MPI Lets Illegal Pesticide-laced Food Hit The Shelves In NZ
An investigation by Greenpeace Aotearoa has revealed that for at least five years, New Zealand Food Safety has failed to recall food products or prosecute suppliers when food has tested positive for illegally high levels of dangerous agrichemicals.
There have been well over 50 breaches, including one food sample containing 30 times the legal limit of a pesticide so toxic it is now banned in New Zealand and is classified as highly hazardous by the World Health Organisation.
"This is a shocking failure of the food safety system," says Greenpeace campaigner Gen Toop. "Illegally high pesticide residues are being found on our food, and the Government is letting it stay on the shelves. That's indefensible."
"Every family in Aotearoa should be able to feed their kids food that is safe from illegally high amounts of pesticide residue. But that is clearly not the case because of gross negligence by the very governmental body charged with ensuring food safety."
NZ Food Safety sits within the MPI, which is charged with enforcing the Food Regulations 2015. The regulations prohibit the sale of food with residues above maximum limits. But documents obtained by Greenpeace under the Official Information Act confirm there have been no prosecutions for breaches or even a single fine over the last five years, at least.
"This Government and New Zealand Food Safety appear more interested in protecting the profits of agrichemical companies like Bayer than protecting the safety of New Zealanders' food, and the health of our environment," says Toop.
In 2022-23, MPI testing found three food samples containing illegally high levels of methamidophos, a highly toxic organophosphate pesticide that is now banned. One sample had residue levels 30 times over the limit, and had been illegally used on a crop for which it wasn't authorised for use on.
According to the EPA, in its decision to ban the chemical, organophosphates like methamidophos are linked to developmental harm in fetuses and infants, neuropsychological and motor function effects, increased risk of cancer, Parkinson's disease, obesity, and diabetes.
The revelations come as ACT Ministers David Seymour and Andrew Hoggard push a food safety deregulation agenda, including a plan to fast-track pesticide approvals and allow agrichemical companies to self-assess their own hazardous chemicals.
They also come after MPI and NZ food safety have proposed a 100-fold increase in legally allowed residues of the controversial herbicide glyphosate on wheat, oats and barley.
"Instead of making it easier to use toxic chemicals on our food in ways that are blatantly illegal, the Government should be supporting farmers to transition to ecological farming that protects people and the planet," says Toop.

New Mental Health Centre To Transform Care In The Wellington Region
Health Minister Simeon Brown and Mental Health Minister Matt Doocey have today marked the beginning of construction on the new Sir Mark Dunajtschik Mental Health Centre in Lower Hutt. Joined by Hutt South MP Chris Bishop, the Ministers took part in a sod-turning ceremony to celebrate the start of a project that will transform mental health services across the Wellington region. 'Today, I'm proud to announce the Government is investing $38 million in the construction of this world-class facility – alongside an extraordinary $50 million donation from Sir Mark Dunajtschik, who also generously donated $50 million towards the new Wellington Children's Hospital in 2017,' Mr Brown says. 'This marks an important milestone for Lower Hutt and the wider region. The new centre will provide 34 adult acute inpatient beds – ten more than the existing facility – and will be purpose-built to support modern models of care, helping to deliver better outcomes for patients and their families. 'It will also enhance the region's mental health infrastructure, offering safer, more therapeutic spaces for those in urgent need.' Mental Health Minister Matt Doocey said the purpose-built centre would help ensure New Zealanders in distress receive timely, appropriate care. "People experiencing severe distress deserve care in the right environment, at the right time – it's not only better for them, but it also helps take pressure off our busy emergency departments. 'That's why mental health care must be underpinned by high-quality infrastructure that enables clinicians and support staff to deliver the safe, effective, compassionate care Kiwis deserve. 'Sir Mark's generosity is a powerful act of leadership. It reflects deep compassion, civic spirit, and an enduring commitment to the wellbeing of our communities. 'His $50 million contribution will leave a legacy of hope and care that will benefit generations to come. 'This project is about more than bricks and mortar. It's about improving lives and delivering the mental health outcomes New Zealanders deserve.' Note: This is one of 16 mental health and addiction capital projects underway as part of the nationwide Mental Health Infrastructure Programme – a major Government investment of $936 million to upgrade and modernise mental health facilities across New Zealand. Online only Greg Dixon's Another Kind of Politics is a weekly satirical column on politics that appears on Public health officials are warning New Zealanders to brace for a national lockdown as cases of the highly infectious 'David Seymour Derangement Syndrome' grow rapidly. Infectious diseases experts said an up-to-18-month lockdown might be the only way to save the country, and called for the government to act quickly. In the meantime, people were advised to socially distance themselves from Seymour, the maddening sound of his voice, his haunting image and his triggering name. 'The only way to prevent a lockdown for all New Zealanders is for Seymour to self-isolate at a remote silent retreat until the next election,' one official said. 'However, we don't believe Seymour is capable of making such a sacrifice for his country due to his own illnesses, which include the often fatal 'I'm the Only One Who's Right Disorder' and the incurable 'I Don't Care What You Have to Say Disease'. We also believe that Seymour, like US President Donald Trump, suffers from a chronic addiction to his own publicity.' The health official warned that if Seymour refused to self-isolate, the sanity of millions of New Zealanders could be at risk. 'If he won't self-quarantine, a lockdown for the rest of us is the only way to avoid a mental health catastrophe. It's us or him.' David Seymour Derangement Syndrome was first isolated and identified 42 years ago in Palmerston North. The only other recorded mass outbreak of the highly virulent disorder was during his appearance on season seven of Dancing with the Stars. Tens of thousands of people were infected then, many fatally. The disease is thought to be similar to 'Trump Derangement Syndrome', only less orange. The latest outbreak is linked to Seymour being included in Prime Minister Christopher Luxon's so-called 'Send in the Clowns, There Ought To Be Clowns Coalition' following the 2023 election. However the speed of spread had increased more quickly since Seymour introduced the Treaty Principles Bill last year. Following the Act leader becoming deputy prime minister last month, and the introduction of his Regulatory Standards Bill, the disease's virulence has increased 10-fold. It is now 'spreading like wildfire' and has become a national pandemic, the health official said. 'This last week and a half have been the worst of all for the spread of this disease. With Luxon in China and Europe, many more New Zealanders were exposed to Seymour as he attempted a series of prime minister impersonations, including holding his first post-cabinet press conference,' the expert said. 'That was like throwing petrol on a dumpster fire. If Seymour is allowed to do further prime minister impressions, the country is likely doomed unless there is a nationwide lockdown.' In related news, new research out this week shows that David Seymour Derangement Syndrome is now a leading cause of people moving to Australia. 'I'm not surprised,' the health official said. 'Getting the hell out of the country is the only guaranteed way to escape this pandemic.' Luxon 'completely relaxed' about possible end of world Prime Minister Christopher Luxon told a NATO leaders meeting this week that they should be 'completely relaxed' about the possible end of the world this year. 'I know I am,' Luxon said. 'I've found that being completely relaxed about things like rising homelessness, rising poverty and the destruction of the environment for profit is a great, effective way to prepare yourself to be completely relaxed about the end of the world,' he told leaders. 'A spoonful of chillaxing really does help the medicine go down.' With Russia's bloody war with Ukraine now in its fourth year, the horrifying 20-month Israel-Gaza conflict ongoing and fears that the Israeli and US attacks on Iran could lead, despite this week's ceasefire, to a broader Middle East conflict, many observers believe the world could be on the precipice of a world-ending war. However, Luxon said he was 'laser-focused' on pretending it wasn't happening. 'So in the face of oblivion, the most important thing is to focus on what really matters to New Zealanders, and that's growth, growth, growth!'
