Howrah to Sealdah in 12 mins, fare Rs 5 to Rs 70: New metro lines to transform Kolkata's travel
The new services, offering fares starting at Rs 5 and capped at Rs 70, are aimed at providing a more affordable and efficient way to travel in a city long known for its traffic congestion. The fare structure is distance-based, with slabs across the different corridors.
For the East-West Metro (Green Line), which now connects Howrah Maidan to Salt Lake Sector V, travel up to 2 km costs Rs 5, while the end-to-end journey is Rs 70. The Yellow Line, connecting the airport, charges Rs 5 for the shortest distance (Airport to Jessore Road). A ride from the Airport to Noapara costs Rs 20, while a longer journey to Esplanade or Chandni Chowk is Rs 40. The fare from the Airport to Howrah is Rs 50, and to Kavi Subhash, Rs 45. On the Orange Line, fares from Hemanta Mukhopadhyay (Ruby Crossing) to various stations on the Blue and Green Lines are integrated, with the fare to Howrah Maidan being Rs 50. The fare from the Airport to Hemanta Mukhopadhyay is Rs 65.
Green Line (Esplanade–Sealdah)
The final 2.6 km stretch of the East-West Metro corridor now fully connects Howrah Maidan to Salt Lake Sector V. This line, featuring India's first underwater metro tunnel, will drastically reduce travel time between Howrah and Sealdah. The journey from Howrah to Sector V, which earlier cost a minimum of Rs 500 by cab, will now be possible for Rs 70.
Yellow Line (Noapara–Jai Hind Bimanbandar)
The 7 km section is the first phase of a direct metro link to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport. It connects the airport to Noapara, a key interchange with the Blue Line. A journey from Airport to Noapara will cost Rs 20, to Esplanade Rs 40, and to Kavi Subhash Rs 45.
Orange Line (Hemanta Mukhopadhyay–Beleghata)
The 4.4 km extension connects Hemanta Mukhopadhyay (Ruby Crossing) to Beleghata, serving important locations like Science City and nearby hospitals. The fare from Airport to Hemanta Mukhopadhyay is Rs 65.
The inauguration marks a significant leap in Kolkata's metro expansion. In the three decades since 1984, when India's first metro was established in the city, only 27.99 km of track was built. In contrast, over 45 km of new lines have been added in the last 10 years — a 161% increase.
The expanded network is expected to ease traffic congestion, boost economic growth, and improve daily commutes for millions of passengers.

With passenger numbers surging on the newly opened Yellow Line, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has installed platform safety railings at the busy RV Road interchange station from Wednesday. The move comes less than two weeks after the Yellow Line connecting R.V. Road to Bommasandra began operations on August 11. The corridor has seen a sharp increase in ridership, with R.V. Road emerging as a key interchange station. After Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Interchange (Majestic), R.V. Road has now become the second station in the city to be fitted with such railings. 'The decision was prompted by safety concerns. With the commencement of the Yellow Line, passenger movement at R.V. Road has increased significantly. This is an interchange station where queues build up quickly, particularly during peak hours. The installation of railings is a preventive measure to ensure commuters do not accidentally step onto electrified tracks,' a senior BMRCL official told The Hindu. BMRCL recorded a peak ridership of 10.48 lakh on August 11, the first day of operations, following the inauguration of the 19.15-km Yellow Line by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Another senior official explained that the steel hand railings have been strategically placed along platform edges where train doors open. 'The objective is is to safeguard passengers from accidental falls and to prevent trespassing onto tracks, which can disrupt services and pose grave risks. These railings provide an essential layer of protection,' the official added. Commuters welcome move Ganesh Kumar, a passenger who frequently travels from R.V. Road to Bommasandra, said the railings were much needed. 'Since the Yellow Line began operations, the station has become very crowded. People push each other while queueing to board the trains, and it feels dangerous at times. These railings will help manage the crowd and keep people safe,' he said. Photography and videography prohibited The BMRCL has put up boards across platforms prohibiting photography and videography. 'We have noticed that many commuters attempt to take selfies and record videos near the platform edge as trains arrive, which is extremely dangerous. These restrictions are meant to prevent such risky behaviour and ensure passenger safety,' the official added. In February 2024, BMRCL installed platform safety railings at the Kempegowda Interchange after repeated incidents of passengers accidentally or deliberately entering the electrified tracks. The Namma Metro authorities have since been evaluating the effectiveness of the move at other high-footfall stations. BMRCL has already initiated steps to introduce platform screen doors (PSDs) across its upcoming network expansions. Tenders have been awarded for the installation of PSDs on the Pink Line, the Blue Line Phase 2A (Central Silk Board–K.R. Pura), and the Blue Line Phase 2B (K.R. Pura–airport). According to the agreement, 13 underground stations will be fitted with full-height PSDs, while 37 elevated or at-grade stations will receive half-height platform screen gates (PSGs). PSDs are considered global best practice in metro safety, according to officials. 'By physically separating platforms from tracks, they not only prevent accidental falls and overcrowding risks but also improve train efficiency through better signalling and crowd management. At present, only Delhi and Chennai metros are equipped with PSDs,' official explained.

PM Modi to inaugurate 6-lane Aunta-Simaria Ganga bridge in Bihar on Friday
Patna: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate Bihar's six-lane Aunta-Simaria bridge over the river Ganga, connecting Mokama in Patna district and Begusarai, on Friday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone of the Aunta-Simariya section of NH-31 and construction of the six-lane Ganga Setu on October 14, 2017. Modi will be flying to Simaria in Begusarai to inaugurate the bridge, a senior official familiar with the development said. 'The PM is likely to halt for around 30 minutes at Simaria and will walk on the newly constructed bridge,' he added. Modi had laid the foundation stone of the Aunta-Simariya section of NH-31 and construction of the six-lane bridge on October 14, 2017. Built at a cost of ₹1,900 crore, the bridge on NH-31 is 8.16 km long (including approach roads), with a 1.865 km stretch over the Ganga river to connect north and south Bihar for smooth connectivity and to reduce the load on the Mahatma Gandhi Setu, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) deputy general manager (media) Praveen Tyagi said, adding the bridge is 34 metres wide. The Aunta-Simaria bridge, constructed parallel to the two-lane rail-cum-road bridge Rajendra Setu, which is currently under repair, will reduce the travel distance for heavy vehicles by 100 km between regions of north Bihar (Begusarai, Supaul, Madhubani, Araria, etc.) and south Bihar (Patna, Sheikhpura, Nawada, Lakhisarai, etc.), apart from saving operating costs and fuel. The bridge will also provide an easy link to Simaria Dham, where thousands of pilgrims visit the Kalpavas Mela held every year. 'Bihar government is also working on developing Simaria/Simaria Dham as a hub for cultural tourism,' an official said. Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar said, 'This bridge will reduce the distance between north and south Bihar through this signature project. It is a reminder to the people how far Bihar has travelled from the lantern age when there were craters in the name of roads. The PM sees Bihar as the next growth engine and all his efforts are aimed at preparing a strong launch pad.' Deputy CM Samrat Choudhary said, 'Bihar is witnessing all-round development, thanks to the PM and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's initiatives, and it will only pick up momentum as the state strives to become economically strong with robust infrastructure.' During his visit to Gaya in Bihar, PM Modi will also lay the foundation stone and inaugurate multiple development projects worth around ₹13,000 crore and flag off two trains. He will inaugurate the four-lane Bakhtiyarpur to Mokama section of NH-31 worth around ₹1,900 crore, the Buxar Thermal Power Plant worth ₹6,880 crore, and the Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital & Research Centre at Muzaffarpur. The Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital & Research Centre in Muzaffarpur, which includes an advanced oncology outpatient department (OPD), in-patient department (IPD) wards, operation theatres, modern laboratory, blood bank, and a 24-bed intensive care unit (ICU) and High Dependency Unit (HDU), will provide advanced and affordable cancer treatment to patients in Bihar and neighbouring states, reducing the need to travel for treatment. Aiming to reduce pollution in the Ganga and improve sanitation facilities in keeping with the vision of Swachh Bharat, Modi will inaugurate the Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP) and Sewerage Network at Munger, constructed under Namami Gange, worth over ₹520 crore. He will also lay the foundation stone for a series of urban infrastructure projects worth around ₹1,260 crore, including STPs and sewerage networks at Daudnagar in Aurangabad and Jehanabad; STP, interception, and diversion works at Barahiya in Lakhisarai, and Jamui. Under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation 2.0 (AMRUT 2.0), he will lay the foundation stone for water supply projects at Aurangabad, Bodhgaya, and Jehanabad, in a bid to provide clean drinking water, modern sewerage systems, and improved sanitation. Boosting rail connectivity in the region, the PM will flag off two trains — Amrit Bharat Express between Gaya and Delhi and Buddhist Circuit Train between Vaishali and Koderma. He will also hand over keys to some of the 12,000 rural beneficiaries under Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana (PMAY)-Gramin and 4,260 beneficiaries under PMAY-Urban.
