Panthers power play production could be an edge in tight Stanley Cup Final against the Oilers
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Staying out of the penalty box is a good place to start for all the players involved in the Stanley Cup Final.
After talking all week about being more disciplined, the Edmonton Oilers were whistled for high-sticking a couple of times and tripping once in the first 16 minutes of Game 4 on Thursday night. Naturally, Matthew Tkachuk scored twice for Florida Panthers, and then a slashing call put the Oilers on the power play and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins' goal sparked their comeback that tied the series.
'It's a good series,' Tkachuk said. 'Special teams, both teams' power play seemed to be clicking.'
Florida is clicking at a higher rate at 33%, going 7 of 21 with the man advantage, compared with 20% on 4 of 20 for Edmonton. In a final knotted 2-2 that has often been as tight as it can be with three games already decided in overtime, the Panthers' power play production has the potential to be a difference-maker.
Until Tkachuk broke through, it had been the second unit of Brad Marchand, Sam Bennett, Carter Verhaeghe, Evan Rodrigues and Nate Schmidt doing most of the damage.
'We're building a lot of chemistry playing together,' Verhaeghe said. 'We have so many great players on the unit. Both units have been pretty good. I mean, we just want to move the puck right and get pucks to the net.'
The Panthers have five power play goals over the past two games and have scored at least one every night in the final. The Oilers have also cracked Sergei Bobrovsky at least once on the power play each game. Nugent-Hopkins scoring Thursday night could be a sign Connor McDavid and Co. are revving up against what has been a fairly effective Florida penalty kill.
Coach Paul Maurice believes that task has gone 'reasonably well.'
"I think they're still going to generate some action," Maurice said Friday before flying across North America. "I think the even strength chances are pretty tight through four games.' Ekholm's block
Tkachuk almost completed a hat trick in Game 4, and it could have changed the course of the entire series. With the score tied at 3-all late in the second period, he had the puck with a wide-open net to shoot at.
Edmonton defenseman Mattias Ekholm got his right skate and leg in front of Tkachuk's shot just in time.
'I didn't even know that the net was empty or anything — I was just in the moment trying to get as big as possible,' Ekholm said. "It ended up hitting me. It was obviously a big block at the time. I haven't thought too much more about it. It was a block, and sometimes you need those.' Better Barkov?
Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov picked up his first two points of the series in Game 4 with assists on Tkachuk's power-play goals. He has none at even strength.
Some of that could be connected to how much energy Barkov — a three-time Selke Trophy winner as the NHL's best defensive forward — is expending trying to keep McDavid's line and also Leon Draisaitl from scoring. He does not want to use that as an excuse.
'It's tough to say,' Barkov said. "You need to know, those two guys, where they are on the ice. Of course you're trying to have your head on a swivel, but I think I could be better, for sure.'

Year 2 has become a well-established inflection point for most college quarterbacks. By the end of their second season on campus, they have typically completed two spring practices, two training camps and two actual seasons. By that point, coaches have an idea of what they have. And players know if they're on track to start — or at least compete for the starting role. Advertisement That's when business decisions are made. On both sides. The blue-chip quarterbacks from the 2024 recruiting cycle are set to start their second training camp. Some are in position to start, some have already been recruited over and some have already switched schools. Here's a snapshot of where they stand entering Year 2. Note: All rankings are from the 247Sports Composite. Recruiting ranking: No. 1 QB, No. 6 overall Where he stands: The Buckeyes have not named a starting quarterback, but Sayin — who signed with Alabama but transferred to Ohio State after Nick Saban retired — is the favorite to claim the role. His main competition is junior Lincoln Kienholz, though true freshman Tavien St. Clair is waiting in the wings. Recruiting ranking: No. 2 QB, No. 7 overall Where he stands: Lagway is the face of the program at Florida and is one of the most exciting young quarterbacks in the sport. This will be his first full season as the starter. Recruiting ranking: No. 3 QB, No. 21 overall Where he stands: Raiola had an up-and-down freshman season but is the unquestioned starter as he enters his sophomore season. There are valid reasons to believe he'll take positive steps forward this fall, especially since he will be working with offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen for a full season. Recruiting ranking: No. 6 QB, No. 68 overall Where he stands: Carr is in the middle of a competition with Kenny Minchey but is viewed as the favorite to start. Notre Dame has sky-high expectations after playing for the national championship last season. Recruiting ranking: No. 7 QB, No. 105 overall Advertisement Where he stands: Grunkemeyer was elevated to the backup role when Beau Pribula hit the transfer portal last December. Theoretically, he should be in line to serve in that capacity again this season, but he has to hold off third-year sophomore Jaxon Smolik in camp. White transferred from Auburn after one season and will have to compete with Nate Bennett, the only other quarterback on the roster who threw a pass last season, for the backup role. Recruiting ranking: No. 9 QB, No. 112 overall Where he stands: With the arrival of five-star freshman Bryce Underwood, the favorite to start, and Fresno State transfer Mikey Keene this offseason, Davis has become something of an afterthought. The Wolverines also signed ECU transfer Jake Garcia for an added veteran presence this spring as well, so it's a very crowded path for Davis. Recruiting ranking: No. 10 QB, No. 114 overall Where he stands: Puglisi is competing for the starting role, but Gunner Stockton, who started the Sugar Bowl, is widely viewed as the leader. Recruiting ranking: No. 11 QB, No. 160 overall Where he stands: Nico Iamaleava's departure this spring left this job wide open. Merklinger will compete with UCLA/Appalachian State transfer Joey Aguilar and true freshman George MacIntyre for the role. Recruiting ranking: No. 12 QB, No. 205 overall Where he stands: Williams signed with Arizona and followed coach Jedd Fisch to Washington. He started the final two games of the 2024 season and showed some really encouraging signs. He's a potential star in the making for the Huskies. With Behren Morton returning, Hammond will remain the backup. Recruiting ranking: No. 14 QB, No. 234 overall Where he stands: According to the Indy Star, Cherry suffered a knee injury during prep for the College Football Playoff opener at Notre Dame and will serve as a student assistant during the 2025 season while he recovers. Recruiting ranking: No. 15 QB, No. 239 overall Where he stands: Van Buren gained valuable experience at Mississippi State last season but transferred to LSU in the offseason, giving him a chance to learn behind Garrett Nussmeier before the job opens in 2026. Former Horned Frogs assistant coach Doug Meacham is now the Cowboys offensive coordinator, and that familiarity might give Hejny a leg up. Recruiting ranking: No. 20 QB, No. 297 overall Where he stands: Hawkins started four games last season but was raw and thrown into the fire a bit too early. Oklahoma brought in Washington State transfer John Mateer, so Hawkins will serve primarily as the backup once again this season. 21. Trey Owens, Texas (No. 299) 22. Hurley was injured in a car accident in January but has rejoined the team at LSU. He'll be behind Nussmeier and, presumably, Van Buren. Trever Jackson (Florida State) and Davila (Purdue) have already transferred from the schools they initially signed with and are now sitting behind established starters at Arkansas and Nebraska, respectively. Surace remained at Rutgers but will have to wait patiently behind starter Athan Kaliakmanis. Advertisement Bailey was one of the most promising true freshman quarterbacks in the country last season and will be a significant piece of NC State's future. KJ Jackson is poised to be Arkansas' backup, even with the arrival of Trever Jackson. Mettauer signed with Wisconsin but transferred to Sam Houston after the 2024 season with former Badgers offensive coordinator Phil Longo, who is now the Bearkats head coach. Jaguars coach Liam Coen expecting big things from Trevor Lawrence: He needs to ‘take over'
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Trevor Lawrence's career has hit a pivotal stretch. The Jacksonville Jaguars franchise quarterback and No. 1 pick of the 2021 NFL Draft appeared to be on the brink of a meteoric rise. But then a couple of injury-plagued seasons stunted his progress, while unmet expectations on a team-wide level resulted in the second coaching change of his short tenure. Advertisement Now, however, with offensive guru Liam Coen running the show and a couple of exciting receivers at his disposal, Lawrence has his best opportunity to match the hype that's followed him throughout his career. 'I have a ton of confidence in what we're doing, and that feels really good,' Lawrence told The Athletic recently. 'From a scheme perspective, I've never been in a system like this. I've seen it work with other teams and players, and you can plug and play all these different types of quarterbacks and receivers, and they've all had success. That makes me excited for the group we have.' Lawrence's command of the offense will take time, but he's already given Coen reasons for optimism. The quarterback room took a 100-question pop quiz about the offense on their early-report date for training camp, and Lawrence easily outpaced the group with 85 correct answers. The test covered concepts, formations, motions, assignments in the run game, protections, criteria for changing plays at the line and a host of other elements that will arise during games. While such a score could be viewed as a reasonable expectation for a starting QB, Coen was legitimately impressed Lawrence performed markedly better than John Wolford and Nick Mullens, who have longer histories in the scheme. And these tests have a reputation for being stressful and challenging. 'He blew the doors off (the test),' Coen said. 'And it's showed (in practice). It's showed in his command of the huddle, the way he calls plays. He's being asked a lot on every single play.' Coen broke into the NFL under Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay, and, like his former boss, Coen is known to be demanding of his quarterbacks. Coen rode Baker Mayfield hard last season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the Bucs QB produced the best season of his career. But for Coen, the hard coaching comes from a place of mutual respect, along with his desire to draw the absolute best out of the position. There's a reason Coen and Mayfield have remained close. Now in Jacksonville, Coen has challenged Lawrence to excel as the team's leader, which is even more important after losing respected veterans like Christian Kirk and Evan Engram over the offseason. Lawrence has to rally every position together more than ever. Coen also has demanded Lawrence take total command at the line of scrimmage. Nearly 90 percent of Coen's play calls include two plays, and it's Lawrence's responsibility to get everyone set under the better call from the line. Advertisement 'That's where we'll need him,' Coen said. 'If I call a crappy play on third-and-8, how can you go put the team on your back and gain a first down? You might have to use your legs or run through somebody. You might have to go make a play. Ultimately, we're trying to get him to the point to go play freely. Just go play, have fun, cut it loose, let it rip because this is your team, and everybody is going to have to play up to your standards every single day. 'To this point in his career, he hasn't maybe always had to do that; he's maybe had some vets who could lead their own groups. Now, it's, 'Dude, you need to lead all those guys. They're looking to you, and we're looking to you.'' Lawrence has already felt the effects of the change. While he might be a more natural leader by example, he's consciously working to hold everyone to a certain level of accountability. If someone wasn't studying enough or a receiver was off a route a step short or missed their landmark out of a break, Lawrence has gotten in his ear. He's not the type to chew out a teammate, but he has a way of delivering a message while staying true to himself. 'It has to be natural,' Lawrence said. 'I've also learned how important it is to speak up and hold people accountable, to set the standard, to let other guys know little things aren't OK to let slide. Early in my career, it was hard for me. 'But this offseason, I let people know how critical the details are. I've gotten better at addressing all the little details and not letting things slide. I think that's the first step for me.' Lawrence's trajectory was on the uptick when he delivered a historic comeback victory during the 2022 postseason, but a high ankle sprain, concussion and sprained shoulder disrupted his 2023 season. He sprained his left AC joint in 2024, which resulted in his second surgery on the shoulder since his rookie year. The 25-year-old also suffered a concussion that ultimately ended his season. Advertisement Lawrence worked to strengthen both shoulders over the offseason, with a particular emphasis on avoiding more AC joint injuries, as part of an effort to have a healthier year. To be fair, the Jaguars need to help Lawrence, too. They've beaten themselves with too many drops and ill-timed mistakes over the past couple seasons, a complete reversal from the way they mastered clutch moments in 2022. Back-to-back first-rounders Brian Thomas Jr. and Travis Hunter should be one of the most explosive receiver duos in the league, so there will be an emphasis on getting them into space with the ball. And Coen's run-centric offense will take pressure off Lawrence as well. 'We need him to play well, but we're going to have to play well around him and help him,' Coen said. 'We've got to run the football better to help Trevor Lawrence. We've got to turn over the ball more on defense to help Trevor Lawrence. But Trevor needs to take it over, and he's done a phenomenal job of learning the system, putting in the time and work.' Lawrence's last season opened with his five-year, $275 million extension, but it closed with shoulder surgery and coach Doug Pederson's firing. The Jaguars have since turned to Coen and general manager James Gladstone to reignite the spark the organization seemed to find in 2022. And for that to happen, Lawrence has to take his game to the highest level of his career. That's been the mission so far. 'Everything feels like it's being done the right way,' Lawrence said of the Jaguars' approach to the season. 'I'm really excited for the future. Every year is its own year. Who knows how things are going to go, and I have a lot of belief and confidence it's going to be a great year for us.'
