I think I first tasted the long crimson pepper at the Union Square Greenmarket in New York in 2017. Every summer since, I've noticed it pop up as a special on menus, which has made me wonder more than once: Is this the new ramp? Slender like cayennes but sweet like bells, they're often twisted, twirled or hooked. You might compare them to Cubanelles or Lombardos, but this particular pepper — the Jimmy Nardello — is a distinct variety. Its seeds are among those preserved by the nonprofit Seed Savers Exchange.

Prayers are pouring in after a "horrific" train crash outside of Chicago took five lives on Wednesday evening heading into Thursday morning. A train and a vehicle carrying five people collided in Gary, Indiana on Wednesday evening. The South Shore Line eastbound train 133 was approaching the intersection of US 12 and 7th Street, when a vehicle traveling southbound went around the train gates and onto the track. It was struck by the oncoming train, killing all five people inside of the vehicle. Prayers are pouring in for the friends and family members of the victims. South Shore Line President Mike Noland issued a statement. "Putting aside the fact we always want people to be extremely careful around trains and train tracks and to expect a train on a track at any time - there is a tragedy when five human beings are lost and our hearts go out to the family of the loved ones who experienced loss in this accident," Noland said. CBS News had more: According to South Shore Line President Mike Noland, the train with 32 passengers was approaching the intersection of US 12 and 7th Street when a vehicle with five occupants traveling southbound on 7th Street went around the gates and into the train's path. The Gary Police Department confirmed all five people inside the vehicle died. The identities of the victims were not released as of Thursday. Prayers are pouring in for their friends and family members. "Prayers and condolences to their families," one fan wrote. "Heartbreaking loss. RIP," one fan added. "This happens often. Maybe make gates so they can't be bypassed," another fan suggested. Our thoughts are with the friends and family members of the victims on Thursday. May they rest in peace. I dread telling fragile mom I'm moving out. Give advice to this Hax question.
Carolyn Hax can't get to every question she receives, so every week we ask readers to think like an advice columnist and submit their advice. Out of the many great responses we receive, we select a few standouts to publish on Wednesdays. Previous reader questions have been about worries for a daughter dating someone much older, finding hope after being cheated on and whether a boyfriend's disdain for dogs is a dealbreaker. No matter the question, Carolyn's readers always show up with thoughtful and useful advice. You can read last week's question and responses here.
