Coarse angling world championship coming to Cork
Coachford will be epicentre for the two-day event which is expected to generate a vital cash injection from the visiting competitors along with their friends and families as anglers are traditionally big spenders in local hotels, B&Bs, pubs and restaurants.
The world championships float fishing event for the representatives of the angling clubs in their countries will take place on July 26/27.
The event is being hosted by the National Coarse Fishing Federation of Ireland (NCFFI) on the Inniscarra reservoir at Coachford.
Representing Ireland will be BSI Sensas AC and the CM Lakelands Club who will be hoping for a podium finish on home waters.
It is the 44th such world championships and the event will be hosted in partnership with the ESB, Cork County Council, and Inland Fisheries Ireland.
Many of the elite team members recently travelled to the Inniscarra venue to check it out.
Before the fishermen cast off there will be a 'Parade of Nations' with the anglers marching through Coachford on Monday, July 21. It will coincide with a family-friendly event.
It is anticipated that the event will generate more than 2,000 bed nights for the region, providing a welcome boost to local businesses and also reinforcing Inniscarra's reputation as a world-class angling destination.
The event is expected to be covered by a number of TV fishing channels, which will hopefully increase its profile and entice more foreign anglers to visit.
Suzanne Campion, the acting chief executive of Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI), said the angling sector contributes almost €1bn to the Irish economy every year and supports over 11,000 Irish jobs and this event 'will provide a significant and welcome boost to the local economy".
The competition will take place along a stretch of the reservoir which includes the panoramic 2,8km linear park and the Coachford Greenway, which has Sport Ireland National Trails status.
The organisers are appealing for volunteers to sign up as stewards for the event saying they need in the region of 120 people to aid monitoring the activities of the anglers and keep a note of the fish caught.

Dunne reflects on Henry handball and THAT Russia performance
Richard Dunne had plenty of standout moments throughout his footballing career. Whether it was captaining Manchester City or leading Ireland to the European Championships with his no-nonsense defending, Dunne reached heights that have been somewhat lacking for the Boys in Green since his retirement. However, one of the most disappointing nights of his career is one that Ireland fans remember all too well. After Ireland forced France to extra-time on their own turf, a place in the 2010 FIFA World Cup seemed a real possibility against all odds. However, with the match looking like it could head to penalties, a moment that has lived in infamy ever since occurred. When a long ball into the Irish box was slightly overhit and heading out for a goal-kick, Thierry Henry slipped into a blind spot for the referee, blatantly controlled it with his hand and tapped it across for William Gallas to head home. Despite the disbelief from Ireland's players, the referee was none the wiser and the tie finished 2-1 to France on aggregate. Dunne was of course in the penalty box when the incident occurred and he has reflected that while anger and disappointment were the predominant feelings at the time, ultimately they just had to get on with it. You know that a decision has gone against you so there is a bit of that (robbed feelings), but as professional players you deal with it and move on. He drew the 'Iron Curtain' across Ireland's goal and with the help of Shay Given, his defensive heroics earned an invaluable point that ultimately led Ireland to Euro 2012. When asked if he knew what an immense performance he was putting on at the time, Dunne remarked 'probably not' and added that while as a player you have a feeling if you're playing well, it was 'just a 0-0 draw in Russia' at the end of the day. He said: 'It was good and it's nice that it's something to be remembered by and I've obviously still got the scars from it. 'It's just of those things that follows you around I suppose.' 'I think it's tough to really understand it. It's just one of those things that happened and you're really proud of it. 'It's just a nice memory to have.'

Evan Ferguson 'could stay forever' as he settles into Roman holiday
Even Ferguson hasn't ruled out extending his spell in Italy, saying that he could possibly 'stay forever.' The Irish striker joined Italian giants Roma from Brighton and Hove Albion on loan this summer and has already made a huge impact in preseason scoring a number of goals to endear himself to the Roman faithful. After a frustrating couple of seasons, the youngster, who doesn't turn 21 until October, is looking to get his career back up and running, and after a few short weeks in Italy, he is considering extending his stay beyond the season. 'We're just getting started, we never know what might happen in the future. Now I'm just thinking about doing well here, maybe I could even stay here forever,' Ferguson told Italian media. After bursting onto the scene with Brighton in 2023, Ferguson has seen his stock fall. Goals have been hard to come by, with the 2024/2025 season proving to be particularly difficult for the Bettystown native as he completely fell out of favour with the Seagulls before making no impact while on loan at West Ham under former manager Graham Potter. 'It was a tough year. For the first six months I had to deal with an ankle injury, then I decided to go to West Ham. It didn't go the way I wanted, but now I feel very good physically.' With those issues behind him, Ferguson is looking forward to getting back to what he does best, and he has already set himself a lofty goal for the campaign ahead. 'How many goals would I like to score? I don't usually think about an exact number of goals. I definitely want to score in every game, even though I know it's not easy. Twenty goals? Let's hope so…' With six goals scored during preseason, Ferguson will be hoping his goalscoring touch remains sharp when Roma get their Serie A campaign underway at home to Bologna on August 23rd.
