her best game of the season on Sunday in the Liberty's 79-72 comeback win over the Atlanta Dream, scoring 21 points on 8-9 shooting from the field and going 4-5 from three. Her performance was enough to earn high praise from her head coach, Sandy Brondello. 'We're encouraging her to shoot, obviously,' Brondello said after the game. 'I put her in the actions there cause she's the most pure shooter I've ever seen, and with her size at 6'4, her ability to come off a screen and just get balance and shoot it. It's beautiful.' Fiebich was a revelation last season as one of the best rookies in the WNBA. She quickly forced her way into the starting lineup and was a crucial player down the stretch as the Liberty captured their first championship in franchise history. This season, Fiebich got off to a slower start, joining the team just before the season opener when her overseas commitments ended. After scoring 20 total points through her first five games, she turned a corner to end May, putting in a 12-point, nine-rebound and three-block performance against the Washington Mystics. But even then, it was difficult for her to get into a groove, as she left to participate in EuroBasket in early June. The Liberty went 2-5 in her absence, with her return coinciding with the start of the team's recent 3-1 streak. 'If you haven't worked that out yet, I love everything about Leo and what she brings to this team,' Brondello added. 'She's the ultimate professional, how she comes ready to play and selfless.' Liberty forward Leonie Fiebich is showing her versatility Fiebich may be the most 'pure shooter' that her coach has ever seen, but she can do far more than shoot. In fact, when she's not scoring, Fiebich has made a gigantic impact defensively. Brondello had been critical of her team's defensive effort throughout its losing streak, but when Fiebich returned from EuroBasket, it became immediately clear that she is a difference-maker on that end. At 6'4, Fiebich has the length and versatility to guard anywhere on the court and has made a habit of getting into passing lanes or just disrupting the flow of the opponent's offense. 'She takes pride in defense, loves defense, so we love players like that, but we're gonna continue to grow on that offensive side,' Brondello said. From Fiebich's perspective, she likes defense because it's something she can control. As she explained, some nights her shot just isn't going to fall. Luck isn't nearly as much of a factor on the other end. 'If you go into a game with an offensive mindset, you never know if your shot's gonna fall or not,' she said. 'You never know if you will get the calls, and on defense you always know what you have to do, the aggression you play with and the intensity, that's just something you can control. I just don't want to rely on the uncontrollables on offense.' Related: Why the Liberty must sign Emma Meesseman
