Borders Book Festival announces record-breaking initial figures
With sellout sessions on Thursday, Friday and a huge attendance on Saturday, ticket sales soared by a stunning 11% on 2024, which was itself a record-breaking year.
Stars glittered in Harmony Garden in Melrose as crowds flocked to see Michael Palin, Gordon Buchanan, Jeremy Hunt, Andrew Marr, Gavin Esler, Larry Lamb, Jim Swire, Alison Steadman, Ian Rankin and a host of other authors.
The sun split the skies on Thursday and Friday and even the occasional bout of refreshing weather on Saturday dampened no one as festival-goers enjoyed the unique atmosphere of the Food Village in the Orchard under a vast Clear Span marquee, newly erected this year.
Festival Directors Alistair Moffat – who was this week awarded an MBE in the King's Birthday Honours said: 'With more superb sessions still to come on Sunday, we might even nudge that 11% figure upwards.
'The atmosphere in the marquees at the sold-out sessions was magical, as audiences laughed, asked excellent questions and enjoyed listening to our superb authors.'
The 2026 Borders Book Festival will run from 11th to 14th June and hoteliers in the central Borders are reporting that their guests are already rebooking rooms en masse.
'We can't wait for the next one', said Paula Ogilvie, 'but maybe after a bit of a breather and even a break.'

The turning point came after hearing from her fourth neurosurgeon, who gave her the "wake-up call" she needed by sternly telling Davina she would die if she didn't act quickly, adding: 'It's a big tumour. It can't grow anymore, or you'll get water on the brain. If you're on a plane, there would have to be an emergency landing.' Breaking down in tears at Fearne Cotton's Happy Place Festival at Gunnersby Park, Davina said: "I needed to get my brain in the right place where I could be calm before the operation. "I had to make sure that my kids were going to be OK if I did not make it. That is all I really cared about. "I knew my partner, Michael, would be OK as he is a whole person, but I was really worried about my kids." Davina has been dating celebrity hairdresser Michael Douglas since separating from her former husband Matthew Robertson in 2017, calling him her "soulmate" during her brain tumour battle. The mum of three who shares Holly, 23, Tilly, 21, and 18-year-old Chester with her ex added: "I went into forensic thinking about my children and where they were at in their life, what stage they were at. "You are only happy as your unhappiest child. "But I realised that they would be great, they would miss me, and I want to be with them, but they would be fine. "I felt I could go to sleep on the operating table and know that they were all here to help me, but I can let go of the outcome, and it was the best gift." Coming to terms with death has changed Davina's life for the better, she says - despite getting the all clear after the 14mm wide colloid cyst was removed in November 2024. She says: "They had said it was a benign brain tumour and for four months I thought 'that's fine. No need to do anything about it. I have had it since I was born.' I realised I did not have that before. Now I wake up and wonder why the grass is green, and now I think of the most random things. "I needed someone to tell me what to do, and my American doctor told me I should undergo surgery to have the tumour cut out. "When I got the phone call, although it was a hard one to hear, I needed it." And in a controversial statement, the mum of three claims her brain surgery is "the best thing to ever happen to me". "I am not afraid of dying anymore," Davina continued. "It was the biggest journey of my life. Without sounding arrogant, I now love myself. "I have been on a massive life journey, and I have been through terrible struggles. That is where the learning comes from. "If something really hard happens now, I know it is a good thing. "I said to Michael, 'If I make it through this brain surgery, it is going to be the best thing that has ever happened to me'. "The learning that I have made in the past two years has been so immense and enriching. I would not change it for the world. "Obviously, when it happened, it was like a calamity, but to not be afraid of disasters, that will make you a better person." Now Davina says she wants to help others on their deathbed with her Begin Again podcast, a show dedicated to empowering people to embrace midlife as their most transformative era yet. Davina's guests - including famous faces and industry experts - share stories of growth and rediscovery. She says: "Midlife is not the start of the end; instead, it's the perfect opportunity and time to Begin Again", says Davina about her podcast, and added: "It has been a wake-up call. We have a wake-up call, and we are here. "A couple of people say I look so well, but it is because I am in a happy place. "My happy place is now with people I love, with Michael, our kids, our families - probably in a karaoke bar or Ibiza or with people I love with music and dancing. "I feel free. We were listening to Florence and the Machine the other day, and that song Free with everybody dancing. That, for me, with people you love, that is my drug of choice. "Now I want everyone to be able to say 'I have lived the life I wanted' and not think things like 'I wish I had not done that job. I wished I had not stayed in this relationship'."

Irvine Welsh among Ilkley Literature Festival stars
The writer Irvine Welsh, actor Hugh Bonneville, comedian Michael Palin and former politician Nick Clegg have been confirmed as household names who will appear at this year's Ilkley Literature Festival. The annual event takes place over 17 days starting on 3 October and will cover themes ranging from the dangers of big tech to cooking and the Post Office scandal. Other names who will be discussing their latest work include Wild Swans author Jung Chang, poet laureate Simon Armitage and "festival favourite" Gyles Brandreth. Festival director Erica Morris told the BBC: "Bradford has an incredibly rich history of literary excellence and we are highlighting not only the people who come here from other parts of the UK and the world but the the homegrown talent - which is immense." Comedian Alan Davies will be sharing his journey in the world of comedy with his latest memoir White Male Stand-Up, while Queen of Shops retail expert Mary Portas will take guests "behind the shop window" with I Shop, Therefore I Am. Paddington and Downton Abbey star Hugh Bonneville will be introducing his first children's book, Rory Sparkes and the Elephant in the Room, while Brandreth will discuss his book Somewhere, A Boy and A Bear, which marks the centenary of the publication of Winnie the The Dark Side of the Internet theme, journalist James Bloodworth shares his experiences investigating the toxic subcultures of the "manosphere" and Dr Kaitlyn Regehr will explain why screen addiction is on the rise and how we can quit our phones. Ilkley Literature Festival has been going since 1973 and the very first one was opened by the legendary poet W.H. Auden - author of Funeral Blues. Ms Morris said: "From the very earliest days, Ilkley was called - rather condescendingly - an 'outpost of progress' because it brought incredible writers and thinkers and artists to a relatively small Yorkshire town, back when the only other literature festival in the country was Cheltenham. "It was very innovative right from the get-go and incredibly expansive in the subjects that it raised and the kind of writers that it included."Other well-known faces include Sir Tony Robinson introducing his fiction debut and broadcasters Edward Stourton, Mark Radcliffe and Stuart Welsh will be discussing the sequel to his bestseller Trainspotting. Men in Love picks up the story Renton, Spud, Sick Boy and Begbie in a new era as they head into rave and romance in the late "big ideas" up for discussion include how to save the planet in a climate crisis, explorations in philosophy and the science of asked who she is particularly excited to see, Ms Morris replied: "Nick Clegg." She added: "I think Nick will be a really interesting person to to hear from and I think he's probably going to get some really interesting questions from our audience as well."Tickets go on general sale on Tuesday 26 August, with priority bookings open for Friends of the Festival from Wednesday 20 August. The TV presenter, 55, was held earlier this month by West Mercia Police. It comes after the star appeared in court last week for a separate charge engaging in controlling or coercive behaviour. Blades is accused in that case of causing 43-year-old Lisa Zbozen to fear "violence" would be used against her on at least two occasions. He has entered not guilty pleas to those charges and is due to stand trial later this month. Blades was arrested for the coercive control charges on May 3 - the same day wife Lisa publicly announced her decision to end their 18-month marriage. The couple married in Barbados in November 2022 in an intimate beach-front ceremony. Blades was awarded an MBE in 2022 for services to craft while King Charles appeared on the Repair Shop the same year. As well as fronting The Repair Shop since 2017, Blades also hosted BBC shows including Money For Nothing and Jay Blades' Home Fix. He also appeared as a contestant on the Strictly Come Dancing Christmas special and fronted a special BBC documentary, Jay Blades: Learning to Read at 51. A West Mercia Police spokesperson said: 'Jason Blades, 55, of Claverley in Shropshire, has been charged with two counts of rape.
