US Senator Josh Hawley launched a probe into Facebook parent Meta Platforms artificial intelligence policies on Friday, demanding documents on rules that had allowed its artificial intelligence chatbots to "engage a child in conversations that are romantic or sensual."Both Democrats and Republicans in Congress have expressed alarm over the rules outlined in an internal Meta document first reported by Reuters on Thursday.Hawley, a Republican from Missouri, chairs the Senate subcommittee on crime and counterterrorism, which will investigate "whether Meta's generative-AI products enable exploitation, deception, or other criminal harms to children, and whether Meta misled the public or regulators about its safeguards," he said in a letter to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg "We intend to learn who approved these policies, how long they were in effect, and what Meta has done to stop this conduct going forward," Hawley said.Meta declined to comment on Hawley's letter on Friday. The company said previously that "the examples and notes in question were and are erroneous and inconsistent with our policies, and have been removed."In addition to documents outlining those changes and who authorized them, Hawley sought earlier drafts of the policies along with internal risk reports, including on minors and in-person meetups. Reuters reported on Thursday about a retired man who died while traveling to New York on the invitation of a Meta chatbot.Meta must also disclose what it has told regulators about its generative AI protections for young users or limits on medical advice, according to Hawley's letter.Hawley has often criticized Big Tech. He held a hearing in April on Meta's alleged attempts to gain access to the Chinese market which were referenced in a book by former Facebook executive Sarah Wynn-Williams.

More customers now rely on social media platforms for financial decisions

Consumers are increasingly turning to social media platforms to make big money decisions. One out of two financial services customers view personal finance and investment content across digital platforms owned by US tech giant Meta. A key driver of this trend is the rising appetite for financial content in short form videos and reels. At least 53 per cent of users on Facebook and 57 per cent on Instagram say that such media formats influence financial decision making, according to a joint survey by Meta and Ipsos, a global market research company. This comes at a time when about eight out of ten users utilise Meta-owned platforms to discover, evaluate and eventually buy a financial services product such as loans, insurance, savings or investments. Digital touchpoints continue to dominate the landscape. Eight digital touchpoints are bifurcated into six digital and two offline. Out of the six digital ones, three belong to users on their financial services purchase leads to better engagement with the products, the survey found. One of two watched related videos for additional information, nearly two of three engaged with the content via comments or discussions, and one of two clicked on ads to know more about the purchase.

Ukraine must give up land to Russia, Truth Social post amplified by Donald Trump says

US President Donald Trump on Sunday amplified a controversial message on his Truth Social platform that suggested Ukraine should be prepared to surrender some of its land to Russia. The post also cautioned that Kyiv's refusal to do so could result in heavier territorial losses in the future. "Ukraine must be willing to lose some territory to Russia otherwise the longer the war goes on they will keep losing even more land!" the post read. The repost came as US officials and European allies continued intensive talks on possible frameworks for peace. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Saturday that American officials had held discussions with national security advisers from several European nations to explore security arrangements for Ukraine that could eventually be presented to Moscow. Rubio, speaking to Fox News, noted that the meeting followed Friday's direct talks between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. He said the discussions had 'narrowed the number of key issues,' citing disputed borders, Ukraine's potential military alliances, and long-term security guarantees as the most pressing matters. 'There's a lot of work that remains,' he added. According to Reuters, sources familiar with the Trump-Putin talks indicated that proposals on the table included Russia giving up small, occupied areas in return for Ukraine formally ceding fortified eastern territory, while freezing the battle lines elsewhere. Live Events Rubio, however, cautioned that neither side could expect a total victory at the negotiating table. 'If one side gets everything they want, that's not a peace deal. It's called surrender, and I don't think this is a war that's going to end anytime soon on the basis of surrender,' he told CNN.

'US keeps eye on India-Pak situation everyday': Marco Rubio on ceasefire; 'complication of truce is maintaining them'

US secretary of state Marco Rubio on Sunday claimed that the States monitors the India-Pakistan situation "every single day", after repeated claims by Donald Trump of having brokered a ceasefire between the two nations. Speaking to NBC news, Rubio said, 'One of the complications of ceasefires is maintaining them, which is very difficult. Every single day, we are keeping an eye on what is happening between Pakistan & India.' This comes a day before Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's visit to White House as the war-torn nations hopes for a peace deal with Russia. Earlier in the day, Trump exuded confidence ahead of the meeting, posting "BIG PROGRESS ON RUSSIA. STAY TUNED!" He again claimed of have stopped six wars. "If I got Russia to give up Moscow as part of the Deal, the Fake News, and their PARTNER, the Radical Left Democrats, would say I made a terrible mistake and a very bad deal. That's why they are the FAKE NEWS! Also, they should talk about the 6 WARS, etc., I JUST STOPPED!!!" Trump posted. India has dismissed the claims of any third party intervention in India-Pakistan truce after the two nation launched military operations against each other in the wake of Pahalgam terror attack.
