How Singapore businesses are scrambling to stay open amid the new Covid-19 wave

SINGAPORE, May 15 — A recent spike in Covid-19 cases in Singapore has prompted some businesses to reactivate contingency plans to deal with staff shortages and safeguard customer health.
From Apr 27 to May 3, Singapore recorded an estimated 14,200 Covid-19 cases, up from 11,100 the week before, according to health authorities.
According to a Channel News Asia report, restaurants and transport firms have responded by hiring part-time staff, intensifying cleaning measures, and providing protective equipment to their employees.
At House of Seafood in Punggol, two chefs tested positive for Covid-19, creating a staffing crunch ahead of the busy Mother's Day weekend.
To cope, the restaurant sought skilled part-time chefs with similar experience to maintain the quality of its popular crab dishes, according to supervisor Feng Ying.
However, Feng said these chefs came at a premium.
'We need to raise the salary, by about 50 per cent more than usual, in order to hire them,' she was quoted as saying.
The restaurant also ramped up cleaning protocols, engaging professional sanitisation services for deep cleaning of kitchen areas and common surfaces.
Disinfection efforts at the eatery have doubled to four times daily, focusing on high-touch areas like door handles and toilets.
Transport firm SG Bus Charter Travel & Tours has also intensified cleaning while continuing to equip its drivers with N95 masks, which have been standard since the pandemic began.
Its director, Dinesh Dhillon, said the company has flexible work arrangements and daily driver schedules that can be reshuffled quickly in the event of Covid-related absences.
'When ... two or three or maybe four or five drivers come down ... we'll just reshuffle the whole schedule,' he said.

Jetstar Asia cancelled seven flights from Changi Airport on June 11 and re-timed another seven more. - Photo: ST SINGAPORE: Fin Guo was scheduled to fly home to Singapore from Okinawa at 9.20am on Wednesday (June 11), but the night before he was due to head to the airport, he was notified that his Jetstar Asia flight would be delayed by over 12 hours. Because of the delay, the 38-year-old will land in Singapore at 2.30am on June 12 – just hours before he's due at work at 9am. The budget carrier is the only airline that offers a direct flight between Okinawa and Singapore, so Mr Guo, who works in advertising, could only sit and wait. 'Now I'm typing this in Naha Airport,' he said to The Straits Times in a text message. 'I just want to fly back to Singapore tonight.' Guo was among thousands of passengers who were affected by flight delays or cancellations following the surprise announcement on June 11 that Jetstar Asia would cease operations from July 31. The airline cancelled seven flights from Changi Airport on June 11 and re-timed another seven more. Aside from disrupted travel plans, other affected passengers also told ST that they found it difficult to get refunds for flight bookings. In a June 11 statement, the Singapore-based airline announced that it would close, citing rising costs and growing regional competition. ST understands that Jetstar Asia had decided to suspend flights at Changi Airport on the morning of June 11, so its crew would not receive the news of the airline's closure while in the air. Heather Cher had her family's flight to Penang on June 11 delayed by eight hours, from 7.25am to 3.25pm. 'We lost a day, because we'll reach only at the end of the day. It's a waste of time,' she said. The 50-year-old said she was disappointed by Jetstar's closure. She frequently takes the airline to Penang to visit relatives. Gary Cheong said he and his family woke up at 5am on June 11 to leave for the airport, not knowing that their flight had been re-timed. He had missed the e-mail Jetstar sent on June 10 that their flight to Penang had been re-timed. 'They should have let us know through SMS since it's urgent,' said the 58-year-old, who works as an assistant manager. Jetstar Asia's closure will mean one less option for Cheong and his family, who travel to Penang at least four times a year. The airline's closure came as a surprise to many passengers, including Ms Hayley P and her husband. They had booked a direct flight to Labuan Bajo on July 27. The route was recently released by the carrier. On June 11, they were informed that the flight has since been cancelled, and they would receive a refund within seven days. 'I'm hoping they follow through with an easy process and people don't need to chase,' she said. The 42-year-old floral stylist will now have to make a longer trip, since she has to fly through Bali, which will mean additional flights and two nights of accommodation. The changes come at a significant expense, she said. Some other passengers such as Charlotte Tan, 38, are worried that they will have difficulty getting refunds. Tan has over S$500 in travel vouchers with the airline from a flight cancellation in 2023 and said she was concerned about getting her money back. 'I just hope that there is some clarity soon,' she said. Consumers Association of Singapore (Case) president Melvin Yong urged passengers to approach the consumer watchdog if they require assistance. KUALA LUMPUR: Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) finance ministers will launch a new roadmap to replace the Cebu Action Plan this October. Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying said the new roadmap will define the priorities of the Apec Finance Ministers' Process (FMP) over the next five years. 'It will identify the FMP's medium-term initiatives and deliverables towards the achievement of Apec's Putrajaya Vision 2040 of an open, dynamic, resilient and peaceful Asia-Pacific community,' she said in her keynote speech at Abac-Asean BAC APFF 2025 Southeast Asia Conference: Financing Asean's Development Priorities today. She emphasised the need for Asean members to actively participate in Apec discussions and decisions, especially as the forum prepares its new roadmap. 'It is critical for Asean members to work together within Apec to ensure that our common priorities in Southeast Asia are well-embedded in this new Asia-Pacific roadmap and that initiatives in Asean and Apec are consistent with each other and mutually supportive,' she said. Lim said new business models and technology carry risks that are still not yet fully understood today. 'Enabling their safe and effective deployment would also require legal, policy and regulatory reforms, changes in industry practices and collaborative efforts to educate consumers, industry practitioners and regulators.' Responding to these challenges and opportunities, she said, will require stronger regional financial cooperation. 'At the same time, it will also require closer collaboration between the public and private sectors.' In this context, Lim said, the Apec and Asean processes have a critical role to play in providing platforms for action among members and for enhanced government and regulatory engagement with the private sector. She said new business models and rapid advances in technology can help in redesigning finance to better serve micro- small and medium enterprises and marginalised consumers. 'These include digital technologies like blockchain, AI and quantum computing. They include new products such as crypto and tokenised assets and digital currencies.' Meanwhile, Asean-BAC Malaysia chairman Tan Sri Nazir Razak said Asean has long talked about deeper economic integration but progress has been slow or repeatedly delayed. 'Echoing Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong's remark that the bloc faces its moment of truth, it must step up or risk losing relevance. Unfortunately, we have heard similar words before. I hope this time we really move ahead with integrating our economies,' he said. Nazir noted that execution has been lacking not only from governments, but also from the private sector. 'The private sector has also fallen short. Are we doing the deals we should be doing – in partnerships, mergers and acquisitions, supply chains and trade? I don't think so.' He highlighted that intra-Asean trade and investments remain low as a percentage of total trade and investments. 'The surge in regional Asean companies of the late 2000s has slowed. Are we fulfilling our potential in attracting investors to Asean?' Nazir said the bloc is not trying to model itself after the European Union, noting that Asean functions best through small, concrete steps, not grand, unachievable sound bites. 'The good news is that we now have a much clearer understanding of what Asean can and should realistically achieve.'
