Baca was just seconds away from reaching the UEFA Champions League final last season under first-year manager Hansi Flick. This season, the Blaugrana are looking to go at least one step further. Who says they can't? Eighteen-year-old Lamine Yamal is on his way to becoming the world's best player — if he isn't already. Fellow Ballon d'Or candidate Raphinha had 34 goals in all competitions in 2024-25, doubling his previous career-best. Robert Lewandowski, who turns 37 on Aug. 21, remains an elite striker. Pedri runs the show behind them. The rest of the regulars return, too, with forward Marcus Rashford the marquee summer addition.
The record 15-time European champs are coming off what, by their standards, was a dreadful 2024-25, with no major titles secured. But Los Blancos still boast one of the deepest, most expensive squads on Planet Fútbol. And Kylian Mbappé & Co. are now led by one of the sport's great up-and-coming coaches in former Real Madrid captain Xabi Alonso, who replaced the legendary Carlo Ancelotti in June.
Can Atleti end their four-year title drought and beat Barcelona and Real Madrid to La Liga glory this season? Occasionally, Madrid's other team outlasts Spain's double-headed monster. Longtime manager Diego Simeone will be hoping his team is due after a strong summer transfer window which saw $185 million-worth of new talent arrive — including former Villarreal attacker Álex Baena, USMNT midfielder Johnny Cardoso and Argentine World Cup-winner (and Atlanta United alum) Thiago Almada.

Barcelona open Liga title defence strolling past nine-man Mallorca
Spanish champions Barcelona opened their Liga campaign on Saturday with an island cruise as they played almost an hour against nine men on their way to a 3-0 victory in Mallorca. Two of Barcelona's Ballon d'Or nominees combined to put the visitors ahead after seven minutes, Lamine Yamal crossing for Raphinha to head in. Yamal played a key role in the second goal after 23 minutes. Mallorca defender Antonio Raillo headed away the teenager's shot and then fell to the ground. As the referee waved play on and Mallorca failed to clear, the ball fell to Ferran Torres. He fired home from the edge of the box. Manu Morlanes was one of two Mallorca players booked for dissent as they told the referee he should have stopped the game. Ten minutes later, Morlanes received a second yellow for a challenge on the rampant Yamal and was sent off. In the 39th minute, as Barcelona's debutant goalkeeper Joan Garcia jumped to head a ball clear, Mallorca striker Vedat Muriqi challenged with his boot so high he planted his studs on Garcia's cheek. Muriqi also saw red. Barcelona strolled through the second half. Coach Hansi Flick brought on summer loan signing Marcus Rashford, whose league registration only cleared on Saturday morning, for his Liga debut. Deep into injury time Yamal sliced through the home defence and curled in the third goal with the final kick of the game. In the evening's late games Valencia were hosting Real Sociedad and Alaves were at home to Levante. Atletico Madrid start their campaign on Sunday at home to Sevilla. Real Madrid close the opening round on Tuesday against Osasuna On Friday, Jorge de Frutos scored the first goal of the new La Liga season to set Rayo Vallecano on their way to a 3-1 win over 10-man Girona In the night's late game Real Oviedo's return to the top flight after a 24-year absence began on a flat note with a 2-0 defeat at Villarreal. pb/dmc

Here's another angle of the play where Doncic got hurt: While Doncic does have a history of some injury issues, especially to his legs, multiple reports indicated that he avoided any serious injuries on Saturday. Marc Stein reported that Doncic's injury is a "right knee contusion," which should not be considered serious. 🚨 BREAKING: Nottingham Forest complete signing of Man City prospect
Nottingham Forest have confirmed the signing of Manchester City academy graduate James McAtee. The 22-year-old makes the £30m switch to the City Ground having made 34 senior appearances for Pep Guardiola's side, scoring seven times across all competitions. McAtee has signed a five-year deal at Forest, while City have included both a buy-back and sell-on clause in the deal. McAtee becomes Nuno Espírito Santo's seventh addition of the summer and follows attacker Omari Hutchinson through the door, who was announced earlier today.
