370 Auckland nurses refusing to take on call shifts in protest over pay, chronic understaffing

The strike began on May 26 and would run until June 23. Affected hospitals included Auckland City, Starship and Greenlane.

Health New Zealand's latest offer of a yearly one percent rise - over two years - was "preposterous".
He said perioperative nurses would be there for loss of life or high priority cases, but they needed to pressure Health NZ to ensure the on call system was not being used to cover staff shortages.
"What is happening - in some areas of the system - is that shifts end at, say, 5pm but staff who are on call are being used to run longer lists that go beyond the cut-off time.
"So they've already worked their full shift and then they have to stay or then they're called back to finish the regular work of the day," Ainsworth said.
Health NZ began renegotiating its collective agreement with New Zealand Nurses Organisation in September 2024.
But - after little progress was made during bargaining earlier in the year - the Employment Relations Authority were called in to facilitate the process.
They found there was no reason to question the economic rationale behind the offer nor was there a rationale to support seeking further funding from the government.
Ainsworth said the authority's stance was "disappointing".
"They basically said 'look the government's got no money. You should just take the one percent and be happy'. As every New Zealander knows a one percent increase doesn't keep track with the cost of living or inflation.
"It would mean some of us - not all of us - would maybe get an extra $1000 a year," Ainsworth said.

But Health New Zealand Northern Region deputy chief executive Mike Shepherd said the perioperative nurses were asking to be paid more than colleagues in similar roles about the country.
He said he was unsure why the perioperative nurses were taking action ahead of the current national bargaining process with the Nurses Union.
"We have a great respect for the work they do and we absolutely value that.
"If they stay late for a shift they get paid overtime. If they get called back they get paid a minimum of three hours double time so I think they are getting remunerated for returning to work for these acute cases," Shepherd said.
He said the perioperative vacancy rates were currently less than four percent and some of those roles were being held open to accommodate new graduate nurses.
"This is not an area where we have large vacancies. We obviously have day to day staffing challenges like any large business and 24 hour business does, but I think that we provide a good environment and we really value our teams," Shepherd said.

Photo: RNZ / Ruth Hill A former birthing centre in Lower Hutt, which was controversially mothballed four years ago due to lack of funding, will house an expanded after-hours medical service. Lower Hutt After-Hours Medical Centre - the only drop-in clinic for more than 100,000 Hutt Valley residents - is often forced to close its doors early to new patients, because it is unable to see everyone before 10pm closing time. Manager Mark O'Connor said the shift to new premises at the former Te Awakairangi Birthing Centre at the end of July would help alleviate some of the pressure. "The new clinic has 10 consultancy rooms, instead of the three-and-a-half we have now, and its waiting room is triple the size," he said. "Patients may still have to wait, but at least they won't be queuing in the wind and the rain, as they are now sometimes." The centre had also received Government funding to extend its opening hours to "daylight hours" during the week. Currently, its hours are limited to 5.30-10pm, Monday to Friday, and 8-10pm on weekends and public holidays. From late this year or early next year, it was planned to open from 8am every day. "Until now, Hutt Valley has been the only metropolitan area without daytime urgent care, so that's a big change," he said. "We never had the facility before here. "If you know our old building, we would never have been able to cope with that during the day, but with this new facility, it gives us that opportunity. We just have to resource it." Recruitment of additional staff could be a challenge, but the attraction of a new clinic would help with that. Photo: RNZ / Ruth Hill "We need to close at 10pm, because most of my doctors are working at practices during the day, so we can't keep them too long." The new clinic was also upstairs from a radiology centre, which meant patients with suspected fractures would no longer need to go to Hutt Hospital's emergency department. Frustrated patients have taken to social media to complain about the clinic closing early. One woman - who was turned away last Friday, after trying to get an appointment with her own GP all week - said the doctor shortage was the biggest barrier. "If they can fit more people into the premises, but they don't have more doctors to do the hours, then they're going to have the same problems." A plan to turn the old Te Awakairangi Birthing Centre into a special care unit was developed when Labour was in power and was heavily supported by then-MP Chris Bishop. The birthing centre, which was owned by a charitable trust, closed in 2021. Te Whatu Ora took over the facility and planned to open a first-of-its-kind transitional care unit for sick babies in 2023, but this never happened. Te Pāti Māori MP Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke was suspended for seven days - but had also been punished with a 24-hour suspension on the day over a haka all three had performed in Parliament, against the Treaty Principles Bill, in November. It is against the rules of the House for members to leave their seats during a debate - which all three did. Ngarewa-Packer told Saturday Morning that the 21-day suspension, which was seven times harsher than any previous sanction an MP has faced, was not proportionate. "I think the backlash from the public, nationally and internationally, validates that," she said. Previously, the longest suspension for an MP had been three days, given to the former prime minister Robert Muldoon for criticising the speaker in the 1980s. While New Zealand First leader Winston Peters said the duration of the suspension would have been lessened if the Te Pāti Māori MPs had apologised, Ngarewa-Packer said that was never requested by the Privileges Committee. "What we have here is a situation where, and some are calling it Trumpism, we've been a lot more specific - we have an Atlas agenda that has not only crept in, it's stormed in on the shores of Aotearoa and some may not understand what that means, but this is just the extension of the attack on the treaty, on the attack on Indigenous voices. "We made the point the whole way through when we started to see that they weren't going to be able to meet us halfway on anything, even a quarter of the way, on any of the requests for tikanga experts, for legal experts when we knew the bias of the committee." Ngarewa-Packer added that the Privileges Committee process was not equipped to deal with the issue. "We hit a nerve and we can call it a colonial nerve, we can call it institutional nerve... "I think that this will be looked back on at some stage and say how ridiculous we looked back in 2025." Ngarewa-Packer also added that the language from Peters during the debate on Thursday was "all very deliberate" - "and that's what we're contending with in Aotearoa". "Everyone should have a view but don't use the might of legislation and the power to be able to assert your racism and assert your anti-Māori, anti-Treaty agenda." Peters had taken aim at Waititi on Thursday as "the one in the cowboy hat" and "scribbles on his face" in reference to his mataora moko. Rawiri Waititi. "They told the media they were going to do it, but they didn't tell the Speaker did they?" Peters added that Te Pāti Māori were "a bunch of extremists" and that "New Zealand has had enough of them". The short answer is it depends. Photo: RNZ I was wondering, is it better to invest more in your KiwiSaver or into your mortgage? We are lucky and have a little bit of extra cash every pay, so we have been making additional mortgage repayments. With the upcoming changes to KiwiSaver, we won't be able to continue to do this if we don't opt out. What is the better option? My thinking is the lower the mortgage, the less interest we pay, which would see us better off in the long term. Fisher Funds Kiwisaver general manager David Boyle says he has received questions like this over the years and the answer is: "it depends". "It's hard to know, without knowing the total financial position and how long they've got until they retire," he said. "Paying more off your mortgage and contributing to KiwiSaver are both smart choices, if you find yourself with a bit of money leftover before payday. "To help with this here are some things they should consider if they keep paying a bit more off the mortgage." It's probably worth talking to a financial adviser about this. If you opt to focus on paying your mortgage faster, you might need a plan to get you on track for retirement, once that loan is gone. The increase to contributions of 4 percent is stepped over the next couple of years. Are you likely to receive a pay rise over that period that will help you continue paying a bit off your mortgage, as well as contribute a bit more? You also have the option to temporarily lower your contribution rate back to 3 percent if you want. I am the epitome of being a victim of the government's totally unfair direct deduction policy. I should have started receiving my richly deserved superannuation when I qualified for it 9.5 years ago and the Winter Energy Payments seven years ago when they began. Consequently, over $300,000 has been stolen from me and I live in abject poverty as a result. I am a dual citizen from America. I have lived here 19.5 years, so on what legal basis has the government for denying the WEPs? Its written explanation is that it would be difficult to administer to NZ seniors not currently receiving a government benefit such as superannuation. That is mind boggling and I hope you see fit to write about this outrageous treatment of nearly 100,000 Kiwi seniors. Sorry, yes, I've checked with the ministry and it confirms that people who are not getting NZ Super because of an overseas pension cannot get the Winter Energy Payment. Generally, if your NZ Super entitlement has been eliminated by your overseas pension, it's because what you receive from overseas is more than the NZ Super payment.
