A FATHER-OF-THREE has revealed how he clawed back £872 in overpaid energy bills in just a matter of minutes.
Chris Matthewman, from Basildon, Essex, bagged the "immensely helpful" credit after diving into his finances.

It comes as household finance experts reveal bill payers are sitting on hundreds of pounds' worth of credit and call on them reclaim it before the end of the month.
Chris, 39, and his partner Tracey were deep in debt two years ago and desperately looking for ways to save money.
He decided to first take a look at his energy bills, and logged onto his online account with E.ON to see he was in credit by £1,100 on his dual-fuel tariff that he paid for by direct debit.
He phoned the firm's customer service team who told him to take a meter reading. Once submitted, it told him he could get an £872 refund.
He said: "I phoned E.ON and asked if I could take the credit, saying it was my money at the end of the day.
"They were quite respectful when I found out I was in credit and could issue the money.
"They said I should have a pot (of extra money) for winter but I decided to take the refund."
The updated meter reading also led to E.ON adjusting Chris and Tracey's monthly direct debit from around £200 to £130 - a £70 difference.
Chris first contacted E.ON about the refund in January and the money was in his bank account three weeks later.
But while the adjusted monthly direct debit was useful, Chris said it was the £872 lump sum that was the biggest help to the Essex family as it helped them write off their debt earlier than planned.

They were in a Debt Management Plan (DMP) - when you pay off your debts to creditors, usually through a monthly payment to a debt management company - and the energy credit helped them close it early.
"It was immensely helpful," Chris said when asked how useful the refund was.
"At the time we were in a Debt Management Plan and it was meant to end in September 2024.
"But with the £872 plus with cutting costs in other areas, we finished it in April 2024.
"So we saved five months of payments which in turn was about £5,000 of payments.
"Having the little impact (of the refund) saved us more in the long run."
He added: "I do a meter reading every couple of months now just to see if we are paying too much or if we're not paying too much.
"I would always recommend to do it just so you can have a bit of breathing space."
Households sitting on £100s in energy credit
It comes as Nous.co warns households they could be owed hundreds of pounds in energy credit - and should check their bank balances before the end of May.
Research by the money-saving tool found almost half of households with traditional energy meters it recently surveyed aren't submitting regular readings.
Fail to submit regular meter readings and your energy company charges you an estimated bill based on what you paid the previous year - which can see you forking out more than you should be.
Nous says after a milder winter than expected, households will likely have built up much more credit than they need this spring - and should look at requesting a refund.
Nous experts suggest if your total credit balance this May is more than two thirds of what you usually pay each month, you are likely paying more than you need to and should ask for a refund and for your direct debit to be reduced.
As an example, if you have £400 credit in your account and you usually pay £100 a month, you should be fine to request one.
Meanwhile, consumer website moneysavingexpert.com says as long as you have over one months' worth of direct debit credit in May, you're safe to request a refund.
Greg Marsh, household finance expert and chief executive officer of Nous.co, said: 'No one should have a big credit balance built up in their energy account right now.
'Most suppliers won't automatically refund you if you've paid too much, and could be unfairly holding on to money that you're owed.
'If you've got a traditional meter and haven't submitted a reading in a while, you'll be paying bills based on estimates that could be significantly out after an unusually mild winter.
'Energy companies know how hard it is to stay on top of this stuff, and hope that we just put up with paying more than we need to."
How to request an energy refund
If you're in enough credit, requesting a refund is as simple as getting in touch with your supplier and asking for one.
You'll also find contact details for your supplier on a recent energy bill or can log into your online account if you don't get paper bills.
If you haven't submitted a recent meter reading, your supplier may ask you for one so it knows if what it is charging you is accurate.
If you aren't happy with its response, you can make a complaint via a dedicated page on its website.
If you want to write to them or send them an email, you can use the Citizens Advice complaints letter template.
How to submit a meter reading
Consumer reporter Sam Walker reveals how to submit an energy meter reading.
If you do have to submit a meter reading, which you don't have to do if you have a smart or prepayment meter, the easiest way is to take a photo of your gas and electricity meters.
Most suppliers will let you send in your meter reading online via your energy account.
Some providers will also let you send in the numbers by text or through their app.
Electricity meters
If you have a digital electricity meter then you will see a row of six numbers.
Five of them will be in black and one will be in red.
Write down the five numbers in black, which are shown from left to right.
If you are on an Economy 7 or 10 tariff, which gives you cheaper electricity at night, then you will have two rows of numbers.
You need both to take a reading.
If you have a traditional dial meter then you need to read the first five dials from left to right.
Ignore any red dials.
If the pointer is between two numbers then write down the lowest figure.
If it is between nine and zero then write down the number nine.
Gas meters
If you have a digital metric gas meter showing five numbers followed by a decimal point then you need to write down the first five numbers.
If you have a digital imperial meter then you will see two red numbers and four black numbers.
Write down the four black numbers only.
If you have a digital gas meter, follow the same steps as the digital electricity meter.

Tens of thousands of British households that had prepayment meters force-fitted in their properties are to share more than £18.6m in compensation and debt write-offs on their energy bills. The energy regulator for Great Britain, Ofgem, found that energy companies forced prepayment meters on more than 150,000 homes that were not keeping up with their bills, in one of its most comprehensive compliance reviews. The investigation found that ScottishPower, EDF, Octopus, Utility Warehouse, Good Energy, TruEnergy and Ecotricity had fallen short of the regulator's standards when using this tactic to reclaim unpaid energy debts. The eight energy companies have committed to paying compensation and writing off energy debts for at least 40,000 consumers. However, the compensation payments do not include the customers of British Gas, Utilita or Ovo Energy, which face separate investigations by the energy regulator. Households affected by the scandal, which was first uncovered by the Times, can expect to receive payments starting at £40, rising to £250 or £500, depending on the way they were treated by their energy supplier. Payments of up to £1,000 could be paid to customers who had faced 'inappropriate installation', Ofgem said. Energy companies were found to have forced prepay meters into the homes of customers who were known to be vulnerable, including those with mental illnesses and young children, as the energy cost crisis in 2022 caused many to miss payments on their energy bills. The energy regulator was heavily criticised for failing to halt the forced meter installations, despite repeated warnings from campaign groups and MPs, until after the Times reported in early 2023 that debt agents working for British Gas had ignored signs of vulnerability to fit the meters. Ofgem allowed suppliers to restart forced meter installations less than one year later, although forced fittings in homes with young children and those over the age of 75 remain banned. Ed Miliband, the energy secretary, said: 'Justice is finally being delivered to many of the families, lots of them vulnerable, who were affected by the scandal of energy suppliers wrongly forcibly installing prepayment meters. 'Consumers must come first, which is why we are reforming the energy market to stamp out bad practice and make it easier to access proper redress when things go wrong, through our comprehensive review of Ofgem.' Schools should teach children how to manage their finances on top of the mitochondria being the powerhouse of the cell, parents say. A report released today says that four out of 10 18 to 24-year-olds do not feel confident about money. But half said embarrassment stops them from chatting with their friends and family for advice. Instead, one in five turn to artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots for help, while six in 10 look to social media users on Instagram and TikTok. The solution, more than half of parents told MoneySuperMarket and suicide prevention charity Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM), is to teach money management in schools and universities. The Money Talks report showed that 92% of young adults agreed, saying financial schooling would have helped them feel less trapped and clueless. Chris Almos, 22, is among those turning to AI for help managing their cash. He said: 'I never discussed money with my parents or other members of my family. It just wasn't something that we talked about. 'I've had to learn how to manage my money the hard way. I'm much better with money now, but working out how to manage it on my own has definitely been a challenge.' Chris added: 'I don't think anywhere near as many young people would be relying on AI and social media if there wasn't a stigma around talking about money.' MoneySuperMarket, a money-saving platform, and CALM surveyed 2,045 Britons in February. As the cost of living crisis continues, 87% of the young people polled said they worry about not having enough money. The pressure to be financially successful is something 84% are concerned about. Four in 10 worry about how many zeros are in their bank accounts every day – two in 10 multiple times a day. And they have their reasons. Six in 10 are struggling to afford essentials – such as groceries, travel and rent – and one in two are afraid to even look at their bank balance. To get by, one in two has used Buy Now, Pay Later in the past year. One in four has taken out a loan. One young person, not named in the report, said they are in debt as their job doesn't pay enough. They added: 'It makes me feel very depressed, and it does keep me up at night a lot because I worry about how I'm going to pay it off. 'I just think all the time about how much better my life could have been if I didn't have that.' Financial education isn't compulsory in UK schools, though it is touched on in maths and Personal, Social, Health, and Economic (PSHE) education. For youngsters to be financially literate, they need 30 hours of teaching, a study in 2023 found. But this is something that not all teachers have the time or resources to do. The few students who did receive a financial education were only taught for 48 minutes a month on average. Teaching young people what credit scores are and how overdrafts work would help them feel more confident, the Money Talks report said. Samsung's newest tablet has had a surprise price drop but is it worth it? Tech expert Chris Hall has shared his thoughts on the device For shoppers on the lookout for a reliable, but not extortionate tablet, Samsung could be a brand to consider. As it launches its newest Galaxy S10 FE, a budget take on a high-end device, with decent streaming and gaming features but without a hefty price. The tablet only launched at the beginning of April, but it's already been cut in price. Having already launched as a cheaper alternative, it's been slashed by £100, no matter the model picked. The 10.9-inch display is now £499 cut from its launch price of £599. And the bigger 13.1-inch display is £649, but that's not the only offer. Shoppers are currently best picking the bigger storage option of each models as the 256GB option is cut to the same sale price as the smaller 128GB size. As regular Samsung deal shoppers will be aware of, this deal also includes the chance to ditch an older device and cut the price even further. On top of the already £100 off sale price and free storage. This is part of its 'trade-in' deal, where an extra £150 can be cut off for anyone with an old tablet, or £100 for those who hand in an older phone. Potentially cutting the price of the 256GB 10.9-inch model from £599 to £349 (with all the deals bundled into one). The 'FE' part of the model stands for fan edition, and essentially is Samsung's way of offering a cheaper price for shoppers but cutting on some higher-end features. Like the Exynos processor, but despite its lighter capabilities, it's still considered boosted enough for streaming and even gaming. However, for a better quality screen, the older Samsung Tab S9 could be a better fit, which is available to buy at Samsung or at Amazon. Alternatively, shoppers with a bigger budget could opt for Apple's newest 2025 iPad, which can be split in price with a contract from Sky Mobile. As tech writer Chris Hall shared for The Mirror, the much cheaper Tab S10 FE is worth considering. Thanks to its quality. He said: "I've been testing the Galaxy Tab S10 FE and I've found it to be a really premium experience, great for watching movies. "But the LCD display isn't as good as the OLED display you get on the Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra. There's a single camera on the back instead of the dual camera that Samsung's top tablets get." According to Chris, the scrimp on camera isn't necessarily a bad thing and would depend what shoppers want to use the tablet for. As he said the single camera 'doesn't bother him' because he uses his iPhone for photos instead. "Although it does have slightly lower power, using the Exynos 1580 processor, rather than the flagship-grade processor in the Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra. It has an IP68 rating, so if you knock over your drink and flood your tablet, then it will be just fine."
