Mumbai rain: Police advise residents to 'stay indoors', officials on 'high alert
'Due to heavy rainfall in Mumbai and nearby districts, citizens are advised to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary, avoid coastal areas, and drive cautiously,' the Mumbai Police wrote on a post on X.
'Our officials and staff are on high alert and ready to assist Mumbaikars. In case of any emergency, please dial 100,' it added.
On Friday morning, Mumbai residents woke up to heavy rain, with many areas in the city experiencing continuous downpour.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and Thane, warning of more intense showers ahead. Palghar has been placed under a yellow alert, indicating moderate weather activity, yet care is still to be exercised.
The weather department has also issued a red alert for Raigad, Ratnagiri, predicting 'heavy to very heavy rainfall' in a few places and extremely heavy rainfall in isolated places on Friday.
The red alert has also been maintained for the ghat regions of Satara and Pune as well.
A red alert implies a "take action" warning, while orange and yellow alerts suggest "be prepared to take action" and "be aware" warnings, respectively. An orange alert signifies "be prepared," while a yellow alert means "be aware. "

Heavy rains lash Bengal: IMD issues yellow alerts for South Bengal till August 3
Written by Parthivee Mukherji The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday issued yellow alerts for most of South Bengal, warning of thunderstorms with gusty winds (30–40 kmph) and lightning till August 3. The alert covers districts including Howrah, Hooghly, Bankura, Birbhum, and Nadia. The forecast flagged waterlogging in low-lying areas and traffic congestion in urban zones as likely impacts. Citizens have been advised to avoid movement through waterlogged areas. In Kolkata, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) predicted a 'generally cloudy sky with a few spells of light to moderate rain or thundershower'. The city recorded a maximum temperature of 28.5 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 25.7 degrees Celsius on Thursday. In North Bengal, several districts including Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar were placed under yellow alerts due to expected heavy rainfall (7-11 cm), thunderstorms, gusty winds and lightning over the next week. Orange alerts, indicating the possibility of very heavy rainfall (7-20 cm), have been issued for Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, Alipurduar and Cooch Behar. The IMD warned of possible landslides in the hilly areas of Darjeeling and Kalimpong, and lightning risks in open areas. Residents have been advised to take shelter in safe locations. According to the RMC, the intensified monsoon activity is being driven by an active cyclonic circulation. 'The upper air cyclonic circulation over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh now lies over northern parts of Gangetic West Bengal and extends up to 7.6 km above mean sea level,' the IMD stated. 'The monsoon trough at mean sea level now passes through Sri Ganganagar, Rohtak, Banda, Sidhi, Ranchi, Diamond Harbour and then southeastward to the northeast Bay of Bengal. Under the above meteorological conditions, widespread light to moderate rainfall with isolated heavy rain is likely over West Bengal during the next two days. Further, due to strong monsoon flow towards the north, isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall activity is likely over North Bengal during August 2 to 6,' the IMD press release added. Weather Department Predicts Rain In Delhi Till August 3
New Delhi: The national capital witnessed a cloudy sky and rain on Thursday morning. The weather department has forecast light to moderate rain throughout the day, but no warning advisory has been issued for the city so far. The minimum temperature settled at 24.7 degrees Celsius, 1.1 degrees below normal, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) data showed. According to the IMD, the city received intermittent rains through the night. In the 24 hours till 6:30 am on Thursday, Central Delhi's Pusa station received 40 mm of rainfall, Sports Complex 38 mm, Safdarjung 34 mm, Najafgarh 23.5 mm, Pragati Maidan 22.1 mm, KV Narayana 20.5 mm, Lodhi Road 18.5 mm, KV Janakpuri 18 mm, and Ayanagar 13 mm. The regional Met centre has predicted that the ongoing spell of rain is expected to continue till August 3. Meanwhile, the air quality was recorded in the satisfactory category at 11 am, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) reading of 56, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data showed. According to the CPCB, an AQI between zero and 50 is considered 'good', 51 to 100 'satisfactory', 101 to 200 'moderate', 201 to 300 'poor', 301 to 400 'very poor', and 401 to 500 'severe'.
