United Airlines flyer details rookie mistake that cost them almost $100 instantly
The absence of a simple 'back' button on United Airlines' website cost a Canadian traveler nearly $100 while booking flights for her family. The traveler, who shared her story in a Reddit post, was booking tickets that were due to cost #295 when she realized she needed to modify the seat selection. But without a back button, she had to cancel the cart and start over. The same tickets had jumped $30 within minutes after entering all her flight details again. Still hoping for a fix, she tried searching on another computer — only to see the fare rise again, this time to $362. 'On United's website, there is no 'back' button,' she wrote. 'So I basically had to cancel the cart item and redo all the steps.' She concluded the spike, on July 31, was likely due to demand — a suspicion echoed by fellow Reddit users, many of whom shared similar experiences. 'If it makes you feel any better, I made a $500 mistake similar to that,' one traveler replied. Others chimed in with advice and critiques. 'The system might not have released the inventory you held, back into the pool right away. Why didn't you just change the seats after booking,' a commenter wrote. 'It's a demand issue,' another added. 'If there are multiple searches for the same flight, the prices start increasing.'. One traveler said they nearly made a $1,600 mistake by misunderstanding a change fee. 'I thought it was $320 total to move our family's return flight up by four hours,' they wrote. 'Turns out it was $320 per ticket. Thankfully, I called and got everything refunded.' Others noted that United will often refund the fare difference in credit if the price drops after booking. United has faced growing criticism in 2025 for several unpopular changes that have led some travelers to jump ship. The company faced backlash after quietly reinstating a pricing policy that charges solo passengers more than those traveling in pairs or groups. Reddit user chimedon how a quirk on United's website cost a Canadian traveler nearly $100 while booking flights for her family. Data indicated the airline is applying at least an eight percent price hike for solo travelers on weekdays. It also ignited fury by narrowing its check-in cutoff window. Since June, instead of the 30-minute cutoff, all United flyers must check in for domestic flights at least 45 minutes before takeoff. Meanwhile, United continues pushing luxury on international routes. Its new Polaris Studio suites, launching this year on flights from San Francisco to London and Singapore. The suites will include perks such as Cuvée Rosé and designer hoodie pajamas, and will include Wi-Fi from Starlink, a service developed by the Elon Musk 's SpaceX.

August 10 - Corbin Carroll homered for the third straight game, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. drove in three runs and had a walkoff double in the ninth, and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Colorado Rockies 6-5 in Phoenix on Saturday. Geraldo Perdomo doubled with one out in the ninth off Jimmy Herget (0-2) and scored on Gurriel's double, which one-hopped the wall in left field and gave rookie right-hander Andrew Hoffman (1-0) his first major league win in his sixth appearance. Carroll tied his career high with 25 homers and has four in the last seven games. His game-tying shot in the fifth was measured at an estimated 437 feet. Brenton Doyle had two hits including a homer and Ezequiel Tovar had two hits and an RBI for the Rockies, who have lost six in a row and have been outscored 66-17 in the stretch. Perdomo had three hits and scored twice, Ketel Marte had two hits and scored twice, and Gurriel and Blaze Alexander had two hits apiece for the Diamondbacks, who have won five of seven. Marte is 14 for 30 with two homers and nine RBIs against Colorado this season. Arizona starter Eduardo Rodriguez gave up five runs on six hits in 5 1/3 innings, with five walks and two strikeouts. Three of his walks scored. Colorado starter Bradley Blalock gave up five runs on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings, with four strikeouts and three walks. Two of his three walks scored. Tovar walked, stole second and scored on rookie Warming Bernabel's single in the third. Marte doubled in a run and Gurriel hit a sacrifice fly as the D-Backs cut the deficit to 4-3 in the third. Carroll's homer triggered a two-run fifth capped by Adrian Del Castillo's two-out, run-scoring double for a 5-4 lead. Rodriguez, in line for the victory, walked Farmer with one out in the sixth before being replaced by Juan Burgos, who gave up Tovar's single to tie the game at 5-5. --Field Level Media

Vikings' JJ McCarthy makes emotional return after missing rookie year... but it's his backup who thrills fans
Nearly one year after tearing the meniscus in his rightknee, Minnesota Vikings quarterback JJ McCarthy made his emotional return tothe field for Saturday's preseason opener against the Houston Texans. 'I had a little teardrop, I'm not going to lie,' McCarthysaid after the Vikings' 20-10 victory. 'Being out there before the nationalanthem. This game is the best game in the world and to be out there with thiskind of group, with this coaching staff ... it was absolutely terrific. 'I was actually getting kind of emotional last night,'McCarthy said. 'It's just the journey any injured player goes on to being backout there doing the thing that they love. It was really special [today], forsure.' Unfortunately for the former Michigan star, national championand first-round pick, it was his backup, Sam Howell, who had fans talking afterwards. McCarthy, 22, played just the Vikings' opening drive, completing 4 of 7 passes to set up a field goal. The 24-year-old Howell, meanwhile, completed 11 of 13 passesfor 105 yards. Best of all, the former North Carolina star engineered a 94-yardscoring driver that ended with a QB sneak for the touchdown. 'Sam had the better game for sure,' one fan wrote on X. 'If JJ struggles, Howell will absolutely ball out in that system,' another added. 'No doubt in my mind.' To be clear, McCarthy did not look bad. After receiving a rousing ovation from the home crowd as he stepped under center for the first time, he completed his first four passes, three to Jordan Addison, who made a sliding grab for an 18-yard gain on one. McCarthy, the 10th overall pick last year out of Michigan, also ran 8 yards for a first down on fourth-and-4 at the Texans 43. 'I love the fact that we were able to execute and hit an explosive in the play-pass game,' head coach Kevin O'Connell said of the drive. 'I love the fact that we converted some third downs. I loved the fact that on fourth down, he used his legs to steal one. 'I think there's a level of composure and poise to how he ran the show today that was exactly what I was looking for. And now we go back to work.' The work resumes when the Vikings hold two days of joint practices with the New England Patriots later this week, and McCarthy said there is still plenty he can improve on. 'Continuing to master the offense and really understand the timing and rhythm of each play,' McCarthy said. 'All the little things like footwork and how I'm getting out of my fakes. Just little stuff. 'This is an extremely hard offense to run, but once you master it, things run really smoothly.' With Sam Darnold under center, the Vikings finished the regular season last year 14-3 before falling to the Los Angeles Rams in the wild-card round of the NFC playoffs. But Darnold departed for the Seattle Seahawks this offseason in free agency and O'Connell has turned the offense over to McCarthy.
