The Washington Post is offering buyouts to select teams as part of an ongoing restructuring.
"Like the rest of our industry, we are adapting to changing habits and new technologies," executive editor Matt Murray wrote in a memo to staff on Tuesday. "To reach new audiences we must increase our staffing flexibility and expand in areas such as audience data and social video."
The voluntary buyouts will be offered to news employees with a tenure of at least 10 years at the Post, as well as all members of the video department, copy desks, and opinion section.
The time period to accept the buyouts will last roughly two months, ending in July. The announcement comes as Post employees are set to return to the office next week.
In his memo, Murray outlined changes to its video and copy teams.
On the video front, the company will place greater emphasis on "repeatable franchises" and "personality-driven formats for YouTube," while also embedding producers within the newsroom.
The Post will also restructure its copy teams to combine all editing operations into one desk.
In a separate memo, deputy opinion editor Mary Duenwald wrote that the opinion section is still looking for a new top editor and will soon "carry out in earnest" a plan announced in February to focus on personal liberties and free markets.
"Ideally, our new editor will be known before the time is up" to decide on taking a buyout, Duenwald wrote. She said the offer was "meant to give people security to make a clear-eyed decision on whether they want to be part of the new direction for Post Opinion."
The Jeff Bezos-owned newspaper sparked a backlash last year after opting not to endorse a candidate in the Presidential election for the first time in 40 years.
In January, more than 400 staffers urged Bezos to meet with company leaders, saying that integrity and transparency issues had sparked high-level departures.
In February, Bezos overhauled the opinion section and announced editor David Shipley would be stepping down. In March, Murray detailed further organizational changes, including new leadership roles and reorganized teams.
A Post spokesperson said the company has been going through a serious and significant transformation in recent months, and called the voluntary buyouts an inflection point for employees to ask themselves if they want to stay or go.
"The Washington Post is continuing its transformation to meet the needs of the industry, build a more sustainable future and reach audiences where they are," a spokesperson for the Post told BI in a statement.

Dear All,
Today, we are announcing that The Washington Post is offering a Voluntary Separation Program (VSP) to news employees with 10 or more years' service at The Post, as well as to all members of the video department and to all members of the copy desk and sports copy desk.
The program is part of our ongoing newsroom transformation efforts aimed at reshaping and modernizing the newsroom for the current environment. Like the rest of our industry, we are adapting to changing habits and new technologies that are transforming news experiences. Even as we have begun creating new departments and welcoming new colleagues, to reach new audiences we must increase our staffing flexibility and expand in areas such as audience data and social video.
Our efforts are beginning to bear fruit. We are producing a more diverse news report with a great deal of superb and impactful journalism. I am confident we have exciting opportunities ahead of us. I also recognize, as I said at the all-staff meeting in March, that reimagining the newsroom, rethinking all we do and how we do it, is disruptive and even uncomfortable. The VSP presents an opportunity to colleagues who may want to pursue alternatives.
In that light the VSP is being offered to the entirety of the video team and to the copy desks. In the former case, we are restructuring and refocusing our video team to place much greater emphasis on developing repeatable franchises and more personality-driven formats for YouTube, other social media channels and off-platform more broadly, while embedding some video producers and facilitators in the core newsroom to help all our journalists and artists produce more video for our products.
On the editing front, we aim in the coming months to combine operations to one desk that will be part of the central news hub and ultimately will serve our digital products full time. The new print desk will also have a handful of crucial editing roles. These changes will enhance the speed and quality of our digital products and free most of us from constraints imposed by print requirements—while preserving the editing standards that undergird our focus on accuracy, clarity and credibility.
I want to underscore that the VSP is voluntary, and that we are fortunate we can offer enhanced packages for those who choose them.
Today's announcement kicks off an approximately two-month process that should culminate around the end of July. Eligible employees will receive a note with more details of the VSP later this morning from Wayne Connell. We will meet with the video team and editing desks later today and hold an information session for all others who are eligible. We also will schedule training and information sessions for managers in coming days.
In coming weeks, we will name a print editor and welcome Jason Anders, the new ME for the news hub, and with them share more detailed plans on the new editing desks. And I expect to hold another all-staff in June to update everyone on our progress. In the meantime, please feel free to bring your questions to Wayne and Liz Seymour.
With the VSP, we will no doubt see valued colleagues and friends decide to leave The Post. But as stewards of this great institution, we all must remain relentlessly focused on bringing engaging and relevant journalism to growing numbers of readers in the formats and ways they want it in 2025. That is an urgent and important task for us given the pace of technological change, the industry's evolving landscape and the ever-present need to produce and promote strong, rigorous and independent journalism.

It's been a few months since we learned about changes ahead for Post Opinion. We're closer to the time when the section will begin to carry out in earnest the plan laid out in February to devote attention to personal liberties and free markets. So it's important to begin to transition to this time of reimagining Post Opinion.
Today, the company is announcing a voluntary separation program for Opinion. All eligible employees in our section will receive an email from Wayne Connell shortly laying out the details (contractors and freelancers will not).
Please know that all of us will have time to make up our minds about whether to accept this offer. The decision period will run until the end of July. Ideally, our new editor will be known before the time is up.

Why your job may face a double threat if the economy sours
Hardly a day passes without word that a major company is increasing its use of artificial intelligence, or a warning that AI will have dramatic impacts - one day - on the U.S. workforce. Now, some economists warn that a projected slowdown in the U.S. economy could accelerate the trend. Subscribe to The Post Most newsletter for the most important and interesting stories from The Washington Post. With new reports suggesting that the U.S. economy will probably slow this year, economists and AI experts say more businesses may speed up AI use to cut costs, generate revenue and boost worker productivity. That could lead to more-rapid adoption but also downsides, including job losses and consumer harms. 'Economic downturns spur you to do more,' said Eric So, professor of global economics and management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. 'There's a lot of focus on what we can do and not enough questions like 'Should we do that?' and 'Is it being done in a safe way?'' The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development estimated on Tuesday that economic growth in the United States will slow to 1.6 percent this year from 2.8 percent, while inflation is set to rise to 3.9 percent by the end of this year. Although trade tensions have cooled somewhat since President Donald Trump announced big tariffs in April, economists worry that higher trade barriers and uncertainty will continue to eat into growth, with some predictions of recession in the coming year. While a slowdown could encourage more use of AI, there's also evidence that some companies will pull back on heavy technological investments. A wide range of companies are increasingly turning to AI regardless of the economic environment. Wall Street firms including JPMorgan Chase and Morgan Stanley are using AI to help boost sales and update legacy code. E-commerce company Shopify and cloud storage start-up Box are requiring workers to use AI regularly in their work to boost productivity and results. Social media firm Meta plans to automate risk assessment as it relates to the privacy reviews of its products. IBM, which recently announced job cuts, replaced a couple hundred human resource workers with 'AI agents' to do repetitive tasks such as onboarding and scheduling interviews. It said that over the past four years, AI saved the company 40 percent in its HR budget. Dario Amodei, CEO of billion-dollar AI start-up Anthropic, received attention last week for suggesting that half of all white-collar entry-level jobs may be eliminated by AI within five years. Most people 'are unaware that this is about to happen,' Amodei told Axios. 'It sounds crazy, and people just don't believe it.' College graduates may already be losing jobs to AI, according to a report last month from the global economic advisory firm Oxford Economics. The unemployment rate for recent college graduates has risen 1.6 percentage points since mid-2023, nearly triple the increase of the national unemployment rate. 'There are signs that entry-level positions are being displaced by artificial intelligence at higher rates,' Matthew Martin, Oxford Economics senior economist, wrote in the report, while noting that some of the change may be normal. Since the debut of OpenAI's ChatGPT in late 2022, companies have been relatively slow in their adoption of generative AI. About 8.7 percent of U.S. companies used AI to produce their products and services in the two weeks between April 21 and May 4, up from 4.8 percent a year earlier, according to the Business Trends and Outlook Survey conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau. ChatGPT, meanwhile, has more than 400 million weekly active users. (OpenAI has a content partnership with The Washington Post.) AI's broader use could save companies money but also more quickly expose some of the downsides of the services, especially when they struggle with accuracy or have biases, experts say. That could be especially problematic in fields like medicine, finance and law, said Columbia Business School professor Laura Veldkamp. 'When we have tech shifts, you will get things right and wrong,' said Veldkamp, whose research explores how companies' use of AI affects the macroeconomy. 'As the tech grows up, it goes through a painful stage. We have to get through that to hone the benefits from it.' Another impact will probably be job displacement, experts say. So far, companies have mostly touted AI as a tool to aid human workers. But as the tech gets better and budgets get tighter in a slowing economy, companies may be more willing to outsource work to AI, slowing hiring or even cutting jobs, experts say. Klarna, a Swedish fintech company, said AI helped it lower vendor expenses, increase internal productivity and better manage operations with fewer employees (the company reduced head count by 38 percent from 2022 to 2024), according to filings made with the Securities and Exchange Commission in March. It has since suggested it went too far in cuts and is hiring more people. 'The hope is that AI will be utilized to improve work and productivity and create new work,' said Mark Muro, a Brookings Institution fellow who has studied AI and its impacts. 'But there's no guarantee.' Historically, automation has been one solution for labor cost-savings during difficult economic conditions, Muro said. In some cases, investments in automation allow companies to cut costs through head count reduction. When consumer demand falls, companies can take time to make a big technological switch that would have been too disruptive in the regular course of business, Veldkamp said. An AI revolution has the potential to impact a wide range of industries - from customer service to health care to financial services and beyond - because the technology is able to do tasks such as data-crunching, research and writing that are part of white-collar work. And it comes at a lower cost than some previous technological revolutions like automating a manufacturing facility with machines, Veldkamp said. Microsoft recently found that some companies are considering using AI to reduce head count in the next year or so, according to a study it conducted. But more of them aim to maintain head count and retrain their workforce. 'You have a class of companies going all in and reinventing themselves with AI,' said Colette Stallbaumer, co-founder of Microsoft WorkLab and general manager of Microsoft 365 Copilot. 'But you've also got a lot of companies and enterprises still figuring it out. It'll still take time, and every company is going to be different.' Economic strain may lead some companies to delay AI investments, deeming the risks to be higher than the rewards, said Brett House, an economics professor at Columbia Business School. 'If there's uncertainty, it's not clear there's a market, or you can't determine the prices of your goods, it puts a huge chill on investing in any tech,' he said. 'Companies that are cash-constrained, have thin margins or a smaller labor component may just pull back on investment to preserve their current business model.' Recent earnings reports from two Big Tech companies suggest that a slowdown in the economy is spurring them to rethink their aggressive spending. Microsoft, which has been pouring money into AI, reported that it's spending $1 billion less in capital expenditures from the previous quarter, though that still amounts to $21.4 billion. The company also recently said it is 'slowing or pausing' some early-stage data center projects, which are needed to power AI. Amazon Web Services is reportedly pausing some of its data center leasing discussions, particularly international ones, according to a recent note from Wells Fargo analysts citing economic uncertainty. (Amazon founder Jeff Bezos owns The Washington Post.) Big technological shifts like AI take time, many economists say. AI might move faster given how quickly companies can roll it out, but the shift won't be overnight, Veldkamp said. As the technology develops, new jobs will probably also emerge, even ones that aren't yet imaginable, say experts. Five years ago, few would have heard of prompt engineers - those who specialize in crafting effective prompts for AI bots. But there will be a period in which some roles either disappear or decrease in quantity before new jobs are created. Government data may already indicate that computer programmers are feeling the squeeze, Muro said. 'This is all new. We haven't gone through a down economy with a technology at this early stage, so it'll be interesting to see how this plays out,' he said. Opinion - After years of war, Syria glances westward — toward Trump
President Trump has announced the beginning of sanctions being lifted on Syria, which had been imposed during the genocidal rule of Bashar al-Assad. The Syrian people and their new leadership deserve a chance to rebuild their great nation. While the sanctions were still in place, the Syrian American Alliance for Peace and Prosperity invited us to visit post-Assad Syria at a very tenuous moment for the Syrian people. We agreed and set off on an open-minded, fact-finding mission. What we saw was daunting, but we ultimately we came away cautiously optimistic. When we arrived in Damascus, we observed grown men openly weeping and others cheering as they saw their homeland for the first time in decades. For centuries, Syria had boasted a diverse, multicultural population, until the 54-year reign of the Assad regime. Assad leveled entire villages while waging war on his political enemies, inflicting billions of dollars of damage on his own country. In this political genocide, Assad murdered close to a million of his own people — Christians, Muslims, Kurds and Druze alike, regardless of religion — all while using military aid and financial support from Russia and Iran. With Russia's invasion of Ukraine and Iranian activities being curtailed through sanctions and the degradation of their terrorist proxies, support that had been vital to Assad's reign dissipated. He was ultimately forced to flee to Russia as rebel forces advanced, although he regrettably was able to pilfer additional billions from the nation's coffers on his way out the door. During our visit, we witnessed the devastated Syrian economy, where cash is almost worthless and credit cards are not accepted. Open-air markets resort to basic barter and trade for items like clothing and necessities, which are laid out next to rubble. With no functioning gas stations, young men with large hand-held jugs stand along the road to fill vehicles for a price negotiated on the spot. Despite this, the spirit of the Syrian people is not broken. Banners reading 'Make Syria Great Again' were displayed along the roads, sending messages of hope for the first time in decades. We heard nothing but admiration for President Trump and his administration — most notably for his decision to stop the bombing of Idlib in 2019. We then met individually with Syria's new president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, well aware of his previous history as a Syrian Al-Qaeda member, though having cut ties in 2016. However, contrary to his biography, the actions al-Sharaa has taken to help the country so far have been positive. Al-Sharaa has enlisted an impressive and diverse group of Syrian advisors, some of whom had fled the country years ago to escape Assad. His Minister of Social and Labor Affairs, Hind Kabawat, is an accomplished Christian woman, and not a choice one would expect from someone with prior ties to al-Qaeda. Just as surprising, one of al-Sharaa's first acts upon taking power was to free thousands of Syrians that Assad had imprisoned and tortured. Al-Sharaa has declared a return to religious freedom, and during our visit, we witnessed a huge gathering of the Christian population for the first public celebration of Easter held in decades. In our meetings, al-Sharaa expressed a desire to work with the West. He called Israel by name and simultaneously emphasized his desire to promote peace and even possibly join the Abraham Accords. His commitment to avoid the often alluring proxy relationship with Iran is a testament to his desire to find more favorable partners. America is accustomed to being asked for funds and military support, but al-Sharaa wants Syrians defending Syria. His main request was for sanctions relief and for Syria not to be divided into regions. This is not only good for Syria, but a more stable western-leaning Syria provides a new layer of protection for America's ally to the south, Israel. He expressed the importance of having democratic elections, welcoming tourists of all faiths, and creating new trade routes, pointing to the country's strategic location and its ability to allow faster transit of products to the West. He emphasized the necessity for post-conflict Syria to have an economic partner, pointing out that Russia has already made an offer, in addition to others like China and Iran making overtures; however, al-Sharaa has not yet accepted these. His clear preference is to make the U.S. the preferential trade partner, an opportunity Syria finally has for the first time in over 50 years. Hearing al-Sharaa and the Syrian government express an interest in being a stabilizing force in the region for peace and prosperity is a moment in time we must consider carefully, and why we applaud President Trump's decision to lift the sanctions on a war-weary Syria. For accountability, we also believe al-Sharaa must be willing to accept international investigations into the treatment of Syria's religious minorities. When a new leader opens the doors to his country without restriction while still weakened from decades of dictatorial destruction, and when he promotes religious freedom while simply asking for a chance to open trade with the West, we should explore what might be possible. We believe huge investments are waiting to rebuild this great nation. With Trump at the helm, this could be a monumental moment for unexpected peace in the Middle East. One of Brooklyn's oldest homes has listed for $5.95M
A home in Brooklyn Heights not only offers a glimpse of old New York — but also the chance to live in a strong piece of local history. Built in 1829, making this one of the oldest residences in the borough, the clapboard Federal-style home at 69 Orange St. has just hit the market for $5.95 million, The Post has learned. It offers not only four to five bedrooms and a private garden, but also what locals say is a living link to the Underground Railroad. Indeed, this property is believed to have been part of the network that led escaped slaves to their freedom. Getty Images To walk through the house, which includes a mansard roof and Victorian-era gingerbread trim, is to step back into a version of Brooklyn that predates the Civil War. But the real stories are below the surface. He noticed one was slightly out of place and suspected something was behind it. After wiggling it loose, it was clear there was an opening. We believe it was part of the Underground Railroad.' That hunch is supported by the home's immediate neighbor, Plymouth Church, a cornerstone of the 19th-century abolitionist movement. 19 Current owner, Rasa McKean, recalled how her late husband, Henry McKean, discovered hidden crawl spaces and stone-lined tunnels leading toward the church. McKean said she and her late husband found additional clues while doing outdoor chores. 'We dug up the garden to replace the soil, and that's when we discovered a tunnel underneath, leading along the back fence,' she recalled. 'It looked like it went all the way to the church.' McKean and her husband, Henry McKean, a mathematics professor, bought the home in the early 1990s for $345,000 after spotting its photo in a Montague Street real estate office. 'Ours is one of the few that remains — and we changed all the electrical systems, water pipes and heating in a way that preserved the history.' 'They tried all these years to keep the same paint, which was a milk paste paint,' said listing representative Monica Luque of Douglas Elliman. 'They only did what was absolutely necessary in terms of heating and cooling and plumbing, but everything else is there. All the original bones are there.' Luque is now marketing the home alongside co-agent Gabriel Suarez, and said the late McKean's wish was that the city step in to preserve the house after his death. 'It would be amazing if the city or the state bought it instead and kept it,' she said. 'It is a museum.' Vibra Inc Though the home is already protected from demolition under its landmark designation, Luque noted that many historic interiors in the neighborhood have not fared as well. Advertisement 'Everyone else — if they didn't tear them down, because they must be preserved as landmarks, thank God, then they destroy them on the inside and make them completely modern,' she said. 'This family tried so hard to preserve it.' Though the home is already protected under its landmark status, Luque said the owners had begun the process of seeking official certification recognizing the property as part of the Underground Railroad. She noted that while such designations can take years, the documentation they've gathered — from physical tunnel evidence to oral histories — will eventually help secure the home's formal place in the national historic record. 'I'm in my 70s and it's too much for me to take care of, and my husband is gone,' she said. 'Our mission was we wanted to leave a legacy. We wanted to maintain the history. Because … it's part of you.' Every room in the 2.5-bath home tells a story. There's a parlor with views of the leafy 55-by-25-foot backyard, which borders Greenacre Park and a library filled with built-ins that recalls a quieter century. Two additional rooms function well as offices or nurseries. It's a residential time capsule — but one grounded in some of the most pivotal movements in American history. The home's original owners, members of the Gracie and Middagh families, were part of Brooklyn's early elite. A manufacturer and devout abolitionist, Pratt reportedly hosted religious leaders and Underground Railroad operatives in the home. McKean notes the uncanny coincidence that her husband, also named Henry Pratt McKean, was born in Massachusetts — just like Pratt. 'That always felt like more than a coincidence,' she said. McKean still visits the house frequently. 'Every time I leave the house, I cry,' she said. 'It really makes a big difference when you work on your home. It feels more like yourself. When you make all the decisions about the details and how you want things, it becomes part of you.' The home is awaiting a buyer who not only values old Brooklyn charm, but also recognizes the weight of its legacy. 'The city has to make a decision,' Luque said. 'Not only to purchase it, but to preserve it.'
